Cheapest performance car for under $5K - Saab 9000 track proven
Why a Saab 9000? I started this project when a 19 years old mate of mine asked what beater to buy for under AUD$5K so that he can practice track driving later. Since $5K is the total budget, there are only limited choices available to a provisional licence driver in Australia. Since not many people understand about Saab 9000 Aero therefore I decided to make a demo. Saab had well over engineered this car at the time with its engine capable to handle 500hp without touching internal parts. Standard goodies include large Intercooler, BOV & oil cooler. Here is the spec & cost summary: Saab 9000 Aero, 225hp turbo FWD, 5speed $3000 Bridgestone used RE002 tyres on stock 16" wheels $300 Koni adjustable shocks and unknown springs used $450 Stage 1 ECU $150 High flow cat installed $450 Yellowstuff brakepads $200 Oil change, hoses and labour $450 Total $5,000 Driven 45+ fun laps and the Saab 9000 is still fine, no mechanical issue whatsoever. No LSD or seat support is a pain though, gave my arms and abs a good workout. This car is quirky and need to source parts from UK, at least it shows you can still have fun with a relatively low budget. Saab 9000 Aero 3" exhaust note
Finished the full 3" turbo-back Exhaust. Custom-fabbed by myself and some friends. Magnaflow muffler, high-flow race cat., V-band clamps or welded. No U-clamps. I think it sounds great. Just put in a new clutch upgrade at the same time, so I have to take it easy on the go-fast pedal for a couple hundred miles.

Saab 9000 Turbo - Documentary
The Saab 9000 is a large executive car that was produced by the Swedish company Saab from 1984 to 1997. Representing the company's foray into the executive car scene, the 9000 remained in production until it was replaced by the Saab 9-5 in late 1997. Saab designed the 9000 as part of the Type Four platform in conjunction with the Italian automaker Fiat Automobiles. Fiat retailed similar derivative versions as the more basic Fiat Croma, the luxury-themed Lancia Thema, and the sports-oriented Alfa Romeo 164. Unlike the 164, which shares only the chassis, the Croma and Thema are outwardly similar to the 9000. As such, much of the bodywork appeared interchangeable between the 9000, Croma and Thema; for example, the doors. However, because Saab fitted heavier side impact protection they will not fit.[citation needed] Only seven different parts are actually interchangeable.[2] The 9000's body was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and Saab designer Björn Envall. Despite being shorter overall than the 900, the 9000 had a longer wheelbase and greater interior space, and was the first Saab vehicle imported to the United States to be classed as a "large car" by the EPA.

Extreme turbo Saab + 300 kmh Many viewers have misunderstood this video, so I explain it a little: -Speed at finish line (1mile/1609m) is measured. Time is not measured. -First Saab does 1st and 2nd gear with ~half throttle. Second Saab has limited Boost for 1st and 2nd gear. - three extra seconds between 0-100kmh typically means ~30meters wasted. But three extra seconds used in speeds close to 300kmh, means almost 300meters wasted. Here is equally powerful RWD cars (if not even more HP's) These RWD's are a lot faster between 0-150kmh, but these Saabs are faster from 150kmh-300kmh. You get the point when you compare speeds at finish line. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urWWdomnncw -A Saab 9-5 driver pushes a little too much throttle @3rd gear and looses traction. He lifts a throttle and pushes it back, but too much again and then he gears up 4th, a bit earlier than planned. (optimal is@205kmh). Earlier that summer I broke one gearbox when pushing too hard on 3rd gear. With new gearbox and at later event, I drove very gently on first three gears to avoid breaking it again. I pushed WOT for the first time on 4th gear @ 190kmh. You can hear it clearly on following video. Engine tone changes totally around 200kmh. Incar video is from 299kmh pull (at 1 mile race) Something happened to camera during the run. So I didn't get any incar video from a 305kmh pull.
