Honda Mean Mower vs BTCC Honda Civic

Subscribe to our YouTube channel here: http://bit.ly/11Ad1j1 Subscribe to the mag http://subscribe.autoexpress.co.uk/yt Reigning Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Champion Gordon Shedden will be aiming to keep off the grass when he heads to Silverstone for the final round of this year's series on 13 October. But he took time out from his preparations to have a bit of fun, lining up on the grid with three-time champ and team-mate Matt Neal on a special mower created by their Team Dynamics squad. The Mean Mower is a bit different to Gordon and Matt's Honda Yuasa Racing Civics. It's based on a Honda HF2620 lawn tractor, but the regular 20bhp 614cc V-twin engine has made way for a 1,000cc V-Twin from a Honda Firestorm motorbike. This delivers 110bhp, and gives a power-to-weight ratio of 520bhp per tonne -- enabling the mower to do 0-60mph in under four seconds and hit 130mph. To cope with this huge pace, the regular mower chassis has been replaced with a chromoly spaceframe. Suspension and wheels from an ATV help Boost the handling, plus there's a body-hugging racing seat and Alcantara steering wheel with buttons for the sequential gearbox. This drives the rear wheels via a chain to a rear axle sourced from a go-kart. Yet this amazing machine can still cut grass. The steel cutting bed is replaced by a lighter fibreglass version, and isn't connected to the petrol engine. Instead, two electric motors spin a 3mm wire cable at 4,000rpm -- proper blades could be a bit dangerous at 100mph. The Mean Mower is similar in concept to a Yuasa Racing Civic, which is taken off the production line in Swindon, Wilts, and heavily modified. While the chassis and body are retained, the interior is stripped out and a roll cage fitted. New front and rear sub-frames are installed, as are racing-spec suspension and brakes. And while the 2.0-litre engine uses the same block as the old Civic Type R, a turbocharger is added and most of the internals are changed. Total output is around 330bhp, which allows the Yuasa Civic to do up to 160mph. But how would the BTCC racer compare with the Mean Mower on a lap of Rockingham's National Circuit in Northants? The track is 1.7 miles long, has a range of corners and plenty of grass that could do with a trim... "The only way the mower could win round here is to literally cut corners," said Matt. "But if it doesn't, it has no chance. In fact, I reckon I could give it a 40-second head start and still cross the finish line first." Was Neal right to be so confident? The way the mower stumbled off the starting line suggested so. Its tall first gear makes for lazy getaways -- be too aggressive and the engine will stall. But once moving, the Mean Mower soon gets into its stride. In a straight line, it's quite impressive -- but the narrow track makes it tricky through corners. Still, after 40 seconds, the mower had completed over a third of a lap -- leaving the car with plenty of catching up to do. In fact, the Civic didn't have the mower in its sights until it rounded the penultimate corner. This was going to be close. As the BTCC racer entered the final hairpin, the Mean Mower was exiting it and heading down the home straight -- just a few hundred metres from victory. But the distance to the finish line proved just enough for the Civic to close the gap. In the end it pipped the mower at the post, by the narrowest of margins. We checked the stopwatch: the BTCC car had taken one minute 18.2 seconds to do a standing-start lap. The mower completed it in one minute 59 seconds -- a difference of 40.8 seconds. We know who won the moral victory, though, as the Civic can't trim your grass! Little wonder that these Honda stars are keen to be handed the Mean Mower to cut some blades of glory in their gardens during the close season.

But is it the best hot hatch in the VW Group stable? To find out, we brought along the new SEAT Leon Cupra 280, which has just taken the fastest ever lap time around the Nurburgring for a front-wheel drive car, for an Auto Express track battle. The most powerful production Golf ever made, the new Golf R costs £31,970 if you choose the DSG gearbox and five-door body. It gets 296bhp and 380Nm of torque from its 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, and has four-wheel drive to put all the power on the road. Lighter and cheaper than the Golf, the SEAT Leon Cupra is only front-wheel drive, but it has similar underpinnings and the same engine. It develops 276bhp and 350Nm of torque. Like the Golf, this car is fitted with the DSG dual-clutch gearbox. Stable and powerful, the Golf R performed well around our circuit, recording a lap time of 1.14.8 seconds. However, the sharper and more agile SEAT recorded a lap time of 1.13.9 seconds. So which car comes out on top in our hot hatch head-to-head? Well, it's a bit expensive, but we really like the Golf R. It's a great road car - it's fast, upmarket and composed. But on the track the SEAT Leon Cupra may only be front-wheel drive, but it has almost as much traction, it's much more agile and it's faster against the stopwatch. Crucially it's nearly £4,000 cheaper, so in this head-to-head track battle it's the SEAT Leon Cupra that takes victory.

The new Porsche Cayman and Boxster GTS cost around £6,000 more than the S models, and come with unique front bumpers, plus a 15bhp upgrade to their 3.4-litre engines. This now provides the Boxster with 330bhp, and the Cayman with 340bhp. The GTS models also feature the Porsche sports Exhaust as standard - a £1,530 option on the S - which gives the flat-six engine a more aggressive note. Both models also get Alcantara and leather trim on the dash, which on the S model comes at a premium of £1,740. However, Porsche also gives both models a lot of unnecessary features, such as smoked rear-light clusters, directional headlamp beams and 20-inch alloy wheels - which you'll eventually end up clattering on a kerb. Both the Porsche Cayman and Boxster GTS come with the Sport Chrono Package which includes launch control and active engine mounts. While nice in terms of technology and to pretend you're one of the Porsche's race drivers, it's difficult to justify and discern these additional features when out on the open road. To conclude, you'd only need to spend £4,000 to get all of the right options on your Porsche Boxster or Cayman S. Effectively, you're paying an extra £2,000 for some new bumpers, the history attached to the GTS badge and an extra 15bhp, which you can't really feel out on the open road. It would be better to spend £2,000 on Porsche's excellent PDK paddleshift gearbox, so the premium for the GTS isn't really worth it.

Fortunately, Aston Martin has stayed true to its heritage and still makes 12-cylinder cars. The fastest one is the Aston Martin V12 Vantage S, which is now fitted with a new Sportshift gearbox and adaptive damping for the first time. The engine's been tuned as well- and it's the fastest production car Aston has ever made. But how does it fare against arguably the most focused track-based sports car money can buy: the Porsche 911 GT3? To find out we took the new 991 GT3 to take on the Aston Martin in an Auto Express video track battle. Now into its 3rd generation ever since its launch in 1999, the GT3 has been the benchmark for handling precision. The new 991 generation has 469bhp and 440Nm or torque from its 3.8-litre flat-six engine. For the first time it comes equipped with a PDK dual-clutch gearbox. The Aston Martin V12 Vantage S squeezes Aston's biggest engine into their smallest and most focused sports car. With 565bhp and 620 Nm of torque, the V12 produces more power than the Porsche, but the Aston weighs 235kg more than the lightweight 911 - and for the first time, the V12 comes equipped with Aston's Sportshift automated manual gearbox. With soaking wet tarmac and near-freezing temperatures the cars faced the toughest of challenges - but which one came out on top? Well, the new 911 GT3 exceeded our expectations. The engine is astonishing, the chassis is equally capable and the PDK gearbox has been improved and it's perfectly suited to this type of car. The Aston is great too - the V12 engine is packed with character and it has a playful chassis. There's also no doubting how stunning it looks, but against the stopwatch in wet conditions, the Porsche was 1.5 seconds a lap quicker - and in our dry practice laps it was a full 4 seconds faster than the Aston Martin. There really isn't any loser here. We're glad that both of these sports cars exist and it's been a privilege to drive them.

On this episode of Head 2 Head, Jonny Lieberman pits an American icon against itself. Since 1984 AM General's Humvee has served as the U.S. Military's primary multipurpose workhorse. However, after adding nearly three tons of armor plating, the already slow, ill handling beast gets slower and clumsier. One solution is to replace it with a new truck, but that would cost us a fortune. The other comes from Banks Engineering, which adds more sophisticated turbocharging as well as a revised, active suspension. If the Humvee is going to go down in history as the truck version of the B-52, it needs upgrades similar to what Banks is selling. That said, the Banks Humvee does cost a good deal more than the base Humvee. However, it's a much cheaper alternative to something like an MRAP or the Oshkosh L-ATV.
