Honda Mean Mower vs BTCC Honda Civic

Subscribe to our YouTube channel here: http://bit.ly/11Ad1j1 Subscribe to the mag http://subscribe.autoexpress.co.uk/yt Reigning Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Champion Gordon Shedden will be aiming to keep off the grass when he heads to Silverstone for the final round of this year's series on 13 October. But he took time out from his preparations to have a bit of fun, lining up on the grid with three-time champ and team-mate Matt Neal on a special mower created by their Team Dynamics squad. The Mean Mower is a bit different to Gordon and Matt's Honda Yuasa Racing Civics. It's based on a Honda HF2620 lawn tractor, but the regular 20bhp 614cc V-twin engine has made way for a 1,000cc V-Twin from a Honda Firestorm motorbike. This delivers 110bhp, and gives a power-to-weight ratio of 520bhp per tonne -- enabling the mower to do 0-60mph in under four seconds and hit 130mph. To cope with this huge pace, the regular mower chassis has been replaced with a chromoly spaceframe. Suspension and wheels from an ATV help Boost the handling, plus there's a body-hugging racing seat and Alcantara steering wheel with buttons for the sequential gearbox. This drives the rear wheels via a chain to a rear axle sourced from a go-kart. Yet this amazing machine can still cut grass. The steel cutting bed is replaced by a lighter fibreglass version, and isn't connected to the petrol engine. Instead, two electric motors spin a 3mm wire cable at 4,000rpm -- proper blades could be a bit dangerous at 100mph. The Mean Mower is similar in concept to a Yuasa Racing Civic, which is taken off the production line in Swindon, Wilts, and heavily modified. While the chassis and body are retained, the interior is stripped out and a roll cage fitted. New front and rear sub-frames are installed, as are racing-spec suspension and brakes. And while the 2.0-litre engine uses the same block as the old Civic Type R, a turbocharger is added and most of the internals are changed. Total output is around 330bhp, which allows the Yuasa Civic to do up to 160mph. But how would the BTCC racer compare with the Mean Mower on a lap of Rockingham's National Circuit in Northants? The track is 1.7 miles long, has a range of corners and plenty of grass that could do with a trim... "The only way the mower could win round here is to literally cut corners," said Matt. "But if it doesn't, it has no chance. In fact, I reckon I could give it a 40-second head start and still cross the finish line first." Was Neal right to be so confident? The way the mower stumbled off the starting line suggested so. Its tall first gear makes for lazy getaways -- be too aggressive and the engine will stall. But once moving, the Mean Mower soon gets into its stride. In a straight line, it's quite impressive -- but the narrow track makes it tricky through corners. Still, after 40 seconds, the mower had completed over a third of a lap -- leaving the car with plenty of catching up to do. In fact, the Civic didn't have the mower in its sights until it rounded the penultimate corner. This was going to be close. As the BTCC racer entered the final hairpin, the Mean Mower was exiting it and heading down the home straight -- just a few hundred metres from victory. But the distance to the finish line proved just enough for the Civic to close the gap. In the end it pipped the mower at the post, by the narrowest of margins. We checked the stopwatch: the BTCC car had taken one minute 18.2 seconds to do a standing-start lap. The mower completed it in one minute 59 seconds -- a difference of 40.8 seconds. We know who won the moral victory, though, as the Civic can't trim your grass! Little wonder that these Honda stars are keen to be handed the Mean Mower to cut some blades of glory in their gardens during the close season.

The 1199 Panigale R has a 1.2-litre V-Twin with 195bhp. There is an even hotter Superlegera version but it’s sold out, so this R is the most powerful Ducati you can buy. The Audi RS6 has a 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 with 560hp – that’s 10 horses more than an R8 V10 Plus, which is why we have chosen the estate for this track battle. Auto Express’s Owen Mildenhall will be in the RS6 while Alastair Fagan from Fast Bikes magazine will be on the Panigale. With 1032bhp per tonne the Ducati did 0-60mph in 3.2 seconds and the standing quarter in 10.5 seconds compared to 4.3 and 12.4 seconds for the 289bhp per tonne Audi. The bike clearly ruled in a straight line- but let’s see what happens when we add some corners... For a two-tonne car it's pretty impressive. It's got loads of grip, and the fact that the fan was still going a long time after we finished the race is an indication of how tightly packaged everything is under this bonnet, with a big V8 in there. There's loads of grip and massive straight-line performance. It's not the most thrilling car to drive on track because you can't really do much with it, it's not very adjustable. It just grips and that's it. You can't disable the stability control either, but there's no doubting it's really fast. The bike feels fast no matter what you do and no matter how fast you ride it, you always think you'll come back to a lap record - but as proven in the past it's not always correct. On this occasion, the bike beat the car - but in the car's defence, there's one thing you can do with it that you can't do with the bike: take the whole crew out for a hot lap!

It's a technology-filled car, and Nissan has engaged in a top trumps-style battle with Porsche, getting faster Nurburgring times and even faster 0-60 performance. So which one's better away from the restrictions of the road, and which one's going to be faster against the stopwatch? Let's find out in an Auto Express track battle in the video review above. The most powerful 911 in the range, the turbo S provides an extra 39bhp, taking the output of the 3.8-litre straight-six up to 552bhp and delivering a whopping 700Nm of torque. At just under £80,000, the Nissan GT-R is a pound-per-performance bargain compared to the Porsche. Nissan's Technology Pack showcases a 3.8-litre twin-turbo engine which pumps out 542bhp and 632Nm of torque.

After four years of technical workshops and concepts, BMW confirmed it would build that car and five years later, it arrived in the form of the i8. The design of the BMW i8 is absolutely incredible and it's a surprise to see how much of the concept's design that the BMW has managed to keep. There's a really nice cut-out in the bonnet which comes in a contrasting colour to the body and at the back, there are a pair of elegant flying C-Pillars. The most striking feature of the BMW i8 however, is its upward opening scissor doors. The BMW i8 is powered by three power-sources. A 129bhp engine driving the front wheels, a 227bhp three-cylinder driving the rears, and another small Boosting electric motor, which works as a generator. The BMW i8 also has a huge battery pack, which allows for 22 miles of range. Surprisingly though, the BMW i8 still weighs 70kg less than an Audi R8, which comes as a result of its high-tech carbon fibre body and aluminium chassis. It can also hit 0-62mph in 4.4-seconds. Driving on the electric motor, the BMW i8 feels Volkswagen Golf GTI fast, but if you put your foot down while going up a hill, the three-cylinder kicks in. It sounds really good - pretty similar to the throaty six-cylinder in the Porsche 911. To make the BMW i8 come fully alive, though, you need to put it in 'Sport' mode. This keeps the turbocharged three-cylinder engine running, as well as the electric motors. It basically gives you everything that this car has got. The engine sounds even better, and because you've got the electric motor giving you that instant shove, it feels fast. As soon as it starts to get a bit inefficient, the engine kicks in. You might expect a surging, stepped acceleration from the BMW i8, but it's really smooth. These figures are better than a Toyota Prius, a Yaris Hybrid and almost any other eco car you can think of. The BMW i8 is really nice to drive, and what you notice more than anything else, is that it feels really light on its feet. All that carbon fibre really seems to have done the trick. If you're expecting the BMW i8 to be an M Car, then don't. It's not a big oversteering brute, it's much more clinical than that and gets a character all of its own. The steering on the BMW i8 is really nice and light, plus you get a really crisp turn-in. When the back tyres are starting to lose traction, the fronts will come in and drag you out thanks to its four-wheel drive system. It's really forgiving, but not quite as sharp as a 911 maybe. However, it's different and it's something immensely likeable. The BMW i8 comes with a £100,000 price-tag - similar to a Porsche 911 or an Audi R8 - but what's amazing is how much tech you get for that. Obviously there's the carbon-fibre body, three power-trains and four-wheel drive, but there are even options such as laser headlamps. The BMW i8 makes the Audi R8 and 911 feel a bit old, but the Porsche is still sharper. What's clear though, is that BMW has definitely done enough to keep Audi and all other sports car manufacturers on their toes.

Volkswagen had one thing in mind with the XL1 - to create a useable, everyday vehicle that would use just a single litre of fuel for every hundred kilometres it travelled. Three concept cars and thirteen years of development later, the Volkswagen XL1 has now become a production reality. It boasts a stylish teardrop design, shaped by aerodynamics to create as little drag as possible. It sits just over a metre tall, which is lower than most sports cars, including a Porsche Boxster. When the XL1 finally arrives in the UK, only around 20-30 cars will be on offer, with early estimates of the price tag coming in at around £100,000. Volkswagen claim the car can achieve 313mpg, so to put this to the test, we drove the XL1 around a short loop in full electric mode. Astonishingly, we managed to achieve 403mpg - so it actually beat the figures stated by Volkswagen. Okay, so, when we did drive the XL1 a little faster, that figure did fall to 196mpg. But it's still efficient, and hardly going to break the bank. Overall, we were pretty impressed with the XL1 - the build quality of the interior was stunning, and it was hard not to be seduced by the cutting-edge technology on board. Don't worry, though; it's going to be a while before the next Volkswagen Golf looks like an XL1.

They were built to specifically fit in the trunk of that car, which is pretty cool in my opinion.  Only however many cars that were sold in that time span that had those scooters added, are how many of those that exist. Its a super rare little scooter, so you're lucky to see one."

However, after adding nearly three tons of armor plating, the already slow, ill handling beast gets slower and clumsier. One solution is to replace it with a new truck, but that would cost us a fortune. The other comes from Banks Engineering, which adds more sophisticated turbocharging as well as a revised, active suspension. If the Humvee is going to go down in history as the truck version of the B-52, it needs upgrades similar to what Banks is selling. That said, the Banks Humvee does cost a good deal more than the base Humvee. However, it's a much cheaper alternative to something like an MRAP or the Oshkosh L-ATV.
