Pikes Peak 2011 near miss

Ralph Murdoch's 1970 Camaro drifted out of the normal line and nearly went off the road. His back tire was in the loose stuff when he gunned it spraying me with dust and gravel. The only casualty was a chipped camera lens and mouthful of dirt, but no one was hurt and Murdoch went on to win the vintage class with a time of 12:51.004. What you can't see from the video is that this is in an S-curve and the other cars were hugging the apex on the other side of the road from me. I was joined at this spot throughout the day by other seasoned photographers and even a race official said it was a safe spot to shoot. But like any rally event, anything can happen. He drove his new 910-hp Monster Sport Suzuki SX4 Hill Climb Special on Falken WildPeak A/T tires, the powerful new line of all-terrain, all-season tires Falken launched this past April. Following Exhaustive tests in a Japanese wind tunnel facility, Monster's 2010 Pikes Peak race car underwent extensive aerodynamic changes to better adapt to the modified road surface on the race to the clouds, which assumed a smoother tarmac and less gravel than last year. Thinning air ascending the mountain robs most motors of their power by 30 or more percent, but the increase in horsepower over last year's race car helped push the driver forward.

Gravelrama 2010 #6 Hill Climb
Gravelrama 40 was held August 25-30 this year in Cleves, Ohio outside of Cincinnati. The East Coast 4 Wheel Drive Association event includes rock crawling, bracket sand drag racing, class sand drag racing, uphill drag racing, pea gravel hill climb, obstacle course, and even a parade through town. The hill climb is a fan favorite and didn't disappoint this year with well over two hundred runs.
