SPOON CR-Z
Just as Honda is shifting its sports car line-up from petrol engine to hybrid cars, SPOON SPORTS has been struggling to find a way to tune hybrid cars. SPOON CR-Z is their first tuned hybrid car. Through development, they had found lots of blackboxes in the components related to electric motors, making hybrid car tuning a more difficult task compared to traditional petrol engine cars. So first they have thought of taking off the electric motor and swap the engine to K20, but the conclusion was to leave the electric motor as it is. It is obvious there will be more hybrid cars coming from Honda in the future, and it was time Spoon needed to face it and find a way to deal with it. Development is still going on, but in one of the latest HotVersion videos, SPOON CR-Z succeeded to beat stock condition Civic TypeR Euro (FN2) driven by Keiichi Tsuchiya. Their tuning method was simple - besides the electric motor, they had done everything they always did with petrol engine cars. Take unnecessary things off from car and make it light, tune intake/Exhaust parts, and equip with ground-hugging suspension system. Honda CR-Z sounds good ! Stock vs light tuned HKS + Spoon parts.
So far i see no impact on my MPG. Throttle reactivity is way faster, the rev jumps faster at high rpm while shifting. Sound in tunnel is Ferrari-V8-like (but quieter). Sound at idle is Harley-like. Both Spoon and HKS items are perfect in every detail. Some power gain is felt from 3000 rpm and up. Spoon Throttle body comes with full electronics mod, the engine is driven differently, econ mode driving is made easier too. Stock was great but, now CR-Z is even more fun to drive; sounds even more "Honda". Still not an EK9, but a nice move in the right direction. *the first cut of video while title is made with stock CR-Z, then i recorded 3 identical situations, then i stitched them to hear differences. RPM is limited to 4,9K when car is not moving, this is supposed to be a pointless "launch control". the video is old now, i have modded very much ever since, still no negative impact on mpg. This car today have a Jackson Racing Supercharger kit, and a whole lot other things.
