Repairing The Brake Lights GMC Yukon 1998
Hi there, As you can see,the brake lights are working and this is how I did it: after a mandatory search on the web,I've noticed that lots of people replaced the brake light switch without solving the problem,so I've decided to remove the switch and give it a lookover to see if it really needs replacing. To get there wasn't easy especially if you have big hands...The switch is located above the brake pedal,is a white rectangular plastic box. Here is a link where you can see better in exploded view: http://www.justanswer.com/gm/29606-need-replace-brake-light-switch-1999-gmc -yukon.html To remove the switch you basically have to remove a retainer that holds the switch in place.Prying it out is the way to do it; In the process the retainer will be badly damaged, destroyed, but that's OK 'cause it only costs $1.95. It's a good idea to order the retainer first and only then start the job; GM Part No. 15705042. I've used a flat head screwdriver,a heavy duty one. After i've got the switch out, along with the wire harness,I've noticed that 5 out of the 6 WIRES WERE BROKEN (?!),a damage consistent with vibrations over a prolonged period of time,in my case over 14 years...The wires were stiff and the insulation presented cracks and being saturday night didn't help:no way ordering a new one so I had to improvise. In no time I've found the right replacement wires and I've started soldering. Actually I've made it 6 inch longer to make my life easier when I'll put it back. If you decide to make that 6 inch extension on the wire harness, don't worry about what colour wires you may find, could be any colour. Only make sure that the wires are not too thin, ideal is to be the same kind of wires, and they got to be flexible...Just cut across the 6 wires of the harness and solder the 6 inch wires(6 of them) in between, making sure that each colour matches the coresponding colour, for instance the yellow wire from the male connector matches the yellow wire from the female connector, and so on...Insulate the solder point with electrical tape or heat shrinkable tubing. After I've oppened the switch I've seen that was OK,in fact a very simple and reliable construction. There are three contacts, one normally open and the other two normally closed. The open one is the one for the brake lights, when the pedal is stepped on, the circuit closes and the brake lights comes on. One of the other two is for cruise control and I know that 'cause I have the cruise control WORKING AGAIN ! Heads up for the guys who "lost" the cruise control.I don't know what the other one does...There are some instructions out there advising to remove the switch by pushing out the pin that goes through it and then pulling the switch out. I took it out simply by sliding it toward the gas pedal, leaving the pin in. The harness is connected to the switch through a female connector. At the opposite end, close to the male connector, the wires are secured by a plastic retainer onto the dashboard frame. Pry out the retainer, doesn't matter if it's destroyed, you don't have to use it ever again, now that the wire harness is 6 inch longer it can be tucked in through a different route. I hope that you guys found this helpful. Good Luck !

1996 Suburban, Modifying the Headlights to have low and high beams on at the same time
On 1988 to 1999 Chevrolet and GMC Trucks, the vehicles were designed so when the high beam lights were selected, the low beam bulbs would extinguish. While with proper bulbs, the distant illumination is adequate enough, this leaves a rather dull spot of illumination immediately in front of the vehicle for about 50 to 60 feet. This can be tiring on the eyes. This movie clip consists of a fairly simple modification that can be done, it is mentioned enough on several sites, and there are even kits available to do the project. The problem is, in some places outside of the USA, ordering one in can get to be rather expensive once postage/shipping is factored in. By doing a little scrounging at wrecking yards for a few simple parts, consisting of a 4-pin relay, a circuit breaker or at least a fuse with its holder, a relay pigtail, and some decent gauge wiring, one can make a device for pennies on their own. With this, the low beam lights will stay lit once high beams are selected, giving a nice and even spread of light in front of the truck. It finally warmed up enough around here, a whole 18 degrees F, for me to get outside and at least get the project done, though it needs a little tidying up. With this there is a little hope warmer weather will be around soon enough so old vehicle projects can resume once again. I tried my best in the movie, there is some mumbo-jumbo, so I made a diagram for the end of the movie to try to explain the project better for you, and help you to do the same on your truck if you wish. Remember to please take no shortcuts doing any sort of wiring on any vehicle, always fuse or circuit protect the project, disconnect batteries for certain types of projects, or at the least make you constant power supply the very last connection. Be sure no wire is near high heat or where it may be pinched. I see my one hater hates me already! Show us all how to do it you troll!
