Cody's D1NZ Drifting Championship Series - Round 5 Highlights - Ruakaka, Whangarei 2012
Subscribe For More! http://oversteertv.co.nz Highlights from Round 5 of the Cody's D1NZ National Drifting Championship Series from the exclusive Ruakaka street course in Whangarei, New Zealand. For the first time since 2009 the D1NZ Series returned to the streets of Northland, home to the infamous Team Driftcorp who have 6 D1NZ Championships to their name and a rich history with New Zealand Drifting. As such, the local fans swarmed at the opportunity to meet their favorite drivers including 2006 Drift King Fanga Dan, current 3x defending champion Gaz Whiter, and new young gun Robee Nelson. This was the penultimate round, the Top 5 Championship contenders were all visibly nervous and reluctant to talk about points and the title chase, most if not all had their mind set on winning the weekend and it reflected in some of the closest Top16 battles of the season, the Grand Final at Hampton downs is sure to be a spectacular finale! In practice plenty of carnage had accumulated in pitlane, most notably 2 of the main title contenders, Cole Armstrong suffering 2 gearbox failures and Curt Whittaker, the points leader, blowing an engine just before qualifying with a fist sized hole through the 2JZ power-plant of his newly sponsored Team Dilusi R34 Skyline. Curt would step into a borrowed car (D1Pro-Am Cam Vernon) at an attempt to hold on to as many points as possible ahead of the final round. While championship dramas were the talk of pitlane, Mad Mike had his head down and focused - qualifying first with hometown favorite Fanga Dan in second, with young gun Darren Benjamin in third, further proving himself in the D1-Pro class. The Top16 got underway with Curt Whittaker paired up along side Niko Reid in one of the most entertaining battles of the day, the pair were so closely matched that OMT was called not once, twice, but 3 times until the wildchild in the Luxury Sports S15 progressed through over Whittaker who drove his best in an under-powered Pro-Am car. With gearbox troubles still hampering the V Energy R34, Cole Armstrong and the team would rebuild a new gearbox during the lunchbreak just in time for the Top16, only to spin against Darren Benjamin in the chase, Benjamin progressing through Top8 falling victim to a now hard charging Niko Reid who was right at home with his street driving style despite another OMT. The Top 4 would eventually feature Fanga Dan, Gaz Whiter, Mad Mike and Niko Reid, a collection of popular drivers sure to rub panels for the modest Whangarei crowd who braved the rain throughout the day. A controversial battle between Mad Mike and Gaz Whiter went OMT, while Fanga Dan progressed over Niko Reid for a spot in the final. Gaz fell to Mike during the OMT, regardless of any controversy Mad Mike would continue on into the final which was set to be a classic battle of friendly rivals. The hometown hero, Fanga Dan in the Castrol Edge Commodore was out with nothing to loose and was chasing down the top step of the podium in front of a vocal home crowd. Mad Mike however was a man on a mission, determined to join the ranks as a D1NZ Champion. The MadBull RX7 would scream and spit flames on the lead run opening up a small gap from Fanga Dan who would struggle ever so slightly with the right transmission setup in the big V8. In true D1NZ fashion the battle would go OMT and despite an even more refined chase and lead run from both drivers it was almost a carbon copy with Mike opening the gap just enough to seal the win over Fanga Dan! Gaz Whiter would finish 3rd with Niko Reid claming his best result of his debut D1-Pro season in 4th - Mad Mike celebrated in style with his right foot out the window of the Red Bull RX7 during his victory burnout. A fascinating round in the heart of Northland that is sure to return, a round that now see's Fanga Dan sit 4th on the points, a dark horse for the title - if anyone is out to spoil the party Dan's wild lock to lock driving style could bring change to the Championship chase into Hampton Downs for the Grand Final. Mad Mike however is seriously determined to earn his stripes and the respect that comes with it. With more than 5 drivers in with a shot, anything can happen!! PROTON Satria Neo S2000 driven by 16 yr old Oliver Mellors - Rally Negeri Sembilan 2011
After a dominant run in the 2011 Asia Pacific Rally Championship winning the Manufacturers and Drivers titles, PROTON ran as "double-zero" or safety course car in the last round of the Malaysian Rally Championship in Bahau, Negeri Sembilan. This was a fitting end to the year as the team wanted to give Malaysian fans the opportunity to see the Satria Neo S2000 in action. Behind the wheel is 16yr old "Ollie" Mellors from the UK. Although only the "00", Ollie set many of the fastest stage times of the rally. You can see him getting out of the car at the end of the stage before the transport section, as he is not allowed to drive on Malaysian public roads until he is 17.

Proton Satria Neo S2000 Rally car being tested at French Alps
MEM was originally formed in 1982 as an outlet for its owner, Chris Mellors, to compete in British Champion Rallying but soon developed into a successful preparation company winning events and more than 10 championships all over the world since it was formed in 1983. Highlights include MEM winning the British Championship twice, the FIA Production World Championship with the Proton Wira in 2002, the US Pro-Rally Championship in 2003 for Mitsubishi USA and the 2004 FIA Asia-Pacific Championship, again for Proton. Building on this successful partnership between MEM and Proton in Malaysia, MEM was authorised to transform the road going version of Protons Satria Neo model and produce a ground-breaking conversion of the Satria into the full specification Super 2000 car that you see today. The Car Designed by Mellors Elliott Motorsport, (MEM), the new Proton Satria Neo Super 2000 rally car has just raised the performance bar for the rapidly expanding FIA Super 2000 rally series. The concept was developed by using a combination of innovative engineering designs, the 25 years of experience of the teams technical staff but, crucially, also the input from the teams owner and extremely successful driver, Chris Mellors. The result is an astonishingly small and agile car which from the very outset was designed for the driver. With an attractive and aerodynamic package for the front bumper, wings, rear bumper and rear spoiler complimenting the eye-catching Satria design, the Proton S2000 can achieve in full rally trim the smallest frontal area and the lowest roof height in its class even at rally ride height settings. Driver and Co-driver seat positions are fixed at the rearmost possible mounting points to maximise the cars weight distribution but with the pedal box and steering column both adjustable to suit different pilots. The MEM rollcage design uses 35 metres of lightweight Chrome Moly tube together with strategic body strengthening resulting in vastly improved torsional bodyshell stiffness and a no-compromise safety cell for the crew. The cleverly designed side crash protection bars are uniquely shaped to aid driver and co-driver access into and out of the car. The 2 litre Proton Super 2000 engine is derived from the 1.8 litre engine fitted to Protons Waja model and has been further developed by MEMs engineers to produce a reliable 278 bhp @ 7600rpm with a usable power band from 5,500 to 8,500rpm. Combined with the best 6-speed sequential 4WD Super 2000 transmission currently available, (the 532 version from market leaders Xtrac), the car sets new standards for engine performance and driveability. The fuel system innovates too with a quick-change fuel control cassette, (which includes all the fuel pumps, filters and valves), attached to the MEM-designed FIA FT3 safety fuel cell to aid rapid maintenance. Alcon provides the braking power with their latest Super 2000 alloy 4-pot calipers and ventilated discs which combined with the Neos low overall weight of 1150kg gives astoundingly short braking distances. The ventilated disc sizes are independently maximised for both Gravel, (15 rims), and Tarmac, (18 rims), but for both simplicity and cost the brake calipers are common to both setups thanks to a simple mounting arrangement. MEMs engineers have designed the suspension with a relatively conventional layout of wishbone and MacPherson strut, which means it will be easy and relatively cheap to maintain whilst remaining super-reliable. However, the design has cleverly maximised damper travel to such an extent that the bump stops are the only part that stops the body sills hitting the ground on full bump travel! This translates into achieving both an ultra-low tarmac setup with go-kart levels of body roll and a long-travel gravel setup with enormous ability to soak up the biggest bumps. With various anti-roll bars available for both front and rear and with MEMs 25 years of rally experience, the suspension setup can be easily fine-tuned for any rally surface or type. The latest technology is used in the electrical systems with a state-of-the-art Multiplexed wiring system capable of managing the entire cars electronics from a central unit ideally placed in the centre of the car in-between the driver and co-driver. Apart from the weight saving reduction that this achieves, it is simple to operate and, with automatically resetting circuit breakers, this is technology and reliability at its best. The result of all this is a car which not only has well-proven technical advances and novel design but also has simplicity where appropriate to ensure the best possible combination of performance and reliability.
