Forgotten Volkswagen Single Cab
How does an old Volkswagen Single Cab get buried under 3 feet of dirt?
Took 45 years to bury this Volkswagen and almost 2 days to dig it out.
Have a look. Took the Syncro for a Sunday drive and spotted an old single
cab in the foothills outside Idaho Falls. This is nine hours worth of
digging condensed into a 15 minute video. It had been sitting in a wash
since 1967. It was buried under two feet of dirt but it's extremely rust
free given the circumstances. The drop gates hadn't seen the light of day

Thanks for all the phone calls and emails about Forgotten VW's that we have
received. This video has helped rescue several abandoned and otherwise
forgotten VW's that may have been left for dead including a very cool 1960
VW Double Cab that we got out of Missouri that had been sitting since 1965.

This video illustrates what happends when these two stroke semidiesels run
out due to too much oil in the crankcase. With my left hand, I block the
injection pump, so from that time the engine run on lube oil only, no
diesel at all. I have heard lots of stories about this from decades ago but
this is the first time, to my knowledge, that it is captured on video.
Luckily we had blocked most of the air intake prior to starting and ended
at somewhat over 1000 rpm. Max operating rpm is 425-450. With full air
supply, I would guess this engine would reach thousands of rpm and I could
only guess what would have happened then...
The electric glowplug short circuited so we had to rely on the propane
burner which had slightly low temperature. In this startattempt, we used an
acetylene burner and got the glowplug bright red. The crankcase was,
unfortunately, filled with too much oil so the engine was running on its
lube oil from the crankcase instead of diesel. Still some trouble with the
fuel injection, doesn't feel right when injecting diesel manually.

Blew an o-ring on the turbo and started
to run on motor oil sucked into intake. Finally killed it after shooting a
dry-chem fire extinguisher into the intake.

Taking The 285 Ton Anode The Last Mile
Here we see the 285 ton anode running it's last mile of a trip that started
in Salt Lake City, UT. In the first scene we see the Precision Heavy Haul
team making the turn from Arizona Highway 188 onto the US 60 in Claypool,
AZ. I thought this turn was going to be a troublesome one for them, but
you could tell this wasn't their first rodeo! Arizona DPS officers blocked
off the intersection and within 5 minutes the anode was through and traffic
was flowing again. Scene two shows the load entering the Freeport McMoRan
mine complex in Miami, AZ. An interesting thing to note, is as the load is
climbing the very steep grade at the mine, the driver of the lead truck
lifts the rear most and unpowered axle on his rig for more traction on his
drive axles. The entire set up was reported to be 225 feet long, with the
anode itself weighing 285 tons. This was shot on 8-16-11.

Starting the 1909 Blitzen-Benz, UNEDITED, @ Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance
The Blitzen-Benz was purpose built to do just one thing, to break speed
records (not racing), and it did repeatedly from 1909 through 1911.

Its speed of 228.1km/h (141.73mph) on April 23rd, 1911, driven by Bob
Burman at Daytona Beach, stood as a record until 1919. Twice the speed of
the fastest airplane, (12 April, 1911, Alfred Leblanc @
69.442mph/111.801kph in a Blériot Blériot) and even shattering the record
speed of 210km/h set by a locomotive in 1903.
This record was not even officially broken in an airplane until 1920!
Of the six originally built, this is one of only two that exist today, and
is displayed at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany.
While the extended and nuanced effort required to start the Blitzen-Benz on
a cool coastal morning can try the patience of some viewers, its historical
significance and ground-breaking engineering brilliance still place it
amongst the greatest motor-vehicle achievements of all time, and the dozens
witnessing this effort felt it was one of the highlights of many great
moments at Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance 2011.
