Highlights from Round 4 of the Cody's D1NZ National Drifting Championship
Series from the custom built night circuit at Mt Smart Stadium, Auckland,
Round 4 of the D1NZ is New Zealand's only exclusive Night Drifting event
with the Top16 battles starting just after sunset. The Mt Smart circuit is
tight and technical with surface changes and entry speeds around 120kmph
along a wall of concrete barriers. The amphitheatre-like setup provides
good spectator views and sets the stage for a rare night time battle for
the D1NZ Championship title.
Qualifying was held late afternoon on day 2 of the event, the track had
accumulated plenty of rubber from the practice sessions as well as heat
from the midday sun for fast wall-scraping entries that pleased the crowd
that began to line the fences for the Top32.
Mad Mike Whiddett would take top qualifier at the end of the session, a
back to back achievement for the Red Bull pro athlete after qualifying
first at the same event last year. With the new sealed entry and lessons
learned from last season the Mad Bull RX7 was a deadly contender and top
pick for the final.
The Top32 would feature only 2 battles, Daynom Templeman taking a win from
Mark Burling while Sky Zhao in the Dspec S15 progressed through over Bruce
Tannock in the Achillies S13.
The Top16 got underway just on nightfall and fans would be set for a night
of upsets and championship changing results as it soon became clear some of
New Zealand's top drivers underestimated the talents of the Pro-Class
The first major upset of the night would go to the young Darren Benjamin in
the Matt's Computer Services C35 Laurel, defeating Red Bull giant and
championship leader Mad Mike Whiddett during an intensely fought rerun
which would eventually see Whiddett make a mistake on his chase through
turn 2, Darren celebrating with an impromptu burnout on the front straight.
Driftcorp drivers Fanga Dan in the Castrol Edge Holden Commodore and Gaz
Whiter in the Tectaloy Nissan S14 would suffer an impressive assault from
Bradley Lauder who pushed his way through to the final with his own
preemptive victory skid, both he and Darren Benjamin would take 2nd and 3rd
respectively, putting major dents in many drivers' championship hopes.
Could this year be the year of the rookie?
Championship contender Cole Armstrong in the V Energy Skyline would rub 4
doors with Jason Sellers in the Supercharged Batteries C33 Laurel in one of
the tightest battles of the night. Armstrong would progress through to the
Top4 but battle mechanical dramas in the late stages, struggling to get
onto the podium. A Top4 finish however good enough for championship
consistency heading into the remaining 2 rounds of the series.
The man of the night however was the 'Knight Rider' himself, Curt Whittaker
in the immaculate all-black 2JZ powered R34 Skyline, again performing with
distinction despite having no major funding, and the question has to be
asked, how many more events does this man need to win before he gets the
backing he deserves? The Australasian Drift Champion securing the top step
of the podium under an impressive fireworks display that drew the event to
