At the 2010 Los Angeles Design Challenge, the designers from the
Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design Studios in Carlsbad, California, surprised
everyone with a revolutionary vision. Taking their inspiration from nature,
they designed a vehicle which is fully integrated into the ecosystem, from
the moment of its creation right through to the end of its service life.
The Mercedes-Benz BIOME Concept grows in a completely organic environment
from seeds sown in a nursery. Out on the road the car emits pure oxygen,
and at the end of its lifespan it can be simply composted or used as

competition had called for the creation of a vision of a safe and
comfortable 2+2 compact car featuring good handling and a first-class
design, and weighing only 1,000 lbs (around 454 kg/kerb weight).
Mercedes-Benz symbiosis - a partnership with nature
The Mercedes-Benz BIOME Concept symbiosis vehicle is made from an
ultralight material called BioFibre and tips the scales at just 875.5 lbs
(around 394 kg). This material is significantly lighter than metal or
plastic, yet more robust than steel. BioFibre is grown from proprietary DNA
in the Mercedes-Benz nursery, where it collects energy from the sun and
stores it in a liquid chemical bond called BioNectar4534. As part of this
process, the vehicle is created from two seeds: The interior of the BIOME
grows from the DNA in the Mercedes star on the front of the vehicle, while
the exterior grows from the star on the rear. To accommodate specific
customer requirements, the Mercedes star is genetically engineered in each
case, and the vehicle "grows" when the genetic code is combined with the
seed capsule. The wheels are grown from four separate seeds.
The Mercedes-Benz BIOME Concept is powered by BioNectar4534, which is
stored in the BioFibre material of the chassis, interior, and wheels. In
addition, Mercedes-Benz has developed a technology to equip trees with
special receptors which can collect the excess solar energy and turn it
into BioNectar4534. This creates a direct link with nature's energy sources
and acts as an incentive to cover mobility energy requirements through more
trees and at the same time maintain natural resources. Like plants, the
Mercedes-Benz symbiosis vehicle also produces oxygen, thereby contributing
to improving air quality. At the end of its service life, the Mercedes-Benz
BIOME can be fully composted or used as building material. Thanks to the
exclusive use of green technologies, the BIOME vehicle thus blends
seamlessly into the ecosystem.

I was thoroughly underwhelmed by BMW's latest concept on show at the
Auckland Museum today.
It has similar hybrid technology but a lower all-electric range than a
Chevrolet Volt, yet it costs $270,000 USD more.
Or think of it as an all-electric Tesla Roadster, but with less range, less
power, less acceleration, less style, less reliability - but with higher
emissions, and at twice the price.

BMW i. The first two production models will be the battery electric BMW i3,

BMW Vision Efficient Dynamics concept unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor
Show and has an all-electric range of 35 kilometres (22 mi). Production of
both BMW i8 plug-in electric cars is scheduled to start in Leipzig in 2013.
Concept versions of the i3 and BMW i8 were presented at the 2011 Frankfurt
Motor Show. In August 2011 BMW announced the BMW i5, a new midrange
model for its new electric car line. The i5 will use the same drivetrain as
the BMW i8 and is scheduled for 2016. The first BMW i store opened in
June 2012 at BMW's London Park Lane showroom. The carmaker premiered an
updated version of the BMW i3 concept electric car and unveiled its i

The BMW i8, first introduced as the BMW Concept Vision Efficient Dynamics,
is a plug-in hybrid under development by BMW. The initial concept BMW i8
was unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, and the BMW i8 concept
car destined for production was unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor
Show. The BMW i8 has a 7.2 kWh lithium-ion battery pack which delivers
an all-electric range of 35 km (22 mi).
In 2010 BMW announced the mass production of the Concept Vision Efficient
Dynamics in Leipzig beginning in 2013 as the BMW i8. The BMW i8 is part
of BMW's "Project i" and will be marketed as a new brand, BMW i, sold
separately from BMW or Mini. The BMW i3 and the BMW i8 will be the first
models available from 2013. Other i models will follow.
The BMW i8 concept plug-in hybrid electric vehicle unveiled at the 2011
Frankfurt Motor Show has a 7.2 kWh (26 MJ) lithium-ion battery pack that
allows an all-electric range of 35 km (22 mi). Its top speed is
electronically limited to 250 km/h (160 mph) and is expected to go from 0
to 100 km/h (0 to 60 mph) in 4.6 seconds. Under normal driving conditions
the BMW i8 is expected to deliver 80 mpg-US (2.9 L/100 km; 96 mpg-imp)
under the European cycle. A full charge of the battery will take less than
2 hours using 220V.
The BMW i8 combines the electric drive system of the BMW i3, with a 96 kW
(129 hp) electric motor located in the front axle powering the front wheels
and at the rear is a turbocharged
1.5-liter 3-cylinder gasoline engine producing 164 kW (220 hp) and 300 N·m
(220 lbf·ft) of torque. The result BMW i8 is a combined output of 260 kW
(349 hp). All four wheels provide regenerative braking. The location of the
BMW i8 battery pack in the energy tunnel gives the BMW i8 a low centre of
gravity, enhancing its dynamics. Together with the positioning of the motor
and engine over the axles, the result is an optimum 50/50 weight
distribution for the BMW i8.

The Audi A9 is a futuristic proposal for a luxury sport sedan which, in
Audi's car fleet, will be positioned higher than the Audi A8 flagship and
will be aimed at the luxury sedan segment which includes models such as
Porsche Panamera and the Lamborghini Estoque Concept. The designer, Daniel
Garcia, found his inspiration in the architectural designs of Santiago
Calatrava's buildings in "La Ciudad de las Artes y Ciencias" meaning The
City Of Arts And Sciences which can be found in Valencia, the designers
hometown. This strong influence can be seen in the clean flowing lines of
the vehicle and futuristic styling features. Calatrava's buildings look
like they come from 100 years in the future.
The A9 concept has amazing features and yet to be discovered revolutionary
materials. The windscreen and roof are integrated into a single piece,
created using an advanced nano-technology material, which features a
self-repairing system and allows for adjustments in color and opacity. The
bodywork adapts an electronic painting system which allows the owner to
change the color at the touch of a button. Another interesting feature of
this structure is that is deformable, meaning it provides greater
protection for the passengers than a glass windscreen, in a collision. The
proposed drive train is a hybrid setup which uses an internal combustion
engine working in conjunction with 4 in-wheel electric motors. This concept
is the key to future car design, manufacturing technology, safety standards
and user experience.
