Porsche 911: Class reunion
The Porsche 911 (pronounced as Nine Eleven, German: Neunelfer) is a luxury
2-door sports coupe made by Porsche AG of Stuttgart, Germany. It has a
distinctive design, rear engined and with independent rear suspension, an
evolution of the swing axle on the Porsche 356. The engine was also
air-cooled until the introduction of the Type 996 in 1998. Since its
introduction in autumn 1963, it has undergone continuous development,
though the basic concept has remained little changed.
Throughout its lifetime, the 911 has been modified by private teams and by
the factory itself for racing, rallying and other forms of automotive
competition. It is among the most successful competition cars ever. In the
mid 1970s, normally aspirated 911 Carrera RSRs won major world championship
sports car races such as Targa Florio, Daytona, Sebring and Nürburgring,
even against prototypes. The 911-derived 935 turbo also won the coveted 24 Hours of Le Mans in
In the 1999 international poll for the award of Car of the Century, the 911
came fifth. It is one of two in the top five that had remained
continuously in production (the original Beetle remained in production
until 2003), and was until 1998 the most successful surviving
application of the air- (now water-) cooled opposed rear engine layout
pioneered by its original ancestor, the Volkswagen Beetle. It is one of the
oldest sports coupe nameplates still in production.

Ever since it was introduced in 1974, the Porsche 911 turbo has been the point at which the car morphs
from sports car into full-on supercar. And if you want even more power, go
for this model, the turbo S.
For the last decade or so the Porsche's rival has been the Nissan GT-R.
It's a technology-filled car, and Nissan has engaged in a top trumps-style
battle with Porsche, getting faster Nurburgring times and even faster 0-60 performance.
So which one's better away from the restrictions of the road, and which
one's going to be faster against
the stopwatch? Let's find out in an Auto Express track battle in the video
The most powerful 911 in the range, the turbo S provides an extra 39bhp, taking the output
of the 3.8-litre straight-six up to 552bhp and delivering a whopping 700Nm
At just under £80,000, the Nissan GT-R is a pound-per-performance bargain
compared to the Porsche. Nissan's Technology Pack showcases a 3.8-litre
twin-turbo engine which pumps out 542bhp
and 632Nm of torque.

2013 SRT Viper vs 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series! - Head 2 Head Ep. 36
On this episode of Head 2 Head, Motor Trend's Jonny Lieberman pits two
members of the "more than 600 horsepower club" against
each other - the 2013 SRT Viper & the 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black
Series. It's a three-bout heavyweight match that begins with real world
canyon carving, moves on to an all-out quarter mile drag race, and then
finishes with blistering hot laps around Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca with hot
shoe Randy Pobst.
Despite a huge gap in price, both of these long-nosed, front-engine, RWD,
two-seat brawlers represent significant revisions of their wild
predecessors. Will good old fashion American muscle beat out German
Engineering? Join us as we find out.
Head 2 Head appears every other Wednesday on the Motor Trend channel.
