E46 M3 vs Subaru WRX
(READ FULL DESCRIPTION) Back in the day. My E46 M3 ...sounded so shitty before I did Exhaust, yes I do realize this..** At the time I had: AMK racing headers, a K&N cold air intake, a CSL carbon fiber Roof, and a CSL carbon fiber trunk. (minimal weight savings but still some) --------------------------------------------------------------------- Yes the S54 (e46 M3's engine) with no cats on stock Exhaust with all resonators removed (as in this video) sounds like total shit IMO. Its not as though I said "Yeah that sounds awesome!" and built it that way. It is probably the most difficult engine ever to remove the enormous amounts of rasp from. When I first put on the catless headers I actually thought something metallic was rattling in the engine --- this was simply pure Exhaust note. After this video I made an Exhaust setup that sounded truly amazing (2x AR25 resonators in section 2 and an El Diablo Exhaust). It cut down rasp and made it sound exotic. Remember some rasp is good, but everyone always wants a deep rumble down low, with only a flare of high end rasp.(listen to Italian motors to hear what I'm talking about). E46 M3 owners out there-- It can be done. Non-M owners -- Remember, it may sound like a rasp bucket, but this is partly due to very high compression in a race *spec-ish* engine (look up formula 1, or any racing engine videos with high revving motors with free-flow Exhausts and you will likely hear similar rasp)-- But yes, it is very fast. 355-365bhp (recorded for NO cat builds like this) out of 3.2 liters naturally aspirated. Around 110+hp / liter is very nice, (divide out some other hp/liter ratios of other non-turbo cars you like -- you may be surprised) but does make strange noises most are not used to hearing coming from in inline 6.
