The production-based cars with 1.6 L direct injection turbo engine and four-wheel drive are built to World Rally Car regulations for racing across tarmac, gravel and snow. The power output is limited to around 300 bhp (225 kW). Current cars in the championship include the Citroën DS3 WRC, Ford Fiesta RS WRC and Mini WRC. The WRC was formerly held for Group A and Group B rallycars. However, due to the increasing power, lack of reliability and a series of fatal accidents on the 1986 season, Group B was permanently banned. Later, in 1997, the Group A cars evolved into the WRC car spec, to ease the development of new cars and bring new makes to the competition. In 2011, new rules were introduced to encourage more manufacturers (and privateers) to take part, because the recent economic downturn had prompted several manufacturers to leave the championship. Cars in the Production Car World Rally Championship are limited to production-based cars homologated under Group N rules. Cars in the Super 2000 World Rally Championship are homologated under Super 2000 rules. Most cars in the Junior World Rally Championship are homologated under Super 1600 rules, but Group N and selected Group A cars can also contest the series. Starting in 2013,a new category of rally cars known as Group R were introdued as a replacement to the Group A and Group N rally categories, with cars classified under one of six categories based on their engine capacity and type, wheelbase, and drivetrain. As a result no cars will be homologated under Group A and Group N regulations and instead will be reclassified under Group R. Parallel to this, the Super 2000 and Production Car World Championships were restructured; Super 2000 and Group N cars were merged into a single championship known as World Rally Championship-2 alongside R4 and R5 cars, whilst the Production Car World Championship was completely reimagined as the World Rally Championship-3 for two-wheel drive cars complying with R1, R2 and R3 regulations. WRC Teams and Drivers 20 different manufacturers have won a World Rally Championship event,[6] and a further ten have finished on the podium.[7] Suzuki and Subaru pulled out of the WRC at the end of the 2008 championship, both citing the economic downturn then affecting the automotive industry for their withdrawal. Mini and Ford both pulled out of the WRC at the end of the 2013 championship, due to a similar economic downturn affecting the European market. A typical WRC team will consist of about 40 people on the events, with a further 60--100 at the team base.[8] Manufacturers and manufacturer-backed teams usually have two or three drivers participating in each rally who are eligible to score points. The total number of crews (driver and his co-driver) in the rallies varied from 47 (Monte Carlo and Mexico) to 108 (Great Britain) during the 2007 season.[9] In 2013, The Ford World Rally Team and The Mini WRC Team both announced their departure from the World Rally Championships for the 2013 season. Forgotten Volkswagen Single Cab
How does an old Volkswagen Single Cab get buried under 3 feet of dirt? Took 45 years to bury this Volkswagen and almost 2 days to dig it out. Have a look. Took the Syncro for a Sunday drive and spotted an old single cab in the foothills outside Idaho Falls. This is nine hours worth of digging condensed into a 15 minute video. It had been sitting in a wash since 1967. It was buried under two feet of dirt but it's extremely rust free given the circumstances. The drop gates hadn't seen the light of day for 45 years. Circuit of Ireland Rally 2014 - ERC Rally Ireland 2014 HD Circuit of Ireland Rally 2014 United Kingdom - Asphalt Esapekka Lappi has enjoyed an Easter Good Friday to remember with a stunning performance on leg one of the Discover Northern Ireland Circuit of Ireland Rally, putting him on course for win number two in this year's FIA European Rally Championship. Finn Lappi, in a ŠKODA Fabia Super 2000, was fastest on seven of today's sun-baked 10 stages to build up a lead of 12.6s over Craig Breen at the overnight halt in Belfast's Titanic Quarter. However, with the longest day of the rally still to come, there promises to be some serious competition ahead on Saturday's eight tests. Breen is not giving up on winning his home round of the ERC in Peugeot's new-generation 208T16, while Lappi anxious to finish ahead of his rival in order to Boost his title bid. "It was almost a perfect day," said the 23-year-old Lappi. "We just lost three stages and I don't know why I lost the time to be honest. Even if Craig is going faster tomorrow we are second because there is a big gap to the others and I said before the start I want to finish on the podium and I won't be doing any stupid mistakes and risking everything. It's exciting for the championship but maybe I have to beat him because he is in front of me [in the title battle]." Prior to the start, Lappi feared that he would struggle to make an impact on the ERC qualifier due to a lack of confidence on the challenging Tarmac stages. But he has excelled throughout the day and suggested there is even more speed to come from him and co-driver Janne Ferm. Breen ended Lappi's run of stage wins with the quickest time on stage eight. However, he twice lost time smashing the rear windscreen of his Peugeot on landing one of the many jumps that litter the high-speed Hamiltons Folly test. He also ripped the rear bumper from his car swiping a bank following a huge moment while driving flat out in fifth gear on the second Bucks Head stage. "I can't say I'm happy to be second but when Esapekka is putting in the times he's doing you have to look at the bigger picture," said Breen, the current European championship leader. "The gap is not so big and we were quite fast on the last three stages today, the most enjoyable day of driving in my life because the stages are out of this world. Tomorrow will be an interesting fight and I'm sure it will be a case of the bravest man will win." Kevin Abbring was in a close battle with Breen for second when a broken radiator forced him to retire his 208T16 for the second rally in a row. However, the Dutchman was still able to demonstrate his huge potential. Abbring's misfortune handed the final spot on the provisional podium to Irish Ford Fiesta R5 driver Robert Barrable, who starts day two 8.8s ahead of Germany's Sepp Wiegand in the second factory Fabia. Sam Moffett had been closer to the fight for third only to lose time with an overshoot on the day-closing Newtownards street stage, which attracted an estimated 25,000 fans. He's 16.5s adrift of Wiegand with Frenchman Robert Consani sixth on his fourth rally in a four-wheel-drive car. This is the first time we've ever witnessed an accident at a speed ventures autocross. It was a pretty fast track and it was his first time up since his last break so the tires were pretty cold & so was the track. Unfortunately the driver never touched his brakes after he lost control.
