Heater Core Replacement How To - Ford Crown Victoria / Lincoln Town Car / Mercury Grand Marquis
How to replace the heater core on a 1985 Ford Crown Victoria LTD. The
procedure for removal and installation should be the same for the Grand
Marquis and Town car of the same vintage. This job was kind of a pain, but
worth it since winter is coming. Be careful when buying the replacement
core, I tried to buy at autozone, and their system calls for the wrong one
for this car, part number 94622. the correct part number for the autozone /
spectra premium core is 94620.
Lincoln Heater Core Replacement
This video is not meant to be a professional instruction on how to do this
work!!! I wish I could do one!!! Overall, I am just showing you what's
involved to hopefully eliminate some fear on a DIY job. Dealer time to do
this repair is hefty because the dash has to be pulled back. This edit
note above was written August 2012--8 months after the work and all's well.
The best part is that I no longer inhale subtle antifreeze odor.
Removing 1989 Lincoln Towncar Heater Core. Time spent was considerably
more than the book time of 6+ hours. Core cost $28. Add $2 for
antifreeze. I needed no additional tools than what I had. If your
windshield fogs and you smell antifreeze, chance is good that your heater
core is leaking. The Lincoln core is located inside a plenum box and
chance of seeing leakage is nil. The result was decent. I have plenty of
hot fresh air (seemingly with more volume). On the downside, I believe the
main plenum door does not close fully which allows air movement on the dash
vents level--but all positions still work well. Not mentioned--you must
push back into the engine compartment-- a grommet with 3 vacuum lines (one
is green) and be sure to reposition that before you reinstall the plenum.
Also a dash brace located on the drivers side of the radio must be
released--one bolt. There is a vacuum line block connector that must be
disconnected near the glovebox. Look for this before pulling out the
plenum. I do not mention that. Follow slender black vac lines to access
it. The plenum must be pulled back --moved right and rotated down--pipes
onto carpet to remove. It will be upside down when you get it to the
floor. Be sure to plug the core pipes. About 2 cups of fluid will come
out of the removed core. It is a pain to raise this core up under the dash
to permit installation. You must be able to control the loose dash as
well. Be sure not to abuse the dash on lowering it and or moving it. Be
prepared to support it when the bolts are removed. There are 2 lower bolts
on the front side near the door frames in addition to the windshield
screws. Disclaimer--Sorry for poor video; audio and/or descriptions.
Note---this job requires (IMO)---space; time and a comfortable environment.
I wouldn't do this outdoors in the winter nor if the job had to be done
the same day.1989 Lincoln Towncar Heater Core removal. This movie shows
most of the steps to enable you to remove a heater core. Labor books show
this as a plus 6 hour job in a shop, but my time was considerably more.
Cost of the heater core was $28. The most important tool is a mini ratchet
screwdriver capable of reaching the 6 dash screws close to the windshield.
There is a dash bracing arm which must be released (not in video)--a bolt
on the drivers side area of the radio. It is an obvious item.
DISCLAIMER--Sorry for poor video; audeo and/or wrong descriptions. Notes
were added to clarify or point out missed items.

Since 1991, Town Car only offered the Ford 4.6L SOHC V8. Since 2003, it
has produced 239HP which is put down to the rear wheels through an ancient
4 speed auto. This version of the 4.6L is underpowered for it size. IMO
Ford should of made the Intech DOHC or even the 3-Valve version like from
the Mustang GT. Ford also
could've used their 6 speed auto like Found on the 2006+ V8 Explorer or
2007+ Expedition. Independent rear suspension also would've been a huge

Featuring a standard V8 engine, body-on-frame design, rear-wheel drive and
large exterior and interior dimensions, the Town Car was based on the
Ford Panther platform. This gave it powertrain and suspension commonality
with the Mercury Grand Marquis and the Ford LTD Crown Victoria (later the
Crown Victoria). This design made them durable even in the rough conditions
taxi and livery cars are subjected to, and easy and cheap to repair when
they did suffer damage. Town Cars are typically operated in commercial
service for at least 400,000 miles.
Its large dimensions made it the largest car in production in North
America. From 1997 to 2011, the Town Car was the longest car (but not the
heaviest) built in the Western Hemisphere, measuring nearly 18 feet (5.49
m) in length for a standard Town Car and 18.5 feet (5.64 m) for an L
Lincoln is also believed to be preparing a true Town Car successor on a
rear-wheel drive platform to rival the Mercedes S-Class and BMW 7-series
The Town Car underwent a minor exterior facelift for the 1995 model year.
Changes to the exterior included smaller, clear headlights as well as
additional running lights in the rear. Larger door mirrors were
body-colored (formerly chrome), and were moved slightly forward on the door
itself. Updated bumpers front and rear, new body side moldings, and the
deletion of the small fixed window in the rear doors completed the exterior
changes. The antenna was removed from the outside of the car and integrated
into the rear window.
1995 also saw the introduction of a new steering wheel, which was used in
all Panther-based sedans from 1998 to 2004. In addition to the cruise
Also introduced in 1995 was a new digital dash layout (replacing the unit
used since 1993) that featured a more italicized look to the readouts,
while the exterior temperature readout moved from the dash cluster to the
climate control panel. A "miles to go" trip computer feature was added.
Dual power recliners with lumbar support—as well as a three-position
driver's seat and mirror memory function became standard (formerly
optional) on Signature Series which could be assigned to the keyless entry
remotes as well as the up to four personal keyless entry codes. Heated
seats were a new option, and door panel switches now featured (slight)
illumination from a lamp located below the interior door handle. Power door
lock switches were back-lit, and were mounted high up on the driver and
passenger door panels. The fuel door release (previously mounted in the
center dash panel) and trunk release button moved from inside the glove
compartment to the lower driver's side door panel. Similar to the previous
year, Signature and Cartier models featured dual clamshell storage armrests
up front with cassette storage, coin holder, and an optional Cell phone.
The 1997 Cartier models held dual cup holders in the rear center armrest,
and offered lighted vanity mirrors in the headliner for the two outboard
rear seating positions.
With the demise of the Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham after 1996, the Town Car
became the last of its kind: the last American full-size, rear-wheel drive
luxury car. The demise of the Fleetwood also made the Town Car the largest
mass-produced car available in North America.

A little about me. I have been the manager at Infiniti of Kirkland since
2004 and prior to that I ran a high end car boutique in neighboring
Bellevue, Washington. For my career I have sold over 10,000 cars so I hope
to bring you far more insight than you might ever know to even ask. I show
you in some videos how to see if a car has been in an accident, how to make
a great buy on a car with a bad Carfax, or why I wouldn't personally buy a
car even if it has favorable reviews. Every once in a while I'll even have
a little fun to keep the videos fresh but I want to make certain you know
that you can always email me at email@example.com if you ever
