Review: 2005 BMW 330Ci ZHP
I review the 2005 BMW 330Ci ZHP. These are great cars, all of the M3
suspension compenents without the M3 engine, these cars are a lot of fun!
What do you think about this car? Would you rather have this or an M3?

250 bhp, 3,430 cc inline SOHC six-cylinder engine, five-speed manual
transmission, independent coil-over-strut front suspension, independent
coil spring semi-trailing arm rear suspension, and four-wheel power
hydraulic disc brakes. Wheelbase: 103.3 in.
In factory nomenclature, "E9," the BMW 3.0 CS Coupe, was a Karmann-built
two-door based on the New Class 2000CS. Enlarged to accommodate the M30
engine from the E3 sedan, it had appeared first in 2.8-liter guise. In all,
4,455 were built from 1971 to 1974. A 3.0 CSL special homologation version
for the European Touring Car Championship competition enhanced BMW's
reputation as a manufacturer of sporting automobiles.
This car received an extensive cosmetic and mechanical restoration at La
Jolla Independent BMW in California, in 2010. At that time, many
performance and convenience upgrades were undertaken, including the
installation of a rebuilt 3.5-liter engine, a new BMW 265 five-speed
transmission, a limited slip differential, and a major suspension rebuild.
The engine has a new head and a completely rebuilt bottom end with new
pistons. The suspension was rebuilt with Carl Nelson lowering springs,
Suspension Techniques sway bars, new control arms, and new Bilstein shock
A BMW E30 electric sunroof was retrofitted, along with Euro bumpers, a 3.0
CSL front air dam, and 5-Series window motors. The air conditioning was
upgraded to a Sanden compressor and converted to R-134a refrigerant. In the
process, all body seals and gaskets were replaced, the body meticulously
prepped and painted in a handsome deep grey metallic.
Convenience upgrades include a Nardi steering wheel, a quartz clock
conversion, a Becker Europa AM/FM stereo radio modified for iPod and
satellite radio operation, and the installation of a hidden Garmin Zumo 665
GPS with Bluetooth and weather function. The tan leather interior was
restored by Juan Ortiz, of Ortiz Auto Trim in Costa Mesa. The Alpina
turbine-style wheels carry Sumitomo P225/50R16 blackwall radial tires.
Having covered fewer than 1,000 miles since the restoration, the car is in
exceptional condition, showing just minor evidence of recent use.
Presenting a stunning appearance, it demonstrates excellent performance,
due to its upgraded drivetrain, and modern convenience, a result of its
high-tech electronics and modifications. Ideal for touring, it is equally
enjoyable in town or the city.

In Part-2 of this two part series, we will replace the rear shock and
spring. See Part- for the front shock/spring/strut replacement.
The Bentley repair manuals will cover standard shock and spring replacement
for the various BMW and MINI models. This DIY will assume that the DIYer
has the applicable Bentley manual for additional reference as well as
fastener torque values. Note that we will be installing the Bilstein
PSS-10 coil-over kit. However, the procedures would be the same for any
common shock/strut replacement (including installing sport springs, if

REAR (applies directly to the E46 3-series, but the E36 3-series uses the
same steps and procedures):
1) Safely raise the rear of car, with suspension hanging.
2) Remove the wheels.
3) Place a jack under the lower shock mount eye or the wheel hub assembly.
Slightly raise the suspension (just enough to remove the downward tension
on the shock).
4) Remove the lower shock mount bolt.
5) Lower the jack and allow the suspension to hang free.
6) Remove the trunk side trim panel to access the upper shock mount.
7) Remove the two 13mm nuts from the upper shock mount, at the top of the
8) Lower the shock out of the vehicle.
9) Assemble the new shock with new compression bumper, dust tube and upper
mount. Be sure to re-use the large lower and upper washers for the upper
mount. These washers must cup away from the mount. lower washer cups
downward and upper washer cups upward.
10) If the spring is being replaced, it can be removed BEFORE
re-installing the shock. Have a helper pull downward on the wheel hub
assembly and pull the spring out from between the chassis and the upper
11) Using new upper and lower spring pads, install the new spring in the
same manner as the original was removed. Install the new spring pads, then
install the spring.
12) Install the new shock. Place a new shock mount gasket on the shock
mount and insert the assembly up into the shock tower. If installing a
shock mount reinforcement plate, place the plate over the two shock mount
studs, on top of the shock tower, before installing the two nuts. Install
the two nuts. Install the trunk trim panel.
13) Install the lower shock mount bolt. Be sure to install the washer on
the bolt before installing the bolt. Use the jack to raise the suspension
assembly to align the lower shock mount with the hub mounting point, so the
bolt can be inserted and threaded. Tighten the bolt.
14) Repeat for the other side.
