Is It Numbers Matching? - Cougar by the Numbers
In this video we delve into the complex topic of decoding tags, date codes,
and other numbers to check if your classic Ford / Mercury is "numbers
matching," using Don's newly acquired '69 Mercury Cougar XR7 428 Cobra Jet
convertible as an example. While we haven't covered the subject 100% in
this video (to keep it concise) we think this covers most of the major
components and gives you the knowledge you need to figure out what your
numbers mean. As mentioned in the video, we highly recommend Marti Auto
Works, especially his Tagbook, which made this video possible. Visit him

This is the story of Brian Aust and his 1968 Mercury Cougar 427 GT-E. Over
the course of about 5 years, he undertook a painstaking restoration to
bring the car to the highest level he could, with a little help from his
friends (and lots of advice from folks on http://www.mercurycougar.net ).
On January 22, 2011, he drove it onto the auction block at Barrett-Jackson,
stepped out, and watched it sell for... well, you'll just have to watch to

133120 / 1970 Mercury Cougar Eliminator Boss 302
For more information on this vehicle visit http://tinyurl.com/9fpv8je
Ready for a different kind of pony car? Take a close look at this pristine
1970 Mercury Cougar Eliminator. Fresh out of a comprehensive restoration,
this cat has and aggressive demeanor and plenty of power to back it up.
Restored to factory specifications, the body panels are straight in true in
every way. A coat of Ford's code N Pastel Blue covers the body, accented by
the black body-length stripes courtesy of the Eliminator package. While the
color may look white, there is a subtle blue tint that is guaranteed to
make this Mercury stand out in the crowd. Panel fitment is also far
superior to anything that left Ford's Dearborn plant in 1970.
Other pieces of the Eliminator package include a front chin spoiler,
blacked-out grilled, hood scoop, an air foil wing and discrete "Eliminator"
decals. The glass appears to be original as does the stainless trim around
it but both are in excellent condition overall. With its race-friendly
look, this is very clearly no common Cougar.
Under the hood, a familiar 290hp Boss 302 V8 provides more than enough
motivation to push this cat around town. From the properly decaled single
snorkel air cleaner to the date-code correct block, everything about the
powerplant looks as it did when it left the factory. The engine fires
immediately, idles well and has a menacing snarl to warn other drivers
exactly what is beside.
Beneath the car, a nicely detailed undercarriage consists of a factory
chassis with factory-correct overspray gracing the rock solid floor fans.
In the center, a Hurst-equipped Toploader 4-speed takes care of gear
selection while a nodular Ford nine-inch differential with 3.91 gears puts
the power the road. Steering is manual but braking is power assisted with
discs in the front and drums out back. The chassis meets the road through
Goodyear Polyglas tires wrapped around steel wheels topped with dog-dish
hubcaps and chrome beauty rings.
Between the doors, a Medium Blue interior is simple, comfortable and
functional. The hi-back bucket seats are wrapped in Comfortweave vinyl and
face a factory dashboard that houses the original instrumentation plus
climate controls and an AM/FM stereo. With the exception of the aluminum
Hurst shift handle, there are no frills to be found here. Behind the rear
seat, the trunk features a correct mat, jack and spare tire.
Documentation for this Cougar is strong with an original build sheet,
dealer invoice and several records that spell out the car's full history.
There is also a Marti Report that covers everything down to production
In this form, it's easy to imagine the Cougar as less of a sibling and more
of a rival to the Mustang.
With the Boss 302 and slick shifting Toploader, this cat offers all the fun
in a unique shell. Call, click or visit http://rkmotorscharlotte.com for

67-68 Cougar Buying Guide: What To Look For
In this video, Don does a detailed inspection on a 1967 Mercury Cougar XR-7

classic cars. Some of the insight here can potentially save you hundreds,
even thousands, when you go to negotiate with a seller. Also, it will help

1978 Mercury Grand Marquis Video 1 Owner 6.6L 400 V8 Classic Youngtimer Lincoln Town Car Ford Sedan
78 Mercury Grand Marquis 312,000 Miles Near Mint 1 Owner 6.6L 400 Big Block
Classic Youngtimer http://www.1ownercarguy.com This is a very cool car.
Usually I like cars with really low miles but this car is sol cool because
it has 312,000 original miles on it and runs like a newer car. This is only
a 1 Owner Car and yes the miles are actual. The previous owner drove the
car back and fourth from Canada to California. You would never guess the
miles by looking at the car. The factory baby blue paint is in great shape
and has a very nice shine to it. The factory white vogue top looks great on
the car and is in about as good of shape as you will find. The body is
straight as can be and the paint is original. It has the 6.6L 400 engine
that fires right up and runs great. It has been rebuilt along with many
other things on the car. I talked to the mechanics that worked on the car
and they remembered the guy and how good he took care of his car and really
liked it. You would have to really like a car to put that many miles on it.
The car feels and handles like a newer car and just floats down the road.
The interior is in mint condition along with the rest of the car. Only the
drivers seat shows minimal wear. It looks like he was the only one that
made the trips because none of the other seats look like they hardly ever
got sat in. Everything about this car is just clean as can be. You won't
find another car like this.

Front Suspension & Chassis Upgrades - '68 Cougar / Mustang
In this video, we show some of the ways you can easily stiffen your car's
chassis and upgrade your front suspension. Using Andrew's '68 Cougar as a
guinea pig, we bolt on, and weld on, some simple parts that will make a big
difference in reducing the torsional flex that these front ends are prone
to, as well as improving the integrity of the shock towers.

The Mercury Colony Park was the top-of-the-line full-size station wagon
offered by Mercury between 1957 and 1991. It wore woodgrain paneling on the
bodysides and tailgate, as did the 1957-1991 Ford Country Squire and the
1958 Edsel Bermuda wagons.
For 1979, Mercury joined its Detroit rivals in downsizing its largest
models, resulting in a car considerably smaller and lighter than its
predecessor. With the downsizing, the former 400- and 460-cubic-inch
engines were discontinued, and the 351-cubic-inch Windsor V8 became the
largest available in the Colony Park. All Colony Parks were equipped with
standard 8-passenger seating and exterior woodgrain siding.
The 351 would be dropped early in the 1980s, as most customers deemed the
302 Windsor engine sufficiently powerful.
This generation of Colony Park would see few substantial changes during its
12-year lifespan, garnering only minor grille and trim revisions annually
through 1987. In 1988, the entire front grille headlamp assembly (shared
with the Grand Marquis) was redesigned for a more modern and aerodynamic
appearance, and then in 1990, the instrument panel was revamped to allow
the addition of a driver's side airbag.
When the Grand Marquis was redesigned with aero-styling for 1992, the
Colony Park station wagon was dropped from Mercury's lineup. By that time,
full-size station wagons were no longer popular due to the increasing
popularity of minivans and SUVs. The last full-size station wagons, the
Chevrolet Caprice, the Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser and the Buick Roadmaster
Estate ended production in 1996. In 2005, DaimlerChrysler briefly
reintroduced the Dodge Magnum name on a full-size wagon, based on the LX
platform Chrysler 300, but it was dropped in 2008.
