Unlimited Street VW drag racing, Las Vegas & Sacramento 2004
"It sounds like what it is, heads-up" Street cars racing whatever VW engine combo they want; turbos, Nitrous, etc. These drag racers had to drive from the hotel in Vegas to the track, so trailer queens were out. Other rules included minimum 1700lbs. with driver, both front seats in, cars licensed and insured, muffler, full working lights, and no wheelie bars. http://www.DragRacingTV.com

VW drag racing: Tar Babe, Underdog, Dyno-Soar, Hater Maker, BUG-IN 35
VW drag racing passes, including Jon Schweers in the former Dan Lawson CE notchback, debut of the VW Paradise Hater Maker VW Pro Mod beetle(?), with Kris Lauffer behind the wheel, making TNT passes, and Mike Cruz in the insane Nitrous-powered VW single cab bus. Is this the fastest Volkswagen bus on the planet? He's running deep into the 11's, with lots left. Trick or Cheat takes the wheelstand title of the event, with Larry Hanson getting air coming out of the waterbox. R.I.P. Les Navales, from the Trick or Cheat team. Jesse Hardin also makes a pass, in the blue VW Der Renn Kafer Cup bug, with Shawn Geers crewing. This VW drag racing video wraps up with the Fleming and Aronson Tar Babe, Underdog, and Dean Lowry D.D.S. Dyno-Soar cars all squaring off against each other. These VW bugs have been meticulously restored, but mechanical problems made it rather anti-climatic. Ultimately, it was Lee Leighton, at 80 years old, who really put the hammer down in this VW nostalgia drag racing segment. http://www.DragRacingTV.com

Super Street VW Drag Racing: PRA '95, Ocean Street Video
Gary Berg came out of retirement to make an appearance at the Sacramento Bugorama, in the famous Berg Super Street VW Beetle. He ran head on into the ascending star, Andy Costello, and a serious duel ensued. Both drivers pushed each other into new E.T. records, and a final confrontation. Other Sacramento Super Street action included Candy Larsen of JCL Race Cars, nearly beating the odds with a two-day-old engine in the right-hand drive Ghia, that Shin Watanabe used to race. These days you can find Candy running in the Powder Puff series, where the competition can be plenty tough. If you ask her how difficult it was to learn how to shift a right-hand drive race car, against the likes of Rafael Vasquez, Andy Costello, Gary Berg, Chris Tool, etc., she'll probably tell you that it was no big deal. 1995 marked the emergence of Shawn Geers as a serious player in the PRA Pro ranks, and it could have also been the first time that Super Street Dave Perkins ran the class.

VW drag racing in Der Renn-Kafer Cup show cars, circa 2001.
VW drag racing with street-legal, all-motor show cars. The winners were determined by a combination of show points and drag racing performance. The Der Renn-Kafer Cup idea was first conceived by some of the Orange County DKP car club members, and all of the promoters on the PRA drag racing circuit supported it. The first DRKC event was held at the now-defunct LACR drag strip, in Palmdale CA, in 1999. At one point, there were 20 or 21 Volkswagens that showed up at the Phoenix BOR, which was the biggest turnout ever for the class. Frenchy Dehoux is the man behind the microphone at the VW Classic, with "Dyno" Don Chamberlin doing the trackside duties. A couple of VW legends!
