1972 Polaris Mustang 530 Snowmobile
This classic Polaris Mustang 530 snowmobile was rescued
from sitting for nearly 20 years. The main problems were a broken choke
cable, slides wore down just to the fiberglass rails and the entire brake
system was seized. Was able to repair the choke cable by fabricating a
small aluminum block to fit inside the "Y" in the cable to re-connect the
separated single cable from the dashboard to the 2 cables that run to
carbs. It was a horrible job to replace the completely worn slides with new
ones on the old style fiberglass rails. The brake system surprisingly works
very well and doesn't leak after cleaning out lots of corrosion from both
the master and slave cylinders. Parts purchased online from
www.denniskirk.com to repair this snowmobile: slides for track/suspension,
tail light cover, brake pads and a handlebar on/off switch. Other online
suppliers sold the old style steel track rivets and backing plates. It took
awhile to find a modern replacement headlamp, since the dual hi/low bulbs
are no longer produced I went with a single filament HI lamp 36watt 12volt
PAR36. At some point I may try a 5watt LED star bulb fitted to a modified
burned out halogen lamp case. New paint on the skis and Exhaust muffler really brought it to life.
Pieces of the air cleaners were missing, so I just used some heavy
stainless steel screen cut in a circle to fit. A set of HotGrips were
installed with a custom dash switch plate, though generator has a hard time
with headlights and hand warmers on at same time. Some parts I could not
order, so I custom made out of Polycarbonate Sheet Plastic: Windshield
(1/8" thick plastic, which is almost too thick, 1/16" might've worked
better) and left side Headlight Cover (1/16" thick plastic). A simple saw
horse jig and a heat gun was used to form the plastic after first making
cardboard templates of the missing pieces. The bottom edges of the
fiberglass hood were starting to separate, so it was strengthened with
fiberglass matting and epoxy. With early CDI ignition system it starts easy
and runs excellent.
