BMW E46 Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement Alternator Belt Tensioner Idler Pulley Retrofit
In this video I show you how easy it is to remove and replace the main drive belt and idler pulley for the tensioner which often can make unpleasant noises when it is failing. I add tips and tricks and go over how to fully assemble the hydraulic tensioner which is the replacement for the mechanical tensioner. This is an easy DIY project when your follow along with my video showing you step by step how to replace this tensioner.

A 2001 3.0i Z3 with the M54 engine was used for this video. The procedures shown can be applied, in general, to most BMW models that have serpentine type accessory drive belts. This includes most 6-cylinder models from the early '90s on and all V8 models. Note that the models shown here uses a mechanical type belt tensioner for both the main belt and the AC belt. Some models employ a hydraulic tensioner assembly. The replacement procedures are slightly different, as they are for the V8 models. DIY: Replacing a BMW Tensioner - E36 M3
http://www.AutoWerksofAmerica.com/ Replacing a BMW tensioner is easy. This video uses an E36 M3 as an example of how to replace BMW tensioners for both the driver's side and passenger side. The tensioner wheels and the idler wheel also get replaced. Remove the plastic bits from the underside, the cruise control mechanism, air box and fan to get access to both belts. Remove the passenger side belt, then the driver's side. Check for cracks and prepare to replace them as needed. If the pulley wheels spin freely, they're going bad and should be replaced. Chasing down the true source of your under-the-hood squeal can be a painful trial-and-error experience. After the tensioners have been replaced BE SURE that the belts are correctly installed and aligned.

Follow along as we replace the reservoir/filter and flush the fluid on a 2001 330xi, The power steering fluid and filter are one of the most overlooked preventive maintenance areas on most BMWs and MINIs. (Think about it -- when did you ever changed the power steering fluid on any vehicle?) On BMWs, this system provides Boost not just for the steering but often for the power brakes and self-leveling suspensions, as well. Time and time again, we'll look at the power steering fluid in a BMW or MINI and it is filthy! (Running on old, degraded fluid will shorten the useful life of the steering rack/gearbox, brake Booster, fluid pump, etc.) The fluid should be bright, clear red or, depending on the application, just clean and clear One of the reasons this system gets overlooked is that there is no direct provision for changing the fluid; therefore the job is a bit more tedious. But it is not so tedious that it should be ignored. We recommend a biennial (every other year) or 50,000-mile fluid change for the power Boost system. Additionally, most systems have a fluid filter incorporated into the fluid reservoir. (A lot of mechanics do not even know that this filter exists!) Change the filter when changing the fluid. (This is also a great time to replace any leaking power steering hoses.) There are three different fluids used in BMWs and MINIs; the correct fluid is typically noted on a label on the reservoir cap. A quick video Comparing idler (deflection) pulley noise BEFORE and then AFTER a new one has been installed on a BMW 330i (E46) Here's a DIY on how to replace your bad idler pulley: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asu3FRyf7Ww You should replace your main Serpentine Belt at around 50-60K, so while the belt is removed... check your pulleys (Both the Idler AND Tensioner). Give them a quick spin and listen to how they sound. If they sound like anything like this video, definitely have them replaced. You should replace both pulleys at the same time, if possilbe. This DIY was performed on a 02 BMW E46 330i automatic, alpine white paint, with Sport Suspension Package, you know the drill. So if that is not your vehicle, there might be differences.

How to remove and replace a worn out idler (deflection) pulley on a BMW 330i (E46) NOTE: You'll need to loosen/remove the main Serpentine Belt to be able to remove the idler pulley Safely! This is done by releasing the force of the Tensioner Pulley. Torque specs: 45nm (~33 ft.lbs.) WARNING : BE CAREFUL when working on the Tensioner Pulley. There is quite a bit of force in this pulley! Also, to make working on the idler pulley easier, I removed the Airbox, Upper radiator hose, Radiator Fan and Fan shroud to give myself some more room to work within. These are not necessarily required removals, but they worked for me.
