All-New Chevrolet Sonic - North American Sedan version.
The American auto maker revealed that it will power all the Sonic models with efficient, power-dense, small-displacement engines, including the Ecotec 1.4 liter turbo and the Ecotec 1.8 liter, that are now also seen on the new Chevrolet Cruze. The company said that with the 1.8 liter engine, three transmissions that include a five-speed manual and six-speed automatic are available, while only a six-speed manual transmission is available with the 1.4 liter turbo engine.
All-New 2012 Buick Verano
All-New compact luxury sedan - 2012 Buick Verano.
The smallest in the Buick lineup, the Verano will offer the same Ecotec 2.4-liter and 2.0-liter turbocharged engines paired with a six-speed automatic transmission as its beefier sibling. However, output will be slightly reduced. The Verano's standard 2.4-liter engine delivers 177 horsepower and 170 lb-ft. of torque (compared to 182 in the Regal), and specs on the 2.0-liter turbocharged haven't been released. The Verano's 2.0-liter turbo will also have a six-speed manual transmission option. Estimated fuel economy for the compact sedan is 22 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway, which is a modest improvement over the 19/30 gas mileage in the Regal and is on par with its class competitors.

Even before the first models reach U.S. dealers, the Chevrolet Cruze is among the fastest-growing nameplates in the world with sales rising an average of 18 percent per month. Internationally, customers have purchased 140,000 Cruze in the first six months of 2010 and a total of 270,000 since Cruze launched in the spring of 2009 in Europe, followed by other major markets, such as China in summer of 2009. Cruze will begin arriving at U.S. dealerships in September. With U.S. models produced in Lordstown, Ohio, Cruze will be the only compact car built in the U.S. for the 2011 model year.

2012 Chevrolet Sonic presented at Detroit Auto Show 2011
The 2012 Sonic, Chevrolet's new compact car, is shown to the public at the NAIAS 2011. Key features and product highlights are explained. The Sonic replaces the Chevrolet Aveo for the 2012 model year.
2012 Chevy Sonic LTZ
General Motors yanked back the sheets on its newest sub-compact from Chevrolet; the 2012 Sonic. The five-door hatch and four-door sedan models will be available with either a standard 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine or an optional turbo'd 1.4-liter mill that can be ordered up with either a five-speed manual trans or a six-speed slushbox. At the time of the unveiling, GM was mum on the Sonic's estimated miles per gallon rating but The General is now ready to talk a little mpg.
The automaker is saying that the 2012 subcompact Sonic will achieve up to 40 mpg highway when it hits the market this fall. Though none of the numbers have been finalized by the EPA, GM's projected mileage figures seem highly likely considering that the Sonic packs the same powertrains as the heftier Chevrolet Cruze. The Cruze, which is rated at 24/36 mpg city/highway, obviously outweighs the Sonic and, therefore, we expect it to be the less fuel efficient vehicle of the two.
For the sake of comparison, the outgoing Aveo, equipped with a manual trans, achieved an EPA rating of 25/35 mpg city/highway. The Sonic's 40-mpg rating would place it on par with the Ford Fiesta and ahead of both the Honda Fit and the Toyota Yaris
► NEW 2012 Chevrolet Aveo Sedan
The Aveo 4-door Sedan joins it's cousin the hot hatch 5 door in the Chevrolet lineup. Welburn discusses in detail the "personality" behind the Aveo design, and the inspiration for its appearance inside and out. As more people around the globe are looking at small cars, it's important for them to know that small doesn't have to be boring, and this car has a spacious, up-market interior.
2012 Chevrolet Sonic Sedan
Chevrolet displayed the all-new 2012 Sonic at the 2011 North American International Auto Show. Its youthful, aggressive design is backed by turbocharged performance and agile ride and handling, combining to deliver an efficient, fun-to-drive small car.
The Chevrolet Sonic is offered in two body styles: a stylish four-door sedan and a sporty five-door. Each delivers class-leading rear-seat roominess and cargo space. A variety of connectivity features enhance the driving experience.
"The all-new Chevrolet Sonic blends the practicality of a small car with the passion for driving that Chevrolet vehicles like the Corvette are known for," said Chris Perry, vice president of Chevrolet marketing. "Its combination of great design, fun driving experience and the latest connectivity features create a serious competitor with a fun spirit."
Production of the Chevrolet Sonic begins later in 2011 at the General Motors Orion Assembly Center in Michigan, which received a $545-million investment in upgrades and retooling, and will help restore approximately 1,000 jobs in the metropolitan Detroit area.
"Chevrolet is the only company building a small car in the United States," said Perry. "We believe the Sonic will bring substance to the segment, with progressive styling, performance and value that will change perceptions of what a small car can be in America."

2012 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback
A show car version of the new Cruze hatchback will be Chevrolet's star attraction at this year's edition of the Paris motorshow, which kicks off on September 30. Even though GM uses the term 'show car', the five-door hatchback version of the Cruze is virtually production ready minus some show-floor bling such as the blue hue on the headlamps, big wheels and the LED daytime running lights.
While keeping the front end and taut body lines of the sedan model, the refreshingly stylish hatch comes with a sweeping coupe-like roofline and a unique rear end treatment. GM has not yet issued any photos of the cabin, but don't expect any changes over the four-door saloon.
According to the automaker, cargo capacity for the Cruze hatchback is close to 400 liters and will feature 60/40 split rear seating.
The available engine range will most likely be identical to the sedan that is currently offered in Europe with two petrol engines, a 113HP 1.6-liter and a 141HP 1.8-liter, plus a 123HP 2.0-liter turbo diesel.
The new Cruze 5-door hatchback will go on sale across Europe mid 2011 with prices announced nearer the launch date. More markets will get the car shortly after, though GM has not said if North America will be one of them.
Wayne Brannon, president and managing director of Chevrolet Europe, beleives the addition of a hatchback version to the range will further bolster the car's sales.
"Hatchbacks play a critical role in many markets," said Brannon. "The total compact segment in Europe represents around 4.8 million units which is over a quarter of the total market, with hatchbacks representing around 65% of that volume. We therefore expect to see increased business in a number of regions, while sending out a signal that Chevrolet is now a serious mainstream player in Europe."
The Cruze hatch is one of four world Chevrolet premieres at the Paris show and will join the new Orlando MPV, Captiva SUV facelift and the new Aveo.
The new 2012 Chevrolet Sonic (Hatchback and Sedan)
Comes with hatchback and sedan.
The Chevrolet Aveo is known as one of the least-expensive and least-liked subcompact cars you can buy. Now that Chevrolet has announced the Aveo's replacement, the little econobox will just become a bad memory. Meet the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic.
"The 2012 Chevrolet Sonic is the small car GM has been saying it will build for decades," says Inside Line. "This time, however, the Sonic has been given a stylish look along with a generous helping of the company's latest technology. Penalty box? No, just a smaller version of the company's best sedans. At least that's how Chevrolet is pitching it."
Still riding the wave of praise for the Chevrolet Cruze, an affordable small car that reviewers like for its upscale feel and comfortable cabin, Chevy is banking on the Sonic to extend the goodwill into the company's newest super-small car offering. AutoWeek reports, "The Sonic will come in two variants: a sedan that resembles a slimmed-down Cruze and a diminutive hatch. Two Ecotec engines will be available, including a 1.4-liter four-cylinder turbo pushing out 138 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque that can be paired with a six-speed manual gearbox. The standard engine will be a 1.8-liter four-cylinder making 135 hp and 123 lb-ft of torque; it will be offered with a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic gearbox."
Autoblog says that, with the Sonic, "it's clear that The General had its sights locked on the Fiesta from the get go. The Sonic hatchback packs more back seat room than its Blue Oval competitor and, with the rear bench folded flat, delivers more cargo room, as well."
While the press hasn't gotten a full look at the sonic, which debuts later today at the Detroit auto show, the early reviewers are positive. "Chevy has built a subcompact car that's appealing for reasons other than price or gas mileage," says Kicking Tires. With the Ford Fiesta already tearing up the affordable small car rankings, and an all-new 2012 Honda Civic set to bow later this year, the Sonic could have its work cut out for it. But, all the competition is only good news for small car shoppers, who suddenly have plenty of strong options to chose from.
