All-New Chevrolet Sonic - North American Sedan version.
The American auto maker revealed that it will power all the Sonic models with efficient, power-dense, small-displacement engines, including the Ecotec 1.4 liter turbo and the Ecotec 1.8 liter, that are now also seen on the new Chevrolet Cruze. The company said that with the 1.8 liter engine, three transmissions that include a five-speed manual and six-speed automatic are available, while only a six-speed manual transmission is available with the 1.4 liter turbo engine.
Porsche 918 RSR Hybrid Race Car
Porsche unveiled the 918 RSR hybrid race car, which boasts peak performance
of 767 hp. The 918 RSR is an evolution of the 911 GT3 R and the 918 Spyder
hybrid concepts last year. The 918 RSR is powered by the 563 hp. V8 from
the RS Spyder racer and has electric motor on each of the front wheels that
provide 75 kilowatts each for a total net horsepower of 767 at peak.
Regenerative braking creates the electric power, which is stored with a

2012 Chevy Sonic LTZ
General Motors yanked back the sheets on its newest sub-compact from
Chevrolet; the 2012 Sonic. The five-door hatch and four-door sedan models
will be available with either a standard 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine or
an optional turbo'd 1.4-liter mill that
can be ordered up with either a five-speed manual trans or a six-speed
slushbox. At the time of the unveiling, GM was mum on the Sonic's estimated
miles per gallon rating but The General is now ready to talk a little mpg.
The automaker is saying that the 2012 subcompact Sonic will achieve up to
40 mpg highway when it hits the market this fall. Though none of the
numbers have been finalized by the EPA, GM's projected mileage figures seem
highly likely considering that the Sonic packs the same powertrains as the
heftier Chevrolet Cruze. The Cruze, which is rated at 24/36 mpg
city/highway, obviously outweighs the Sonic and, therefore, we expect it to
be the less fuel efficient vehicle of the two.
For the sake of comparison, the outgoing Aveo, equipped with a manual
trans, achieved an EPA rating of 25/35 mpg city/highway. The Sonic's 40-mpg
rating would place it on par with the Ford Fiesta and ahead of both the
Honda Fit and the Toyota Yaris
2011 Chevrolet Sonic Z Spec Concept
General Motors seems intent on banishing all memories of the unloved Aveo
-- so much so that it's gone and renamed its entry-level fighter in the
States. While we're still not 100-percent in love with the name (we can't
get visions of spiky-haired hedgehogs out of our heads...), all three
flavors of the Sonic do appear to be vastly improved over the machine they
replace, though one of them, the Z Spec, is still in the concept stage.
More than anything else, they look vastly better both inside and out, but
until we get a stint behind the wheel we'll hold off final judgment.
According to Chris Perry, vice president of Chevrolet marketing, "The
all-new Chevrolet Sonic blends the practicality of a small car with the
passion for driving that Chevrolet vehicles like the Corvette are known
for." That won't be the only time you'll ever hear someone mention the
Sonic in the same sentence as the Corvette. In fact, Chevy tells us that
Corvette engineers are responsible for the ride and handling of the
The Sonic will be available in both sedan and hatchback bodystyles and with
either a 1.8-liter four-cylinder mated to a five-speed manual or six-speed
automatic, or a 1.4-liter turbocharged
mill with 138 horsepower that's hooked to
either an automatic or manual with six forward ratios. For those keeping
track, these are the same engines available in the slightly larger Cruze.
You'll also get a gauge cluster inspired by motorcycles, OnStar
connectivity, 10 airbags and plenty more

The new 2012 Chevrolet Sonic (Hatchback and Sedan)
Comes with hatchback and sedan.
The Chevrolet Aveo is known as one of the least-expensive and least-liked
subcompact cars you can buy. Now that Chevrolet has announced the Aveo's
replacement, the little econobox will just become a bad memory. Meet the
2012 Chevrolet Sonic.
"The 2012 Chevrolet Sonic is the small car GM has been saying it will build
for decades," says Inside Line. "This time, however, the Sonic has been
given a stylish look along with a generous helping of the company's latest
technology. Penalty box? No, just a smaller version of the company's best
sedans. At least that's how Chevrolet is pitching it."
Still riding the wave of praise for the Chevrolet Cruze, an affordable
small car that reviewers like for its upscale feel and comfortable cabin,
Chevy is banking on the Sonic to extend the goodwill into the company's
newest super-small car offering. AutoWeek reports, "The Sonic will come in
two variants: a sedan that resembles a slimmed-down Cruze and a diminutive
hatch. Two Ecotec engines will be available, including a 1.4-liter
four-cylinder turbo pushing out 138 hp
and 148 lb-ft of torque that can be paired with a six-speed manual gearbox.
The standard engine will be a 1.8-liter four-cylinder making 135 hp and 123
lb-ft of torque; it will be offered with a five-speed manual or a six-speed
Autoblog says that, with the Sonic, "it's clear that The General had its
sights locked on the Fiesta from the get go. The Sonic hatchback packs more
back seat room than its Blue Oval competitor and, with the rear bench
folded flat, delivers more cargo room, as well."
While the press hasn't gotten a full look at the sonic, which debuts later
today at the Detroit auto show, the early reviewers are positive. "Chevy
has built a subcompact car that's appealing for reasons other than price or
gas mileage," says Kicking Tires. With the Ford Fiesta already tearing up
the affordable small car rankings, and an all-new 2012 Honda Civic set to
bow later this year, the Sonic could have its work cut out for it. But,
all the competition is only good news for small car shoppers, who suddenly
have plenty of strong options to chose from.

"The all-new Chevrolet Sonic blends the practicality of a small car with

"Chevrolet is the only company building a small car in the United States,"
said Perry. "We believe the Sonic will bring substance to the segment, with
progressive styling, performance and value that will change perceptions of
what a small car can be in America."
