The climate control button for the A/C also had the word "Defog" added to it for the 2006 model year. Along with the 2005 model, the 2006 GTO was equipped with the 400 hp (300 kW), 6.0 L engine.
On February 21, 2006, Buick-Pontiac-GMC General Manager John Larson announced to dealers that GM would halt imports of the GTO in September, making 2006 the last model year for the new GTO. He stated the main reason for the cease in production was the GTO's inability to meet new airbag deployment standards that were going into effect in 2007.[15] This fate should have come as no surprise since this generation GTO was only intended as a limited production run for those 3 years from the beginning of the program.[citation needed]
The final production numbers of the 2006 Pontiac GTO are 13,948 cars, an increase from 11,069 from the previous model year.
The last Pontiac GTO, which was also the very last Monaro-based coupe produced, came off the assembly line in Australia on June 14, 2006.[16] Total production for all three years was 40,808 vehicles.[16]
Despite the lower than anticipated sales numbers and an unenthusiastic response by the American public, the new-age GTO has become a "sought after cult-car," with many loyal owners. Even though it was not a sales success, it was a vital lesson to GM that its regional divisions could not only work together, but that overseas divisions could engineer outstanding automobiles.[17]

Motorcycle drag racing (also known as "Sprints") involves two participants lining up at a dragstrip with a signaled starting line. Upon the starting signal, the riders accelerate down a quarter mile long, two lane, straight paved track where their elapsed time and terminal speed are recorded. The rider to reach the finish line first is the winner. The most well-known form of motorcycle drag racing is the Pro Stock Bike category, although several other categories exist, including 1,000 horsepower (750 kW) nitromethane engine.
Sportbike motorcycle drag racing involves racing motorcycles, often imported from Japan. Many sportbikes can such as the Suzuki Hayabusa, the Kawasaki ZX-14, or the BMW S1000R can perform a 1/4 mile drag race in the 9 second range with little to no modifications. 1/8th mile racing is also popular in some parts of the country.

Raw in-car video of me drag racing my 2006 GTO during the National F-Body Motorsports Event at O'Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis on May 15, 2009. My best run that day was a 12.17@116.76mph. My best with this car is an 11.89@117.86mph. The difference was the weather and track conditions.
