Vintage Drag Race Footage of "The Lemon," the 1960 AHRA National Champion in A/Altered Class

"The Lemon" was a '33 Ford Coupe with an injected Olds engine that competed in the AHRA A/Altered Class in 1959 and 1960, owned and driven by Jerry Ross, founder of the industrial chemical division of HyperKuhl SuperCoolant. The car ran mostly in the low 11's, and in 1960 won the national championship in the A/Altered class at the AHRA Nationals in Kansas City.

Drag Racing - Pacific Raceways 1963

Vintage Drag Racing, 1955 World Series of Drag Racing
Footage of the 1955 World Series of Drag Racing in Lawrenceville, IL. Includes Art Arfons' Green Monster 2, a 20 foot long, six wheeled car powered by a 2000 horsepower Allison aircraft engine. It was hitting 100 miles per hour in the quarter mile at this event. Green Monster Number 2 was painted by Arfons' mother to resemble the World War II Curtiss P-40 Flying Tigers fighter airplane, with an open mouth showing large teeth. The top speed of the car was estimated at 270 miles per hour, and it could reach 140 miles per hour in eight seconds from a standing start. Running on passenger car tires, the car required four wheels on the rear drive axle to withstand the power. At the World Series of Drag Racing in Lawrenceville, Illinois, it clocked the highest top speed at 132.35 mph, and eventually went on to a world record of 145.16 mph.

Doug Kerhulas' last drag race-National Trail 1984
Kerhulas' meeting with the NHRA's ill conceived aircraft style arresting nets caused a closed head injury which ended his career. As Kerhulas' head was thrust forward from the quick slowdown the metal cables from the top of the net rebounded and hit him in the helmet at a very high speed. He was a second round winner in the race. This was Doug's last race as noted in National Dragster Magazine, cutting short a rising career. He recovered fully from his injuries.

The Gasser Wars At Indy
Pictures and movies that I took at the US Nationals at Indianapolis Raceway Park in the late 60s. The three pictures that are not mine, at 4:30, 4:35, and 5:13, are from gassermadness.com. Check it out, it's an awesome site! For the soundtrack, I'm jammin' on "Shakin All Over", a song originally written and recorded by the British group Johnny Kidd and the Pirates in 1960 and covered by dozens of other groups over the years. Thanks for watching!
