Frank Profera has spent six years making his Lotus go faster, stop shorter, and corner harder.
Though it only has to move around 2,150 lbs, Frank's Lotus makes 680 wheel
horsepower with a
twin-charged 1.8L engine; giving it a better power-to-weight ratio than
Mario Andretti's Formula One Lotus. It's an ongoing project that may never
be finished, because of Frank's never-ending obsession with speed. We had
to take it for a ride.

1981 Lotus Turbo Esprit - part 2
My first proper drive in the '81 turbo
Esprit. Being an early dry-sump car this was Lotus's first turbocharged road car and also the last road car
Colin Chapman was involved with.
Back in 1981 this car would have cost more than the Ferrari 308 of the day.
That seems pretty audacious now but I think the turbo Esprit was far ahead of its time. 33 years
later it's still fantastic to drive. I was expecting it to show its age
more to be honest. Steering is heavy at parking speeds but once on the move
the car is much more delicate and precise than, say, a Lamborghini Countach
which is quite a workout! All the controls are slick and evenly weighted
and this must surely be the nicest gearbox fitted to an Esprit.
The 910 engine is incredible for Lotus's first go at turbocharging. There isn't much torque low in the
rev range but unlike other contempory turbos there is very little lag, just a linear
swell of power as the revs rise. Unlike an Audi Quattro (which came out a
few years later) that had huge lag before a great surge in the mid-range
and then quickly ran out of puff at 5500rpm. The Lotus keeps pulling hard
beyond 6000rpm, in fact it's only getting into its stride at 5000rpm. It's
very smooth for a 4 cylinder engine too, there's none of the coarse,
thrashiness you get from the Sierra Cosworth engine and that was still 6
years away when the turbo Esprit was
launched. You'd be doing well to find a modern 4 cylinder that is this
smooth today. Overall it's quieter than I was expecting given this has no
cats, my Exige is definitely louder.
Inside there's comfort and luxury that an Exige owner like me is unfamiliar
with. The seats are as comfortable as they look. They are fixed back on
early cars like this but give you a laid back driving position to eat up
the miles in. It really feels like a car you could do long journeys in. The
pedal box is very tight, they expanded it for later cars and now I know
why. But its very snug in there, similar to a modern Exige in terms of
The brakes feel the most dated part of the package so this is an area to
consider modernising to some degree. However the handling is the thing that
really stands out. In 1981 if you threw a fast car at a corner you just
hung on and hoped for the best. The Countach, Boxer and Aston Martin
Vantage were grand tourers really, never b-road hooligans. The 911 turbo in 1981 was a total widow-maker too. This
car must have been a complete revelation back then.
Was this the first supercar that actually handled? It feels secure,
responsive and inspires confidence in a way I couldn't have imagined was
possible for a car with 65 section (and very old!) tyres. With more modern
rubber you really attack some corners if you wanted.
A fantastic and still largely under-rated car.
