Although the Clymer staff wasn't along for the ride, we did sponsor Sjaak Lucassen on his 5 year adventure to travel around the world on an unlikely motorcycle: a 2001 Yamaha R1. To make the motorcycle a serious adventure touring bike that could compete with well known motorcycles in the class including the BMW GS models and the Kawasaki KLR, the Yamaha R1 received extensive modifications including: r1 forum adapted and strengthened sub frame to attach the top and two side trunks: placed an aluminum box in the space below the tank for a spare chain; placed a small rack on the steering stem to store the GPS; Van Wylick strengthened the aluminum stay fairing on both sides with 3 mm thick aluminum plates; joined the mirror supports underneath the fairing screen with a thick strip of aluminum to prevent vibration from breaking them; installed modified (5 cm shorter) Laser Exhaust pipe so the Exhaust wont blow against the spare Metzeler tires; installed a Cyclelok alarm with trunk protection; installed a Hyperpro steering damper; use fully synthetic Putoline oil; installed K&N air filter; installed Osco chain oiler; installed Fuelstar between the fuel pipe so lower octane fuel can be used; placed a 12 volt adapter to charge the video camera and laptop batteries; installed an on/off switch between the supply of the right headlight to save current and still drive with one light on; installed a relay for the extra brake lights in the side trunks; and of course there was a Clymer shop service repair manual book (not a free download pdf) for all maintenance troubleshooting repair. 1978 Kawasaki KZ1000 Kerker 4 into 1
Shot in April 2006. I decided to upload this just for folks who love the sound of the most beautiful bike on earth, the classic z1/KZ with a kerker pipe and no baffle. The ole man didn't know he was going to be taped so just enjoy the clip if you love the sound of old KAW's. This was the morning after we bought it on a 10hr round trip to north Florida to pick it up. Five minutes before shooting this clip, we pulled the baffle and started the bike for the first time that morning. He's just making some adjustments and getting an idea of what condition the bike was in. Also...the bike came with some junk pod filters on it and we don't know what the carbs were jetted at. Ok enough talk...

Continuation of balancing the carburetors using the Morgan CarbTune on a KZ900. The 1973-1975 Z1 and the 1977 to 1980 KZ1000 should be similar. The Z1's use a set screw to the side of the carburetor.
