► Audi Sport quattro laserlight concept unveiled at CES 2014

In the dual headlights, a typical quattro feature, Audi is demonstrating the future of lighting technology by combining matrix LED and laser light technologies. Two low-profile trapezoidal elements are visible within the headlights -- the outer one generates the low beam light using matrix LEDs and an aperture mask, while the inner element produces laser light for high-beam functionality. The powerful laser diodes are significantly smaller than LED diodes; they are only a few microns in diameter. Illuminating the road for a distance of nearly 500 meters (1,640 ft), the laser high-beam light has approximately twice the lighting range and three times the luminosity of LED high beam lights. In this future technology, Audi is once again demonstrating its leadership role in automotive lighting technology with a system that will also be used on the race track in the 2014 R18 e-tron quattro. The plug-in hybrid drive gives the Audi Sport quattro laserlight concept fascinating dynamic performance. Its system output is 515 kW (700 hp), and its system torque is 800 Nm (590.05 lb-ft). Power flows via a modified eight-speed tiptronic to the quattro drivetrain, which features a sport differential at the rear axle. The show car's combined fuel consumption, based on the applicable fuel economy standard, is just 2.5 liters of fuel per 100 km (94.09 US mpg) -- which equates to CO2 emissions of 59 g/km (94.95 g/mile). The combustion engine is a four-liter V8 with biturbo charging; it produces 412 kW (560 hp) of power and 700 Nm (516.29 lb-ft) of torque. The cylinder on demand (COD) system, which deactivates four cylinders under part load and a start-stop system make the sonorous eight-cylinder engine very efficient. Located between the 4.0 TFSI and the transmission is a disc-shaped electric motor that produces 110 kW and 400 Nm (295.02 lb-ft). It draws its drive energy from a lithium-ion battery at the rear, which stores 14.1 kWh of energy -- enough for up to 50 km (31.07 miles) of all-electric driving. World Premiere 2015 Lexus RC F (NAIAS 2014)
The hood is higher than that of the RC to accommodate the larger V8 engine and create the powerful flared profile suited to an F model. Ducts beneath the front bumper, fenders, and strategically-placed aerodynamic stabilizing fins create a stance which further identifies the F model. Air outlets at the rear of the front fender form the shape of an L when they merge with side sill extensions, while stacked trapezoidal quad-outlet tailpipes at the rear add further aggression. Taking design cues from the Lexus LFA supercar, the RC F features an available speed-sensitive active rear spoiler. It enhances the coupe's lines at standstill and deploys from the RC F's deck at approximately 50 mph and retracts when the speed is less than 25 mph. The wing helps the RC F maintain traction and stability at higher speeds. In this video you can see the original car from Geneva 2013 driving around, parking on its later display spot and stopping the engine via remote control. In my opinion, it looks pretty cool, I especially like the chrome finished wheels and the LED light designs in the front and in the rear of the car. In the end of the video, you can see a Lamborghini Aventador LP720-4 50 Anniversarion Roadster, a Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse Lang Lang Edition and the all-new Porsche 911 (991) turbo. But LEDs are becoming ubiquitous, and the tech has even begun to trickle into economy cars. Then there was the gauntlet thrown down by BMW a few years back, in which that other German company decided it was going to leapfrog LEDs and work on laser headlights. We know what you're thinking at this point: oh, snap! Well, Audi's not taking BMW's threat lying down, and is bringing a laser-headlight-equipped version of its Sport Quattro concept to the 2014 Consumer Electronics show to prove it. The Sport Quattro Laser Light concept you see here wears four laser-lit peepers. Audi claims its headlights—which are powered by laser diodes, not just pure laser beams—boast a 1640-foot range, which is twice the distance LED high beams can throw light. The laser diodes also are about three times as bright as LED high beams, and each diode measures just a few micrometers in diameter. Actually, on the Sport Quattro, Audi has mixed the laser lighting with its matrix LED tech—probably to continue showing off this trick technology's auto-highbeam capabilities. And although this is Audi's first crack at laser-lit headlights, the company did put a laser rear fog light on the A2 concept a few years back. As for the Sport Quattro Laser Light concept Audi fitted its laser diodes to, it is an adaptation of the Sport Quattro concept shown at this year's Frankfurt auto show. Here, it's painted a rich hue of red, although it appears Audi kept the car's 700-hp hybrid powertrain intact. There's a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 mated to an electric motor and an eight-speed automatic transmission driving all four wheels. At the rear there's a torque-vectoring sport differential, and the V-8 gets an engine stop-start system and cylinder deactivation. Thanks to a 14.1-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, the Sport Quattro concept can whir around for up to 31 miles on electrons alone, while at the other end of the spectrum, it can do 190 mph and hit 62 mph in 3.7 seconds. We don't much care which comes first, laser lights or this 700-hp hybrid, but we'd like to see them soon. Unfortunately, the lights likely are several years away from production. BMW is launching its long-awaited first mass-produced electric model: the i3. It is the first car from a new series, designed to appeal to a new target group. The i3 has a theoretical range of around 150-160 kilometers, but in real life 120-130 seems more manageable. The car can also be equipped with an optional petrol range extender. However unlike most other electric cars, BMW i3 is fast and relatively fun to drive on European roads. It might not be the Isetta everyone thought it would be, but this could be the future of mobility.
