On this episode of Roadkill, we hack the entire body off a C4 Corvette, cage it, and call it a race car! Freiburger and Finnegan fulfill a dream that began four-plus years ago when they first wrote the "Vette Hack" article for HOT ROD magazine, slicing 900 pounds of ugly fiberglass off of a 1985 Corvette to prove that it would handle better in the autocross. Less weight means more acceleration, better cornering, and better stopping. The idea is proven once again here as the guys add a 350-horsepower rat-rod engine, rebuild the trans, remove more weight, and make it rigid, safe, and stylish with a full rollcage. Next, they head into a shootout with a 2014 Corvette upgraded by Lingenfelter Performance Engineering with an Edelbrock blower, Kooks headers, and Corsa Exhaust for a wicked-sounding 640 horsepower. We have that, the GTR. But imagine if there was a car with the beauty, aggression and emotion of the italian kings still at this same price point. We present you the Z06, the best car under $100,000… (sick acceleration shot here) The performance of this car isn’t just impressive. It’s absolutely staggering. The grip, the noise, the thrust. It makes you ask yourself, how could you possibly improve this. How can Chevy make the next gen ZR1 better than this. Sure it might be mid engined and have a bit more power. But this is it ladies and gentlemen, this is the pinnacle of street car performance. We drove the C7 Stingray nearly a year ago. It was brilliant on all fronts. I left the review muttering to myself in a schizophrenic stupor: I need it, I need to buy one right now, this is it, i love it. Today we revisit that remarkable machine but with 200 more hp, carbon aero and a full tank of gas. (more Exhaust clips) The old LS7 in the C6 Z06 with only 505 hp is gone. Its replacement? The mammoth 6.2 L LT4 supercharged v8. The power? 650 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque. Here is a list of cars that the Z06 is more powerful than: Ferrari 458, Lamborghini Huracan, McLaren 650S, Porsche turbo S, the average price of those four cars? over $230k. At a base price of $79k the corvette costs three times less. Ridiculous amounts of power is irrelevant if you are unable to apply it to the tarmac. The normal Z06 comes with Pilot Super sport tires, opting for the Z07 package brings insane pilot sport cup 2 tires. With the kind of speed this car can generate, you need powerful brakes. Base cars have huge steel brakes, while Z07 cars come with carbon ceramics. Chevy gives you two transmission options, the 7 speed manual or the 8 speed auto. The automatic is faster meaning 0-60 happens in a blistering 2.95 seconds and the quarter mile in under 11. And unlike the previous gen ZR1, it isn't absolutely terrifying to drive. The new Z06 is now packed with technology. There is a drive mode selector dial, which allows you to pick between weather, eco, tour, sport, and track. Everyone close their eyes and give a moment of silence for the engineers at Chevy who created the Exhaust on the z06. (pause...and then insane Exhaust) The handling; marvelous. The steering is extremely direct and actually a bit lighter than you’d expect on a supercar. It’s easy to drive, not all the intimidating and feels like an extension of your brain onto the road. It darts back and forth like a cat chasing a laser pointer. The Z06 comes standard with GM’s heavenly magnetic ride suspension. The fluid in the dampers is filled with tiny magnetic particles, this magnetorheological fluid, while not only being really difficult to say, allows for endless control of the suspension stiffness. The suspension is constantly adjusting itself every 10-15 milliseconds. meaning you get a perfect handling, without sacrificing a silky smooth ride. The interior of the C6 vettes were not awe inspiring to say the least. But the new C7, especially with this carbon trim is stunning. There are no excuses. The Vette isnt faster than your ferrari because its made of plastic and the interior is a heaping pile of shit . It’s faster than your ferrari because ‘merica that's why. This might be THE most fun car I’ve ever driven. It is amazing to think that a few short years ago during the automotive crisis, the corvette was at risk of being eliminated.
