The engine which is the most important part of the Passat TDI is a turbocharged and direct injected diesel four cylinder that displaces 2.0 liters. Power output is 140 horsepower and an incredible 236 lb-ft. of torque. You can choose between a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed DSG automatic transmission with Tiptronic and Sport mode. The manual transmission model gets an estimated 31 MPG in the city and 43 MPG on the highway, while the DSG version gets 30 MPG in the city and 40 MPG on the highway.
On the inside, the Passat TDI benefits from one of the most spacious interiors in the mid-size sedan segment. In fact the rear passengers are treated to three feet of legroom which make the Passat best in class. German car manufacturers are known for producing high end luxury vehicles. Volkswagen also owns Audi and Bentley among others so know that some of the technologies and luxury features found on those automobiles have made their way down to the Volkswagen line. When you step up to the higher trim levels you are rewarded with better materials and trim pieces. Heated seats and a great Fender 400 watt stereo system are available as options.
Technology wise the 2012 Volkswagen Passat TDI has a bunch of great interior features as well as advanced safety systems. Bluetooth technology allows the drive to make phone calls hands-free. There are controls on the steering wheel that control the stereo as well as the Bluetooth. Finally rounding out the interior technology is an advanced touch screen navigation system that is available as an option.
The Volkswagen Passat was named to the IIHS List of Top Safety Picks for 2012. Beside a sophisticated airbag system, the Passat has a crash-optimized front end which helps to absorb the forces involved in an accident. Electronic Stability Control works to keep the car on the road and the driver in control.
The 2012 Volkswagen Passat is one of the many vehicles in the mid-size sedan segment. But the Passat manages to get wonderful fuel economy while providing a safe and comfortable ride at an affordable price.

The new midsized sedan sports a very attractive exterior package while at the same time remaining low-key. There are 27 different trim configurations for the 2012 Volkswagen Passat that include many different engine, transmission, and features package choices. The very base model Passat is a 2.5 liter with a 5-speed manual transmission that starts at $19,995 with the 3.6 liter SEL Premium seen here costing $32,950.
There are actually 4 different engines offered on the 2012 Volkswagen Passat. A base 2.5 liter engine, a turbocharged 2.0 liter engine, a turbo-diesel 2.0 liter engine, and the 3.6 VR6 engine found here on the SEL trim. This motor is a 3.6 liter V-6 engine that pushed out 280 horsepower and 258 lb-ft. of torque. The 6-speed automatic transmission features paddle shifters located behind the steering wheel. Fuel economy for the Passat SEL is 20 MPG in the city and 28 MPG on the highway.
On the inside the Passat has more than enough room for 5 passengers. This car fits into the mid-sized segment but it seems there is plenty of space for not only the passengers up front but for those in the rear of the vehicle. The materials and wood trim make you feel like you are in a premium luxury car. The 2012 Volkswagen Passat comes with Bluetooth technology, there is a Premium Fender Audio System available, and touch screen navigation is also an feature that can be added on. The SEL model comes standard with all of this.
The mid-sized car segment is full of tough competition including the Hyundai Sonata, Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima, and more. But Volkswagen has created a vehicle in the Passat that will appeal to a broad range of car buyers. At every price point there is a Passat that will make somebody happy.
