2010 Formula Drift Round 3 - Falken Takes 1st and 2nd at New Jersey

FONTANA, CA -- Team Falken's Daijiro Yoshihara scored his second victory in a row at Round 3 of the Formula Drift Championship in New Jersey. Dubbed "The Gauntlet", Wall Speedway is known for its unforgiving course layout and harsh banked turn to in-field transition. For Falken, although a repeat of 2009's Wall podium sweep was just narrowly missed, a Déjà Vu top 2 finish from this year's Round 2 at Road Atlanta set Yoshihara and Vaughn Gittin Jr. once again on top of the podium with very close one, two finish. Vaughn in the ASD built Monster Energy / Falken Tire 2011 Ford Mustang continues to lead the series followed by Dai in his Discount Tire / Falken Tire Nissan Silvia S13 built by SPD Metalworks. Darren "D-Mac" McNamara fought hard for third position but that achievement was cut short by two time Formula D Champion, Tanner Foust. The only feat more astonishing than the battle with Foust was the fact that the vehicle even made it to the starting line! During Top 4 competition running against Yoshihara, Darren drifted off line and made contact with the immoveable guardrail causing damage that required major suspension component replacement both front and rear. "I've never seen this team work harder" said Jonathon Bradford, Falken's Drift Team Supervisor. "Every hand available was frantically helping to get the Sky back on track. It was a team effort like I've never seen." Other notable accomplishments include Justin Pawlak's 4th place qualifying and Top 8 finish, Ross Petty's 6th place qualifying and Top 16 finish and Tyler McQuarrie's door-to-door battle with current championship points leader and Falken team mate, Vaughn Gittin Jr. during the Top 16 rounds. "It's always hard when two of our team members are going head to head but we always tell our drivers, may the best man win" declared Andrew Hoit, Falken's Director of Marketing. So far, Team Falken has claimed back-to-back first and second place finishes and five podiums in three events, including all three wins. "This season is still far from over, but our team's determination is at an all time high" said Nick Fousekis, Falken's Sr. Consumer Marketing Manager. "Couple focus and perseverance with world-class partners/supporters and a product like Falken Tire, and you get a winning combination" Fousekis added. The Azenis RT-615K clad Falken Team continues on to Round 4 of the championship in Monroe, WA July 9-10 at Evergreen Speedway. Additionally, Falken played host to 175 dealer guests who participated in the company's hospitality, as Team Falken's aggressive marketing program, hospitality rig and factory support trailer were in full use during the two-day event.

2010 24H of Nürburgring - Falken Tyre Takes 3rd in Class
Nürburg, Germany -- With nearly 250 cars participating in the annual 24 Hours of Nürburgring (officially the ADAC 24h Rennen Nürburgring), Falken Tire, an international force within the high performance tire category, took third place in its class and finished 12th overall. The Nissan 350Z (Z33; official designation: Version NISMO Type 380RS-Competition) was entered by Falken Motorsports Japan, and was driven by the same quartet of drivers who have represented Falken for the past four years -- veterans Peter Dumbreck, Dirk Schoysma, Tetsuya Tanaka and Kazuki Hoshino. The 24 Hours of Nürburgring is a touring car and GT endurance event on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. With a lap length of more than 15.5 mi, it is a grueling event, though it attracts multiple factory entries and over 700 drivers. Falken competes in motorsports events throughout the world, running race versions of its street tires with factory and privateer entries to great success. The team of Falken drivers produced a strong performance, finishing further up the leader board than the 2009 race, while competing against an increased number of manufacturer entries, including a Porsche 911 GT3 Hybrid, which outlasted many entries on fuel runs. While cold weather plagued the teams throughout the event, Falken Motorsports' spirited Nissan, running on Falken Azenis, withstood the elements and survived without serious mechanical gremlins, which plagued a number of other teams.

Final Fight at 2010 Formula Drift Irwindale
FONTANA, CA -- After finishing second in the "Title Fight" at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale, CA, Formula Drift's final event of the year, Team Falken's Vaughn Gittin Jr., driver of the Monster Energy/Falken Tire 2011 Ford Mustang, became the Formula D Champion of the 2010 season.

It was the 11th podium finish for Team Falken in seven Formula D races, a season in which the tire company's factory-supported teams dominated all year long. Falken placed first in five of the seven events.

Three Team Falken drivers were in the top five in the final standings. Total points between the top five drivers were close, but Gittin Jr. was clearly the favorite after taking two wins in the six races leading up to the Title Fight. He finished the season with 632 points. Irwindale winner Tanner Foust eventually finished second in the standings at 568.5, and Team Falken Driver Daijiro Yoshihara ended up fourth overall, just one point behind third place Ryan Tuerck. Team Falken Driver Darren McNamara took fifth. "This was Jr.'s year plain and simple, said Jonathan Bradford, Falken's Drift Team Supervisor. "There is a lot to be said about finishing on the podium six out of seven events this year. It was a pleasure to be involved with a team that left everything on the track and drove with an all-in attitude. We have successfully rewritten the record books and I would like to personally thank the fans that rooted for Falken throughout this unbelievable season." "Our team's success would not be possible without the support, hard work and dedication of our two fabrication/engineering facilities, Autosport Dynamics (ASD) in Charlotte, NC and SPD Metalworks in Anaheim, CA," added Nick Fousekis, Senior Manager, Consumer Marketing. "I'd also like to thank all of the sponsors, including our newest, Monster Energy, for their faith in Falken's program. Last but certainly not least, we thank the fans of drifting. Without you, the sport would not have grown into that it is today." The Irwindale event started off well, as Falken's Darren McNamara qualified first, followed by Yoshihara in third. Gittin Jr. was sixth. Both McNamara and Gittin Jr. made it to the Top 4, but McNamara lost a chance to take a podium when he spun out in the battle for third place. "On behalf of everyone at Falken Tire, we wish to express our best wishes to Vaughn," said Andrew Hoit, Falken Director of Marketing. "This was a great season for Falken, and we entertained close to 500 guests over the weekend at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale. I'd also like to salute the efforts of our other team members: Dai Yoshihara; Darren McNamara; Tyler McQuarrie [who finished 8th in the standings]; and Justin Pawlak [who finished 11th]; as well as our privateers, all of whom, like the factory teams, competed on Falken Azenis RT-615K tires: Fredric Aasbo [13th]; Ross Petty [19th]; "Mad" Mike Whiddett [21st]; James Deane [24th]; and Dean Kearney, who came from Ireland. Their participation successfully enhanced our overall effort, and we'll all join the celebration."

Drifting takes competitive motorsports to the extreme, and has successfully attracted strong crowds, loyal fans and car enthusiasts from all walks of life. Falken quickly realized how popular and demanding this format would become, and since 2003, has been a solid fixture within the sport. The focus is on skill and precision driving, as competitors in specially prepared, high-powered vehicles intentionally execute controlled sideways slides at high speeds through a marked course.

Team Falken Tire at Formula D Round 2 Atlanta
ATLANTA, GA Round 2 of the 2009 Formula Drift season saw Team Falken Tiress Darren McNamara, running his Sears Auto Center Saturn Sky on the proving grounds of legendary Road Atlanta, advance to the finals against Chris Forsberg where he took second place overall. The finals proved challenging after the first competitive run was deemed too close and a subsequent run requested by the judges and known among the Formula D competitors and fans as a One More Time ended with paint trading and McNamara in second. Team Falken brought its full line-up of five factory-supported competitors to Road Atlanta, and as the teams continue to refine the four new cars built for this years race season, several unexpected problems plagued two of the entrants. In practice, Calvin Wan, driving the Nissan S15 Silvia, suffered a broken axle, and then broke a rear spindle in the next session. The loss of practice time was something from which he couldnt recover. Wan qualified 32nd and lost in the next round. Tyler McQuarrie, running the heavily modified Nissan 350Z Convertible, experienced a cam sensor failure, missing the final practice while waiting for a replacement part. Nevertheless, cooperation is always a part of the game, and McQuarrie borrowed a sensor from Falken teammate McNamara and qualified 13th with a single run. McQuarrie ultimately advanced to the Great 8. The mechanical dramas behind them, Team Falken continued to press forward. Perennial fan favorite Vaughn Gittin, Jr., qualified 8th in his 2010 Ford Mustang GT, moving to the top 16 before being knocked out. And Daijiro Yoshihara qualified the Discount Tires Lexus IS350 in 2nd place, but lost in the first round after a One More Time. We are starting to show our competitive strength, stated Steve Mitchell, Team Falkens Motorsports Manager. The mechanical problems set us back a bit, and well make sure to stock more parts for our next round, but teamwork prevailed and we were able to overcome some of the early struggles. Im proud of Darrens efforts, as I am of all our team members, and well see more of our drivers advance to the finals in the events ahead. Privateers competing on Falken Tires included Taka Aono and Ross Petty who both qualified in the top 32. Team Falkens marketing effort, hospitality rig and factory support trailer will continue on to the next round. Team Falken will compete at The Gauntlet, at Wall Speedway in New Jersey, June 5-6. The speedway, located in Wall Township, has been in existence since 1950, and was recently renovated. The specially designed Gauntlet track will provide drift fans with an exciting show on the inner oval.
