Meeting Charles Morgan was an utter delight, you see I've had the dubious
pleasure of meeting hundreds of motor industry executives over the years.
Engineers, designers, marketing peeps and, of course, PRs have all shared a
dinner and/or a cheeky drink after a hard day at a motor show or launch.
It's rare that (PRs aside) I find myself quite so taken with them as I was
with Charles Morgan.
Morgan, who has been involved in the family business since 1985, is a very
well to do sort of chap. Where most would expect a car company boss to be a
stern type, I found a man with a boyish grin and a glint in his eye. Keen
to natter about the industry and Morgan's place in it (often with candour),
I got the impression that despite being born with petrol seeping through
every pore he's ready to take on the world only as a Brit can -- with a
grin and a can do attitude.
His presence on Twitter confirms that he's got a sense of humour -- a bonus
-- but also keeping an eye on the future. While sat in his office (which he
fondly calls 'the sauna' because it's bloody hot) he fondly remembers
conversations with his father about moving the brand into the 20th Century
with a bonded aluminium chassis -- essentially gluing bits of aluminium
together. He was tickled by his fathers negative take on pritt sticking a
car together yet persevered.
Being one of the 'early adopters' of magnesium chassis bonding is a point
of pride for Morgan -- his cars may look ye olde worlde but have the
strongest, most advanced underpinnings available.
When we spoke to Morgan about his own Aeromax his face seemed to light up.
His car, one percent of the world's production run, is his daily driver. He
freely admits to using it for the weekly shop and that he loves the
attention it gets. He knows he's sitting on a thing of beauty and that only
the hardiest of chaps can ignore its beauty.
The Aeromax's story is the one we're telling today, but it's the man behind
it who makes it so special. So, audience, here's to Charles Morgan, he's
the one who sits in his sauna and helps create some of the finest cars in
the world. All the time with a smile on his face. And you can't beat that,

AUSmotive: Allan McNish crash Le Mans 2011 (HD)
Allan McNish in the #3 Audi R18 TDI was involved in a horrific accident in
the 2011 Le Mans 24 hour race. McNish made contact with the #58 Ferrari and
crashed heavily into the barriers just after the Dunlop bridge. Thankfully
he was able to walk away with no major injury.

Audi won the Le Mans 24 Hour race on Sunday despite the loss of two of
their three cars to high-speed crashes.
Two-time winner Allan McNish and team-mate Mike Rockenfeller crashed in
separate incidents on Saturday.
But Andre Lotterer, Marcel Fassler and Benoit Treluyer still clinched a
10th Le Mans title for the German car maker.
They completed 355 laps to beat the Peugeot number nine of Simon Pagenaud,
Pedro Lamy and Sebastien Bourdais by 13.854 seconds.
The previous day McNish and Rockenfeller had both walked away unharmed
after crashing into barriers in spectacular fashion.
Scotsman McNish crashed after his car clipped the front of Anthony
Beltoise's Ferrari and went slewing across the track.
Rockenfeller touched a backmarker as he attempted to overtake and speared
into the barriers.
The accident occured between Mulsanne and Indianapolis but witnesses on
Twitter reported that the German - who was a winner of this race a year ago
- walked away from the crash to receive medical attention.
