The Mileage Maker I6 was bumped up to 223 CID (3.7 L) for 120 hp (89 kW) and the new-for-1954 Y-block V8 was now offered in two sizes: Standard Fords used a 272 CID (4.5 L) version with 162 hp (121 kW) with 2-barrel carburetor and single Exhaust or 182 hp with 4-barrel carburetor and dual Exhaust, but the large 292 CID (4.8 L) unit from the Thunderbird was also offered, boasting 193 hp (144 kW). Apart from the engine changes, customers were sure to notice the new Fairlane, which replaced the Crestline as the top trim level, while a new Crown Victoria-style featured a chrome "basket handle" across the familiar (and continued) "Victoria" hardtop roof, which originally appeared on the Mercury XM-800 concept car. This use of a styling feature to visually separate the front of the passenger compartment from the rear reappeared on the 1977-1979 Ford Thunderbird, the Ford Fairmont Futura and Mercury Zephyr Z-7 coupes. The company now boasted three different rooflines, the tall two-pillar Mainline, Customline, and Fairlane, lower chrome-pillar Crown Victoria, and pillarless hardtop Victoria. The "Skyliner" acrylic glass roof was still offered, this time only on the Crown Victoria model. New brakes were used 11-inch (280 mm) drums. Also, Fords had a new frame with five cross members. The Fords introduced for 1955 also featured the panoramic windshields found on Oldsmobiles, Buicks and Cadillacs the previous year. With this panoramic windshield the A-pillars have a vertical angle. this gives the driver more panoramic visibility. For the first time, Ford offered seat belts as a dealer option (not factory installed, with instructions provided by a Service Bulletin). Also new for 1955 was Ford's first factory installed air conditioner. This "Select Aire" option featured an integrated heater core and evaporator coil unit within the dash and cold air discharge vents located on top of the dash on either side of the radio speaker. The "Select Aire" design was carried over to the 1956 models with slightly different cold air vents in the same location as on the 1955 models. The condenser was mounted in front of the radiator as in later cars. Station wagons were offered as a separate series for the first time in 1955. The Ranch Wagon and Custom Ranch Wagon were 2 door wagons whilst the Country Sedan and Country Squire models were 4 doors wagons, the latter featuring wooden appliqué side mouldings. 1956 The eggcrate grille featured on the 1955 cars was widened into a series of rectangles for 1956, but this subtle exterior change was nothing compared to Ford's adoption of a 12-volt electrical system across the line. The Crown Victoria Skyliner's sales were plummeting with just 603 made, and it would be replaced by a convertible the next year. A new addition at midyear was the "Town Victoria" 4-door hardtop model which, along with the new Customline 2-door hardtop, were meant to compete with the Chevrolet Bel Air. The Parklane, a Fairlane trimmed Tudor station wagon, was added to compete with the Chevrolet Nomad. Idiot lights for oil pressure and ammerter were standard. The Lifeguard safety package — consisting of seat belts, a padded dashboard, a deep-dish steering wheel, and a breakaway rearview mirror — was introduced. The option was a slow-seller. The optional air conditioner, which remained expensive and thus a slow seller, was totally revamped; the compressor was now housed beneath the hood and the cooling vents were moved to atop the dashboard(it could not be ordered on the Thunderbird). The 1955 Ford was also produced by Ford Australia...

MOTOR SIZE CORRECTION Any time we get stunning 50's era Detroit metal into our Vanguard Motor Sales showroom, it tends to attract a lot of attention and usually doesn't stick around very long. This 1955 Ford Fairlane Crown has been painstakingly restored to its top of the Ford line status. It's the perfect car for anyone who wants an exceptionally well done restoration for half the price of doing it themselves. This car takes everything that was great about the first generation Fairlane and wraps it in outstanding workmanship. From top to bottom, the body of this car is as straight as when it rolled out of the factory. Dressed in two-tone red and white, the cars paint features an excellent shine with no major flaws or damage. The red and white color scheme gives the car a classic feeling. Panel gaps are just how you would expect, the door lips and jambs are clean and rust free. We were stunned by the quality of the stainless trim on this car, it is truly exceptional. Both the front and rear chrome bumpers are beautiful as well. A hood mounted Ford emblem and "Fairlane" script are centered on the hood and line up perfectly with the hood ornament. The now famous 'Fairlane strip' flows down the side of the car, and the great looking Ford emblems with "Crown Victoria" badges are centered on each door. Ahead of the front fender openings, V8 emblems announce the presence of a Ford Y block. The Crown Victoria exclusive chrome 'basket handle' roof piece and stainless window trim is in truly awesome condition. On the right side of the trunk a "Ford-O-Matic" script announces the presence of a hydraulic transmission. As the body tag reads, this Fairlane is a top of the line car that features an excellent running correct 312 Y-block V8. You can see the "Thunderbird" polished valve covers, aluminum intake, custom made ceramic powder coated headers by Red's Headers, an Edelbrock carb and the gorgeous air cleaner. The heater blower motor and duct work have been restored. In front of the engine the generator and cooling fan sit right behind a correct gloss black radiator. Power steering and power front disc brakes are also included. The frame and underside of the car are solid! There have been a few repairs to the floor boards and rocker on the driver side, but the passenger side has been untouched. Any repairs that were done, were done beautifully. The original rear end is present along with 2 inch lowering blocks. The 2 inch aluminum dual Exhaust and Smithy mufflers sound awesome. Behind the oil pan sits the hydraulic Ford -O-Matic 2-speed transmission. The rear drum brakes appear to be in excellent condition. Inside this classy and comfortable interior, the two tone seats have been excellently done. A new headliner is tight across the roof and features the bottom side of the Crown Victoria 'basket handle'. In front of you, a perfectly restored dash houses the speedometer, fuel and temperature gauges, warning lights and a gear selector window. In the center of the dash you'll find a clock, and a unique AM radio. Updates include a 1956 Ford steering column and the steering wheel, complete with chrome horn ring. The restored trunk features a new mat. This is an exceptionally clean '55 Fairlane that has been restored to a high level of detail and carefully maintained. If you wanted to restore a car to this level on your own, you'd be well into the 6 figure range and probably sink years into the project. Beautiful, solid, well done cars like this don't come along too often and given the attention it draws in our showroom, I expect it to be rolling out the door before too long. This is one beautiful piece of American history. The car's reliable flathead V8 engine looks good and runs great. Its engine bay is nicely painted, from the inner fenders, to the firewall and the underside of the hood. The very original motor compartment includes all of the heat components including the heater motor, duct work and lines. The hydraulic pump for the power top works great, and is very rare to find in these cars. You will also find the 6 volt battery and generator. The rebuilt radiator has been re-cored as well. This is one original '50 Ford under the hood, and just beautiful! Take one look underneath this stunning drop top and you'll find a solid X-frame undercarriage which has been properly maintained for the last 62 years. The underside of the vehicle has been undercoated. There is no rust to be found under here. The rockers are solid, showing no patch work. Motivation is provided by a sturdy 3-on-the-Tree transmission. This is a very original undercarriage, including the Exhaust, rear end and drum brakes. Newer brake lines and Glass Pack mufflers can be found out back. The front suspension has been nicely painted, and the bushings are in good shape. The bottom of this Crestliner presents very well with solid floors, a straight frame that shows no indication of damage, and a slew of road ready parts that all function just as they should. Pop this cool convertible's doors and you'll find a tasteful and comfortable custom interior. In front of the driver is the beautiful steering wheel and central speedometer/gauge combination. Starting at the left side of that speedo, you will find the push button starter, lights and wiper controls. Just underneath the base of the steering wheel are the air and blower controls. At the right of the gauge cluster is the key hole and choke. The Magic Air system controls are just below the key hole and choke. The control for the power top is next to the parking brake handle. Centered in the dash is an analog clock and AM radio, and to the right is the locking glove box. The carpet and upholstery are in great condition as well. Out back is a nicely restored trunk with a large storage area and spare tire. This is a convertible made for cruisin'! This exceptionally clean 1950 Ford Crestliner is one of the coolest cruisers on the planet! It is a unique hot rod that sets itself apart from the sea of restored 'tri-fives' and full-size land yachts.
