Disappointed by the poor results of the 917 in 1969, Porsche decided to find a solution that could have improved the car for the next 1970 racing season. The answer was to "cut the tail" of the car. So they put in the name of the car the letter "K", in order to underline the distinctive feature of the new 917 ( K stay for "kurzheck" which means "short"). The car was been equipped with a new 4.9 liters flat-12 engine (the previous was 4.5 liters) which permitted the car to reach a power of about 600 - 620 bhp and a top speed of 390 km/h (240 mph). This Porsche 917-025 was built for Porsche AG as a long-tail version. In 1970 was converted into a 917 "K" (K stay for Kurzheck, "short" in german), painted in white with blue stripes and sold to Team Zitro, from Switzerland. The car is moved by a 4.5 liter Flat-12 engine which can produce 580hp at 8300 rpm and it's able to reach a top speed over 350 km/h (220 mph). The inertia starter " Schwungmasse " works by rotating a heavy mass at speed, once it reaches 60rpm a lever is pulled below the hand cranking arm, this pushes the drive pinion onto the fly wheel, making the engine rotate and start. The Blitzen-Benz was purpose built to do just one thing, to break speed records (not racing), and it did repeatedly from 1909 through 1911. (Edited version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ga2HtUHzUuw ) Its speed of 228.1km/h (141.73mph) on April 23rd, 1911, driven by Bob Burman at Daytona Beach, stood as a record until 1919. Twice the speed of the fastest airplane, (12 April, 1911, Alfred Leblanc @ 69.442mph/111.801kph in a Blériot Blériot) and even shattering the record speed of 210km/h set by a locomotive in 1903. This record was not even officially broken in an airplane until 1920! Of the six originally built, this is one of only two that exist today, and is displayed at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany. While the extended and nuanced effort required to start the Blitzen-Benz on a cool coastal morning can try the patience of some viewers, its historical significance and ground-breaking engineering brilliance still place it amongst the greatest motor-vehicle achievements of all time, and the dozens witnessing this effort felt it was one of the highlights of many great moments at Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance 2011. A Le Mans' Hero: Porsche 917 - PURE RACECAR SOUNDS
When you think about racecars and Le Mans, you probably think about this: the Porsche 917. You used to see this monster in videogames but in my video you can finally see how it looks like in real world! I'm proud to host on my channel this proper Le Mans hero, a Porsche 917/k to be precise. Auto Union and Mercedes W165 engine starts, LOUD!
Goodwood Festival of Speed FOS 2011, Auto Union Type C & D and Mercedes W165 engine starts. Awesome sounds, very loud! Auto Union drivers: Nick Mason and Hans-Joachim Stuck. Mercedes Silver Arrow W165 Chassis 449547 was the second of the two W165s completed for the 1939 Tripoli Grand Prix. It was considered the slower of the two cars and Lang was sent out in it with an unfavourable strategy. He nevertheless dominated the race and if he had wanted, he could have lapped his 'team leader' in the closing stages. As mentioned the car was only tested and demonstrated after its debut victory. It remained dormant for over fifty years and is still only very rarely seen outside of Stuttgart. Celebrating the 75th anniversary of the 'Silver Arrows,' it is seen here at one of those rare outings, during the 2009 Retromobile in Paris. Auto Union Type C Mercedes-Benz domination in Grand Prix ended with the Auto Union Typ C. It took a few years to get it right, but Ferdinand Porsche's daring design with a mid-mounted V16 finally won. It claimed many victories from 1936 to 1938 until the three-liter formula was laid out for 1939. Horch, Audi, DKW and Wanderer created Auto Union with the help of Ferdinand Porsche and Adolf Rosenberger. Along with building passenger cars, a goal of the new company was to enter Grand Prix. They did so in 1934 with a daring mid-engined race car called the Typ A. This evolved into the slightly larger Typ B the following year and the Typ C was fitted with a much larger engine for 1936. The Type-C was a third evolution of Auto Union's racecar. It primarily competed with Mercedes-Benz but also raced against Alfa Romeo's 12C-36, the Maserati V8RI and Bugatti 59/50. Type-Cs won six victories in 1936 and made Bernt Rosermeyer world champion
