1964 Ford Thunderbird Convertible
The Thunderbird ("T-Bird"), is an automobile manufactured by the Ford Motor
Company in the United States over eleven model generations from 1955
through 2005. When introduced, it created the market niche eventually known
as the personal luxury car.
For 1964 the Thunderbird was restyled in favor of a more squared-off
appearance, which was mostly evident when viewing the car from the side or
rear. Hinting at its roots in the previous generation Thunderbird that it
evolved from, the new model retained a similar grille design with dual
headlights. As before, the new Thunderbird continued to be offered in
hardtop, convertible, and Landau versions.

There are a lot of unique cars out there but look closely at a Thunderbird
and you will be surprised at how many neat features it has. This 1964
Thunderbird is extremely tight and runs incredibly well. These cars had a
look all of there own and really stand out in the crowd. It is coated a
very nice Red that has been buffed out to a great finish. The front end
appearance is very unique and that large chrome grill/bumper has a
beautiful shine. The dual headlights are cleanly mounted in recessed style
coves and are framed in nice polished bezels. To both front fenders are
the original style bullet turn signal indicators and the hood has the
correct scoop and trim. In the rear are the long taillights that work just
as they should. Where most cars have individual bezels for the taillights
these cars utilizes an entirely chromed rear section. Another cool feature
is the rear fender skirts which fit nicely in place and are topped with
Tbird emblems. Nicely chromed mirrors are in place on both sides and are
both easily adjustable. The car has a very solid stance and rolls around
on beautiful Kelsey Hayes wire wheels with Thunderbird knock off style
Giving life to this machine is a 390 V8 that was finished out very nicely.
Chrome looks flashy but there is something very appealing about a motor
done in this way. All of the components are cleanly painted in a factory
style that really pops. Small touches like the decals really make the
difference in giving it that original look. The inner fenders are nicely
painted to match the car with the firewall coated black. Backing this up
is a nice automatic transmission that shifts smoothly with no issues. This
car really is a great driver that runs just as beautifully as it looks.
The interior of the car brings us to a feature every TBird enthusiast is
quick to point out. Nicely in place on the dash is the tilt away steering
column which adjusts to the left and right allowing the driver to easily
hop in and out of place. Not only was this a functional feature it was an
idea thought up by the designers to give the new models something unique to
create a buzz about the car.
The interior upholstery is completed in a two tone Red and White that looks
great. Everything is in gorgeous condition from the trim down to the
smallest knob on the dash. An original style center console is in place
which provides extra storage and houses the Thunderbird AM/FM radio and the
AC/Heat controls. A power top is also in place which easily lowers and
raises the BRAND NEW high quality white cloth top. Make sure to check out
our videos to see the top smoothly raise and lower.

Only 35,000 miles on this beauty! This is one of my favorite cars..very
modern, aircraft inspired interior.
A lounge type rear seat cushion. Nice luxury touches like complete
instrumentation in those binnacles, swing away steering wheel when the car
is placed in Park. Nice console too. A friend had the convertible version
of this car. The venerable 390 c.i., 300 hp engine motivated the car.

In this video I give a full in depth tour of the 1963 Ford Thunderbird
Sport Roadster. I take viewers on a close look through the interior and
exterior of this car while showing details, over viewing of features, and
noting unique styling cues to the vehicle itself. I also show the engine
and the details of it, start it up and see how it sounds under
acceleration. A thorough tour/review of this car designed to give others a
greater overall appreciation of the vehicle.

Beautiful car..this was up for auction at last year's Zephyrhills Florida
show. Interesting paint combination..and you will have to go a long way to
find one with such a nice interior. Notice the swing-away wheel that helped
drivers enter and exit the car. Notice the full gauge assortment in
binnacles that faced the driver. Overhead there are controls too...the
overall atmosphere is that you're in the cockpit of a plane! The
interestingly formed back seat is curved so as to wrap around the sides.

For 1966 the 390-cubic-inch V8's power was increased to 315 bhp (235 kW).
The larger 428-cubic-inch (7.0 L) V-8 became optional, rated at 345 gross
kW) and providing a notable improvement in 0-60 acceleration (to about 9
seconds). A new Town Hardtop model was offered, featured a roof with blind
quarter panels for a more 'formal' look (at the cost of rear visibility).
The Landau model was replaced by the Town Landau, which retained the
previous model's padded roof and landau S-bars, but applied them to the
Town Hardtop's formal roof. The Town Landau was by far the best-selling
model, accounting for 35,105 of the 1966 model's 69,176 sales.
There was a very rare special order 427 available through certain Ford
dealers for 1963-1965 Thunderbirds, 120 of these "high performance" models
were made. Only six are still known to exist today. It is documented that
Bob Tasca, a well known drag racer of the 1960s, ordered a factory-fitted
427 1964 Thunderbird with an export suspension and had custom body work
done by Alexander Bros. Custom Shop in Detroit. The Birds Performance was
said to do 0-60 mph in 6 seconds flat with a top speed of 135 mph (217
km/h). The car's current whereabouts are unknown. There is a link to
another 427 Thunderbird at the bottom of this page.
A black 1964 convertible later had a major role in the TV series
Highlander: The Series as protagonist Duncan Macleods main mode of
transportation. A green 1966 Thunderbird convertible was prominently
featured in the 1991 Ridley Scott film Thelma and Louise, starring Susan
Sarandon and Geena Davis, a red 1966 Thunderbird convertible was featured
in the 1983 film The Outsiders which was directed by Francis Ford Coppola,
and a green 1966 Thunderbird Convertible was featured in the David Lynch
film Wild at Heart, starring Nicholas Cage and Laura Dern.
