Hualingan 4th Gen Multimedia Headunit in my E53 BMW X5
This is a quick video to show some of the features of my Hualingan 4th Gen
Multimedia Headunit that I fitted in my E53 BMW X5. I previously had the
standard CD Player/Stereo fitted so this is a big upgrade!
The 3rd and 4th Gen Hualingan units are far better quality that the 1st and
2nd Gen units in every way, and they have ironed out most (if not all) of
the software issues. The 1st & 2nd Gen units were notoriously unreliable
and largely 'prototype', so beware of eBay sellers offering these old
units. Make sure you ask which Gen you are buying. Visually the 4th Gen (in
this video) looks pretty much the same as the older ones, but the button
text and backlights are much better and look way more OEM that the older
ones. The actual user interface is much quicker and smoother on the 4th gen
too. Apparently the 4th Gen has 2 processors unlike the previous models.
The Bluetooth works great over the phone and the Mic has been greatly
improved on the 4th Gen unit. I use the in-built Mic and it works way
better than I expected, calls are clear and perfect both ends, no shouting
needed. On the video I also show streaming music from my iPhone4 to the
Headunit via Bluetooth, which also works great (and I didn't even know it
did this when I bought it...Bonus!)
The Headunit is also fully compatible with the X5 steering wheel controls,
including the Phone buttons. It also comes with a remote that has all the
functions on it.
I have not routed the Digital TV antenna yet, it is sat in the glovebox so
of course I haven't shown this in the video, but when I briefly put it out
on the dash to test it, it found all the channels and seemed to work pretty
well. I'll upload a video of this when I have actually routed the Ariel
