2011 Honda IH Concept
A new Honda concept. -Info- At the 2011 LA Auto Show Design Challenge Honda will present the IH (Intelligent Horse) Concept, a futuristic all-terrain vehicle for a post-apocalyptic wild west-inspired world. For the 2011 Edition of the Los Angeles Design Challenge, designers at Honda Research and Development Center have imagined a dystopian scenario: a distant future hundreds of years from now, in a world disrupted by the impact of a gigantic comet. Technology has been wiped out, but scientists have been capable of using fragments of information to create an all-terrain vehicle to travel across the hot, dry and dangerous environments. The IH features a mix of futuristic technology and rétro-inspired elements. The wheels have been replaced by an array of horse hooves-inspired components that allow to move across all kind of terrains, while the body has an essential design, with no side doors and no glass windows. The open, single seater cockpit has no instrument panel, as the vehicle can be controlled using leather reins. This, in conjunction with the horse saddle-inspired leather seat, visually connects the IH Concept with the wild west world, used by designers as a visual inspiration for the project presentation, and makes the concept fit in the design challenge theme, which was to create a movie car for the Hollywood industry: in this case, the hypothetical feature film is a western titled "High Noon".

2011 TrakRok Concept
A new concept from TrakRok. -Info- The TrakRok Concept is a design study of an all-terrain trike vehicle with two front-wheels and a rear track system. The author is industrial designer Alexei Mikhailov. Taking inspiration by snowmobiles, the TrakRok is an unconventional ATV that can be used not only as an off-roader but also on snowy and muddy environments. Each one of the two wheels at the front is driven by an individual electric motor, while at the rear traction is provided by the independent track system with segmented rubber plates. At the core of the TrakRok is the chassis, composed of an exoskeleton in hard anodized aluminum. As Alexei Mikhailov explains, "The overall design mimics a shell-like rib cage with hollowed out pattern sections, resulting into a lightweight assembly construction." The powertrain uses hydrogen fuel cell technology, with the fuel cells positioned in the center belly of the vehicle, thus lowering the center of gravity. The fuel cell cluster is contained within a casing to protect from the outer environment, and is liquid cooled by two large radiator intakes at the front of the vehicle. The vehicle is targeted to leisure and sport activities, as well as a number of other professional fields, including military, farming and construction.

A screw-propelled vehicle is a land or amphibious vehicle designed to cope with difficult snow and ice or mud and swamp. Such vehicles are distinguished by being moved by the rotation of one or more auger-like cylinders fitted with a helical flange that engages with the medium through or over which the vehicle is moving. Modern vehicles called Amphirols and other similar vehicles have specialised uses. The weight of the vehicle is typically borne by one or more pairs of large flanged cylinders; sometimes a single flanged cylinder is used with additional stabilising skis. These cylinders each have a helical spiral flange like the thread of a screw. On each matched pair of cylinders, one will have its flange running clockwise and the other counter-clockwise. The flange engages with the surface on which the vehicle rests. Ideally this should be slightly soft material such as snow, sand or mud so that the flange can get a good purchase. An engine is used to counter-rotate the cylinders—one cylinder turns clockwise and the other counter-clockwise. The counter-rotations cancel out so that the vehicle moves forwards (or backwards) along the axis of rotation. The principle of the operation is the inverse of the screw conveyor. A screw conveyor uses a helical screw to move semi-solid materials horizontally or at a slight incline; in a screw propelled vehicle, the semi-solid substrate remains stationary and the machine itself moves. In abbreviations such as 4×4, the first figure is normally the total wheels (more precisely, axle ends, which may have multiple wheels), and the second, the number that are powered. Syntactically, 4×2 means a four-wheel vehicle that transmits engine power to only two axle-ends: the front two in front-wheel drive or the rear two in rear-wheel drive.[5] By this system, a six wheeled military transport truck would be a 6×6, while the typical American semi-truck tractor unit having two drive axles and a single unpowered steering axle would be a 6×4.
