2014 Chevy Corvette C7 Stingray Interview Video with Harlan Charles @ 2013 Detroit Auto Show
http://www.autobytel.com/auto-shows/united-states/detroit/ Road Test Editor Benjamin Hunting catches up with Harlan Charles, Corvette Product Manager, at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show for some excellent insights on the new C7 Stingray.
How did you balance the evolution of the design with what people come to expect to see in a Corvette?
"We really wanted to create an all new Corvette, every surface, everything people see was intended to be all new but also unmistakably Corvette. In the back of our minds we wanted to bring back the passion of the Stingray; some of the famous Corvettes like the 1959 Corvette racecar designed by Bill Mitchell, or the 1963 split-window. We wanted to bring back some of that passion but necessarily the same design cues. The goal was to create a new Corvette statement going forward that builds on the past but in an entirely new way. So one of the fine balances we did was incorporating a lot of racing technology which you can see in the car via the functional air vents and cooling outlets derived from the racecar while at the same time trying to make the car more sophisticated and upscale."
Are we going to see different variations of the Corvette that will allow you to take on higher end GT cars?
"Within the new Corvette Stingray line-up we have the Z-51 Performance Package to satisfy those who are looking for more track oriented performance, but then there will be different options at a higher luxury level that can be added on such as faux leather or suede headliner. We are going to have a lot of different ways that you can tailor the car to your needs whether it is more towards the performance end of the spectrum or the luxury GT end. What this will do is not only open the car up to the hard-core performance enthusiasts, but also to those who appreciate cars in general."
Will there be additional smaller displacement engines in the future?
"I will say the 2014 Chevy Corvette Stingray does have a large displacement 6.2 liter engine, but there is an Eco-Mode with cylinder deactivation which essentially makes the car under certain conditions a 3.1 liter 4-cylinder. With this technology we are allowing people to have the best of both worlds: a large V-8 with 450 ft.-lbs. of torque when you want it and you can also have the fuel economy of a 4-cylinder."
The Corvette gets faster with each new generation; will we ever hit a wall in terms of performance?
"We keep pushing the technology envelope. On the C6 Corvette, we never thought that the car would make over 630 horsepower in the ZR-1, but we did surpass that figure. And I think the performance will keep on going, people will always want more power and more speed. We are going to keep pushing the envelope as much as we can."

Return of the Stingray: The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette
DETROIT -- Chevrolet is redefining modern performance with today's debut of the all-new Corvette Stingray. And only a Corvette with the perfect balance of technology, design and performance can wear the iconic Stingray designation.
The 2014 Corvette Stingray is the most powerful standard model ever, with an estimated 450 horsepower (335 kW) and 450 lb.-ft. of torque (610 Nm). It is also the most capable standard model ever, able to accelerate from 0-60 in less than four seconds and achieve more than 1g in cornering grip. It is expected to be the most fuel-efficient Corvette, exceeding the EPA-estimated 26 mpg of the current model.
"Like the '63 Sting Ray, the best Corvettes embodied performance leadership, delivering cutting-edge technologies, breathtaking design and awe-inspiring driving experiences," said General Motors North America President Mark Reuss. "The all-new Corvette goes farther than ever, thanks to today's advancements in design, technology and engineering."
The all-new Corvette Stingray shares only two parts with the previous generation Corvette. It incorporates an all-new frame structure and chassis, a new powertrain and supporting technologies, as well as completely new exterior and interior designs. Highlights include:
An interior that includes real carbon fiber, aluminum and hand-wrapped leather materials, two new seat choices -- each featuring a lightweight magnesium frame for exceptional support -- and dual eight-inch configurable driver/infotainment screens
Advanced driver technologies, including a five-position Drive Mode Selector that tailors 12 vehicle attributes to the fit the driver's environment and a new seven-speed manual transmission with Active Rev Matching that anticipates gear selections and matches engine speed for perfect shifts every time
An all-new 6.2L LT1 V-8 engine combines advanced technologies, including direct injection, Active Fuel Management, continuously variable valve timing and an advanced combustion system that delivers more power while using less fuel
Lightweight materials, including a carbon fiber hood and removable roof panel; composite fenders, doors and rear quarter panels; carbon-nano composite underbody panels and a new aluminum frame help shift weight rearward for an optimal 50/50 weight balance that supports a world-class power-to-weight ratio
A sculptured exterior features advanced high-intensity discharge and light-emitting diode lighting and racing-proven aerodynamics that balance low drag for efficiency and performance elements for improved stability and track capability
Track-capable Z51 Performance Package including: an electronic limited-slip differential, dry-sump oiling system, integral brake, differential and transmission cooling, as well as a unique aero package that further improves high-speed stability.
"Stingray is one of the hallowed names in automotive history," said Ed Welburn, GM vice president of global design. "We knew we couldn't use the Stingray name unless the new car truly lived up to the legacy. The result is a new Corvette Stingray that breaks from tradition, while remaining instantly recognizable as a Corvette the world over."
The new Corvette Stingray will be built at GM's Bowling Green, Ky., assembly plant, which underwent a $131-million upgrade, including approximately $52 million for a new body shop to manufacture the aluminum frame in-house for the first time.
"We believe the Corvette represents the future of modern performance cars because it delivers more power, more driving excitement and better fuel efficiency," said Tadge Juechter, Corvette chief engineer. "The result is better performance by every measure. The 2014 Corvette delivers the fastest acceleration, the most cornering grip, the most track capability, the best braking performance and what we expect to be the best fuel economy ever for a standard Corvette."
The 2014 Corvette Stingray coupe goes on sale in the third quarter of 2013.

'Trailer'...2014 Corvette Stingray
First look at the 2014 Corvette Stingray being road tested on Apache Trail in Southern Arizona. This was the second time we saw them on this route this morning and both cars had Michigan tags. After they saw us recording them they never came back and we were unable to get another view...darn :(
I have also posted unedited clips of both cars.

We don't get to write about a new Corvette very often and the proof is in the math where it's taken 60 years to finally deliver up a seventh generation. The wait has always been worth it and this time looks like no exception. The most dramatic changes are with the styling where lines get sharpened and a new quarter window adjoining the door glass takes the greenhouse in a daring new direction. The rear is also emboldened with dramatic LED lights, new vents and quad Exhaust. In person the Corvette Stingray (that name returns to denote the base model) comes off as lithe and athletic but not overly refined or timeless. We do expect great things from the 450 hp LT1 V8, which finally features Direct Injection and should pay dividends in fuel economy, especially when paired with the new 7-speed manual transmission. Yes, seven speeds, just like the Porsche 911 only Chevrolet has engineered in a rev-matching system that should be a hoot. The C7 is 99 pounds lighter than the outgoing car and boasts a stiffer chassis thanks to hand-me-downs in the form of the aluminum frame from the ZO6 and ZR1. The interior is one area where we didn't want to see any sharing from the outgoing car and we're glad to report the new interior looks and feels leagues better. There are even two styles of seat for those who want even more aggressive bolstering. With as promising as the C7 looks we might not have to write about the next generation Corvette for a long time.
