Here is an idea about what you can do with your old Volvo v40 or s40 key. I have a 2001 v40 T4 and the key was breaking in peaces at the rubber plastic part. When I knew the price of a new one, I thought was expensive, so I tried to remove all the rubber and I found a hard plastic and I think it's still useful and a beautiful key. I solve the problem only about the key, not the remote controller. You can see at my pictures after done. Good luck.
