This is Volvo\'s version of Honda\'s VTEC except that Volvo only adjusts the timing of the exhaust valves with this solenoid in their turbo models. By altering the timing of the opening and closing of the exhaust valves, the PCM can adjust for engine load and speed. So this solenoid controls the flow of exhaust out of the combustion chamber as well as combustion temperatures more precisely. This allows for more efficient operation under all conditions.
