IMPORTANT NOTE: Please ready carefully: While this magnetic oil drain plug will fit nearly ALL Porsche models made since the 1990's I have heard from one 987 Turbo owner that from 2007-2008, the drain plug is an oversized M20x1.5, STANDARD non-turbo Porsches use this M18x1.5 plug. So, if you don't have a 987 2007-8 Turbo, you should be fine.

HAVING A MAGNETIC DRAIN PLUG TO CATCH IRON AND STEEL PARTICLES IS ONE OF THE BEST WAYS TO DETECT A FAILING (IMS) OR “IMMEDIATE SHAFT BEARING” IN SOME OF THESE Porsche model’s engines.

Three times as strong as the standard OEM 6061 machined aluminum plug with the small 8mm socket head that is easily stripped out.

I sourced the highest quality “forged steel” Japanese made plug with a much larger strip resisting 10mm hex socket with hardened “rolled” instead of die cut threads.

Hot “die forging” and rolling of the threads work hardens the entire plug to give both the threads and the hex socket exceptional strength.

Even annealed or non hardened steel has at least twice the strength, hardness and wear resistance of 6011 aluminum.

Soft 6061 aluminum is NOT the ideal material to use for the oil drain plug. Dissimilar materials allows easy “no galling” run down and tightening of the oil drain plug in the cast aluminum drain hole.

While aluminum will not rust, there is NO advantage to an aluminum plug, because the area of mating of the threads of the oil sump is ABOVE the sealing area of the aluminum “crush washer” gasket.

Basically, no corrosion will occur between the threads as they are continuously bathed in engine oil.

The zinc chromate outer plating is very rust resistant and meets DIN, SAE and JIS corrosion revisiting standards, and will last for years of removal, refitting, and in place under the car.

The center of the plug is not just drilled or bored. It is milled with a FLAT BOTTOM hole to accept the FLAT END of a 15 pound pull N50 high grade neodymium rare earth magnet. Green 640 high strength Loctite. 640 designed for manufacturers to secure cylinder sleeves into engine blocks is used to lock the magnet permanently into the drain plug.

After ALL of that preparation, the magnetic drain plugs are “oven baked” to make sure that the Loctite 640 fully cures.
