How to Install a Mass Airflow Sensor
The mass air flow sensor is designed to measure the amount of air entering the engine from the air filter. It sends the information to the car's engine control unit, which in turn determines the amount of fuel and spark that goes into the engine. A broken mass air flow sensor can possibly cause a wide range of various vehicle drivability problems such as stalling, especially when the engine is cold, misfiring, poor acceleration, etc. This article deals with the air flow sensor for a 2008 Scion xB, but the process is similar for other vehicles.

1.Open the hood and locate the mass air flow sensor. It should be located just to the left of the air box--where the air filter is located--on the air intake tube. There is a small harness plugging into it, and the wiring for the harness is clipped into the air box. Pull the wiring out of the clip.
2.Unclip the mass air flow sensor from the wiring harness. Using either a Phillips/Torx screwdriver or unscrew the screws and carefully remove the MAF.
3.Carefully place the replacement mass air flow sensor into the intake tube, orienting the MAF back in the same direction as the original one. Screw it in place and Plug the wiring harness back in place and then push the wiring into the clip on the air box.
