A catalytic converter will rarely fail without a problem or malfunction occurring somewhere in the emissions system upstream of the converter. It is important to determine the cause of the failure and repair it, in order to prevent a reoccurrence.
1. Carbon Deposits
This is an example of a converter with carbon deposits in theceramic catalyst. This is usually a result of oil or antifreeze entering the exhaust system or a too-rich fuel mixture. The heavy carbon deposit clogs the converter and restricts exhaust flow.
2. Catalyst Fracture
This is an example of a catalyst fracture. The ceramic becomes loose, then cracks and begins to break down. The pieces begin to obstruct flow, creating backpressure and increasing the heat in the exhaust system.
3. Overheated or Running Hot
A converter glowing red-hot or displaying evidence of heat discoloration, such as this one, is an indication of catalyst meltdown. This is a serious condition that should be addressed immediately, as it can cause additional damage to the engine.
4. Catalyst Meltdown
The catalyst pictured is the victim of meltdown, a condition occurring from extremely high temperatures. The ceramic melts and collapses, eliminating the honeycomb perforations and blocking exhaust flow, which can cause additional damage to the engine. A variety of malfunctions, including an incorrect fuel mixture, can create this condition. A careful check and repair of the vehicle’s systems will help prevent a reoccurrence.
5. OBDII Check Engine Light
All 1996 and later model passenger cars and light-duty trucks are equipped with a second generation On-Board Diagnostics computer (OBD II). This computer monitors the engine through various sensors to ensure the emission control components are functioning properly. In case of a malfunction of an emission component, a Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) will illuminate alerting the driver to possible problems.

We accept returns for any reason within 30 days of shipment of the item. Our returns policy is subject to the following conditions:
- You must contact us by email to obtain an RMA number before returning any item. Include your user ID, item number, email address, and phone number.
- Please tell us the reason for the return, and if you need a replacement or refund.
- The item must be returned unused in its original packaging with all and any accessories.
A return RMA number and return shipping info will be emailed to you. Please make sure your return shipment is trackable. Refunds will not be given until part(s) have been returned and checked in. All returns that are not the fault of Zig's Auto will be charged a 15% restocking fee.
