If you own a Diablo 6.0 or 2002/2003 Murcielago you are probably aware of the ignition coilpack dilemma. These cars were the first Lamborghinis to use coilpack ignitions after spark plug wires but before the use of Audi coil packs. Unfortunately, the Magneti Marelli coilpacks Lamborghini uses for these years are not without fault, they use small o-ring seals, which allow water to enter the spark plug valleys which leads to corrosion of the spark plugs and coilpacks. The corrosion causes a weak spark, RPM hunting, engine misfire and can damage the catalytic converters. To top it off, one set of stock coil packs is a scant $3,000.00 and chances are your local dealer doesn\'t have a complete set on hand. Unlike many other parts found on the Diablo and Murcielago, the coilpacks are not cross-referenced with any other car.
If your Diablo 6.0 or Murcielago is doing the following, it likely needs new coilpacks:Hunting RPMStalling while at idleCatalytic Converter overheat light coming onRaw fuel smell
Here\'s the low down on the Reid Performance (White Out) coilpack:1. 3 pin coilpack body to fit Lamborghini wiring harness;2. Spark plug boot to match the Magneti Marelli coilpack height and mount the coilpack; and3. Upper rubber seal to properly keep water out of the spark plug valley andmount the top of the coilpack to the Lamborghini head.
The stock Magneti Marelli coilpack:1. $3,000.00 for a set of 12;2. Allows water to leak into the spark plug valley;3. Prone to corrosion from allowing water to leak into the spark plug valley;4. Known to physically fall apart from corrosion;5. Requires heavy grease to help keep moisture out of spark plug valley, which causes a mess; and6. Not all dealers keep them on hand, which means you wait for the parts to ship from Italy.
Reid Performance vs. Magneti Marelli:1. RP has a larger ignitor than MM;2. RP utilizes a fitted, rigid rubber seal around the top spark plug valley and MM uses an o-ring inside the spark plug valley;3. RP spark plug boot is more rigid and fits tighter than MM boot;4. RP metal sleeve is coated to protect from corrosion, MM is not;5. RP coilpack body is exposed to prevent heat retention, whereas MM is covered with a trim piece (MM unit looks nicer from a side view);6. Mounting: RP uses the rigidity of the rubber seal and spark plug connection (similar to later Lamborghini 4 pin coilpacks), where MM utilizes a metal retaining clip; - Note: Every V12 Lamborghini before the Diablo 6.0 mounts the spark plug wires to the spark plugs without a retaining clip, like the RP coilpack - The chances of the WO coilpack coming loose is very unlikely (if you crash the car, chances are the coilpacks may be knocked loose) - After 5 years of production, there have been zero incidents of RP coilpacks coming loose7.In the pictures, the RP coilpack is black and the used MM coilpack is gold.I had some weak coilpacks in my personal Murcielago; the change in my car\'s driving characteristics were dramatic when I replaced the coilpacks. Results may vary, but here are the change I experienced with RP coilpacks:- Start up is constant in sound/RPM;- Car idle is constant and no RPM hunting, even with a/c on or nose lift up;- No low speed/low rpm hiccups;- Power delivery is very linear, not jumpy, throughout the power band;- The exhaust note is more clean;- Less popping from the exhaust while engine breaking and between shifts;- Less of a fuel smell while stopped and idling;- MPG has increased;- After taking my I took the car through an automated car wash, there was no water leaking past the rigid rubber seal into the spark plug valley. In contrast, when I took the car through an automated car wash with MM coilpacks, the spark plugs were submerged in water. I do not recommend driving a Murcielago or Diablo through an automated wash as the engine bay is not protected from the high pressure water.
Unfortunately, I cannot provide a warranty/guarantee of lifespan of the coilpacks.Pricing is for individual coil packs, a full set requires 12 coil packs.
