Jaguar omitted the very desirable ability to control the convertible top operation with the existing remote key fob. Thisaccessoryadds fun and convenience to the ownership experience of a convertible XK8 or XKR ('96-'06 X100 chassis). It also is handy for saving time as you approach the vehicle. It can help you to locate the vehicle in a busy parking lot, and save you time as you automatically close the top as you stow your boot cover and leave the vehicle.Once you have this great feature you will not know how you did without it! It will enable you to raise, lower, (and reverse and stop for safety) the convertible top, all with one or two simple button presses on your key fob. Operation is automatic and there is no need to hold the buttons. The windows are also controlled. The module comes complete with all accessories needed for installation and with well illustrated, easy to follow instructions. All wiring is color coded to match your vehicle, so you simply have to match the colors to the car wiring to install it. Connections are made with included Posi-taps(tm), which are reliable wire connectors that are extremely easy to use. The module also has six LED lights (which are hidden in the door along with the module after installation) that will give you positve confirmation that it is installed correctly.

FAQ

There is no convertible top button on my remote key fob. So how does this work?
The headlight button on the key fob, in conjunction with the door lock and unlock buttons is used for the convertible top functions. The headlight button functions are still usable too. (On a few cars the headlight button on the key fob has a picture of a horn instead of a headlight, but the function is the same.) For example, to drop the top with the door locked, you press the headlight button once, and the door unlock button once. Are there any safety considerations with the use of this product?
Yes, it is very important to understand that remote operation of the convertible top entails new safety responsibilities, since the top can now be operated without watching its operation. Please carefully review the safety instructions included with the product.
Please do not purchase or install this product if you do not intend to follow the safety instructions or do not understand them. Can I install this myself?
Only you can answer that, but here is a guideline: if you are handy enough to replace a home light switch, jack up a car and put on a spare tire, and assemble a piece of IKEA furniture all with reasonable confidence, then you are up to this job. If not, then you should consider finding someone with at least these skills to do it for you.I do not want to mess with my car...can I get someone professional to install this for me?
A competent (preferably Jaguar) mechanic can install this, as can some audio shops or custom shops. Always provide them with the instructions...do not expect them to know how to install this without the instructions.Do I need any special tools to install the remote top module?
You will need a standard phillips screwdriver, a small flatblade screwdriver and 7mm, 8mm, 10mm and 13mm wrenches and a Torx T27 driver. A small tack puller (available at any hardware store) will also be handy. You will also need a jack and lug wrench (the ones that come with the car will be fine). Will I need to cut any of the car's wires?
No wire cutting is necessary. What happens if I make a wiring error?
The use of matching color coding for the eight wires to connect will make a wiring error unlikely. If you do make one, the unit was carefully designed to neither be damaged nor damage the vehicle for the vast majority of wiring errors. In fact, if you damage the unit for any reason, return it and TheJagWrangler will replace it free within the one year warrany period. (Sorry, we cannot warrant your car against damage of any kind, though this is highly unlikely.)Tell me more about these Posi-tap connectors you provide?
Posi-taps are a patented wire splicing connector that requires no tools and no solder, yet are exceptionally reliable. Unlike T-taps and 'suitcase connectors' which are commonly available at the local auto-parts store, Posi-taps do not slice through the insulation weakening the factory wiring, and thereby leading to failure. Posi-taps just make a pinhole in the wire, so the wire retains its structural integrity. They are significantly more costly, but I would not use anything else on my vehicles. For more information, see [link removed by eBay].What else is included with the module?
All the materials you need. The module includes the color coded wiring harness to match your model year and left- or right-hand drive configuration. Ample zip-ties, Posi-taps and industrial stength self-adhesive Velcro (to mount the module inside the door panel) are also included. A length of double-faced tape is supplied to re-attach a small section of the door vapor barrier that is peeled back during installation.Does this module allow the top to operate when the car is in motion?
No, the remote top operation is disabled whenever the ignition is on.Can I use the remote to operate the top from inside the car?
Yes, with the ignition off, but we recommend that you use the console button to operate the top from inside the car.I saw a posting for how to 'drop the top' with some relays on Jaguarforums.com. Maybe that will save me a few dollars. Why should I buy this module instead?
--We offer a full set of features. Instead of just drop and stop in the online version, this module has drop, raise, reverse and stop.
--We offer a complete kit. You do not need to locate and purchase a bag of different parts.
--Much easier installation. You do not need to wire together a bunch of parts.
--No need to cut any factory wiring in your car.
--No soldering or crimping required.
--More foolproof installation with matching color coding, built-in LED lamps for testing and built-in protection from wiring errors.
--One year warranty.WIll this effect my automobile warranty?
Any aftermarket modification might effect your warranty if you still have one. Installation is at your own risk. The instructions say to disconnect the battery. What do I need to do when I reconnect the battery?
All you need to do is reset the power windows. To do this you simply lower both windows and hold the button until you hear a 'click', then raise the windows and hold the buton until you hear a 'click' again.
On some non-USA market cars, you may also need to re-enter the radio secutiy code which should be with your car manual, or can be obtained from a dealer if it is lost.If I ever need to return the unit for repair, do I need to disconnect all the wiring I installed?
No, the module is connectorized. You can simply unplug it and return it for repair in the unlikely event repair or replacement is needed. Will this unit drain my battery when the car is off for a few days?
No, the module is designed to have virtually zero standby power drain.I have a convertible a top pressure reduction kit installed. Is this module compatible?
Yes, it is compatible with both the electrical and hydraulic pressure reduction kits. As a plus, operating the top with the remote operates only under battery power, so the reduced voltage with the engine off helps extend the life of your system.

This product hasbeen discussed on Jaguarforums.com and other Jaguar forums. Here are some of the unsolicited comments:

"I installed my kit today. It works flawlessly. I had emailed whitexkr because on my car, one of the last two wires to connect was not on the connector he said in the instructions. It turns out I guess that on my car (2004 XK8), the wire needed was in a different location. Steve said he would update the instructions. It took me 2.5 hours to complete, and everything worked first time! Great job Steve, and the product looks to be very high quality! Thank you!""Had mine installed on Saturday. It's the coolest thing. Hit the remote in the house and the top is down when I get to my car. After taking off the boot cover I hit the remote and walk away from my car like James Bond or somebody as the top is closing. How cool is that?""I have one of WhiteXKR's modules in my '04, it's great! ""Last night was the public premiere of my new remote control convertible top! My wife and I went to see the "Cowboys and Aliens" movie. I was looking forward to hitting the buttons on the remote and having the top close behind me while I casually walked away without even looking back. We drove right past the line of people in front of the theater and everyone was gawking at my car. It was freshly washed and sparkling in the lights from the marquee. There was actually an end spot available, so I took that and got out of the car to remove the cover. My wife popped the clip on her side of the car so I didn't have to walk around, then I rolled it up and placed it in the trunk. As my wife came over to walk with me to the theater, I hit the buttons and started walking away. I could hear the windows moving, so I knew it was working without even looking back. Then my wife said "Aren't you going to put up the top?" I told her that it was going up, so she stopped to watch it. Everyone in the line was looking at us. I told her "It's going to close, don't worry about it, let's go!" but she wanted to stand there and make sure it closed all the way. It did, of course, but I didn't get to look like James Bond." "Mine arrived in the UK on Saturday and was fitted the same day.I could not be happier. I took it to a regional Jaguar Enthusiasts Club event today and I must have had to give details of the website to almost every XK8/R cabrio owner there. Plus I have posted it on the clubs XK8 bulletin board. So whiteXKR may have to increase production ....sorry Steve.... but its far too good a modification to keep a secret.""Thanks to Sam's video and Steve's RTC module with good instructions, I got this done today on my wife's XKR. I had one plastic holder on the small speaker break, and one on the door card. Neither has caused a problem, and both still fit snug. All told, it took me 4 hours to do. Now, it would take about 2 hours, maybe less.""I also installed this product this afternoon. It took about 3 hours. The instructions and product are first class. One of the best aftermarket products I have installed. Great Job WhiteXKR, we all owe you one."

"Have put a new mod on thecar on Saturday. A remote operated hood module. The one on “youtube”. First point this mod is easy, youtube makes it look hard. The longest bit is getting the door card off.
In the box you get the control module, a wiring harness and all the parts needed to complete it.
One of the best bits are the posi-locks that allow you to break in to the wiring loom without any soldering or crimping. They are the dog’s b****ks
Will give you a lots of info. Steve’s a helpful guy and knows his stuff. As you may know I also have the auto rear window mod and it work with this also. There’s good build instructions and a comprehensive operational test, and safety tests to ensure the unit is working.
In short the operation is by pushing the head light and then the lock or unlock buttons in quick succession on the remote. With the ability to stop/reverse the operation at ay moment.
I am well chuffed with the mod and used it a few times already in the two days."

"I have also just installed the remote fob hood module ([link removed by eBay])
It took me just under 4 hours to install but that was partly due to copious amounts of tea & neighbours popping out for a nosey chat!
The instructions were excellent & comprehensive. The only real problem I had was getting the fuse box unlocked. However after a quick look at the YouTube video, problem solved!
Everything you need arrives in the box down to the excellent posi-locks, small cable ties, velcro & the module itself which is rather impressive especially when you come to test it all & various check lights light up.
It all worked correctly straight away, my only concern was whether the double lock still works but after pressing the head light button followed by 2 presses of the lock button, I had the the 'beep' followed by the roof closing. Very impressive!
All in all I think this an excellent modification, pretty easy to install thanks to very good instructions backed up by a YouTube clip "

"Evening, All. In my opinion, Jaguar made two mistakes with the otherwiseextremely lovely X100 [XK8 / XKR]convertibles:
1. The standard exhaust is too quietand robs the driver of the excitement of hearing his/her beautiful V8, and
2. They missed off the button to remotely raise or lower the hood from the standardremote.
Now, I solved fault number one on my car some 7 months ago by judicious application of a lovely stainless steel sports exhaust system fromQuicksilver (other sports exhausts are available). She now sounds like a proper
rip-snorting GT. Beautiful. Today I plugged the final, glaring hole in my P&J's feature list by installing the remote hood kit supplied by The Jag Wrangler ([link removed by eBay]) and, after only three hours of fiddling around in the drivers door, wheel well and enginebay, I was done. Two key presses (headlights followed immediately by unlock) andthecar not only unlocks, she drops her top and windows alluringly as if I wasalready standing alongside her with the key twisted in the lock, looking bored. By the time I close the front door of my house, walk to the car and open thedoor, we're good to go for some wind-in-the-hair fun. Similarly, on my returnfrom a blast through the country lanes looking suitably windswept and interesting, I merely exit the car, press headlamp-lock on the remote and stroll away to the house with nary a backward glance, safe in the knowledge that the P&J is taking care of all that locking-and-hood-raising malarkey.
Priceless.
If you're wondering whether this mod is worth doing; it is. Massively. If you're wondering if it's a DIY fitment; it is. So long as you'rereasonably practical, the instructions are clear and concise and you shouldn'tgo far wrong."
