X-Ring Seals - Viton Fluoroelastomer
Description
This is a set ofx-ring seals. One to seal the base of theDistributorat the aft or transmission end of the exhaust camshaft, and a second to sealthe block off plug at the aft or transmission end of the intake camshaft. Set includes two x-rings made of Viton Fluoroelastomer.
This is the most common point ofoil leak, which runs down the end of the cylinder head, puddling on the transmission bellhousing. The oil will pick up dirt and road grit, making a filthy mess. The leak is usually unnoticed because it is covered by water pipes and hoses, vacuum hoses, and sections of wiring harness. Left to leak, oil will begin running down the front and back of the transmission bellhousing and engine block, dripping on the ground. And this leak leaves a particular mess for anyone attempting to work on the engine.
The original o-rings are round shaped Buna made of Butadiene rubber.Buna rubber israted to250 degreesFahrenheit. The enginecylinder headthat they are installed into regularly exceeds that temperature rating. The o-ringsdo not hold their round shape for very long at these high temperatures when used in the square groove of the distributor, cam angle sensor, and block off plug. Within six months, the round o-ring becomes square or rectangularin shape and begins to leak, then turns hard and brittle, soon cracks, and within a short time, oil is running down the side of the cylinder head in a steady stream.
Viton Fluoroelastomer is ratedto 400+ degrees Fahrenheit, providing a significant improvement in temperature resistance and significantly increasing the life of the ring. Viton is a fluoropolymer elastomer, made by Dupont Corporation, and should be recognizable to gear heads because it is also used to coat the top and bottom embossed layers of multi layer steel (MLS) cylinder head gaskets made by Cometic and other high quality high performance gasket manufacturers. When compared to Buna, the Viton material providesmuch betterresistance to oils,hydrocarbons, ozone, gasoline, and the various substances and chemicals that are common to the engine compartment of an automobile.
Taking this one step further, the shape of these rings has been optimizedto match the groove they are to be installed into, and to providesuperior sealing over a regular, round o-ring. The cross section of these rings is a \"X\", hence the name \"x-rings\". This shape provides two outer sealing surfaces, and two inner sealing surfaces, twice as many as a round o-ring. In addition to this, the shape of the x-ring matches the square groove it is being installed into, reducing deformation and maintaining the a seallonger. Let\'s face it, it never made much sense to cram a round o-ring into a square groove, bake it, and turn it into a rectangular, hard, brittle, leaking mess.
Viton Fluoroelastomerrings are quite a bit more expensive than Buna o-rings, and x-rings are typicallytwice as expensive as o-rings, or more. But we made a bulk quantity purchase of these x-rings, making it possible to offer them for a fraction of what they usually cost.
