Know about the MASS AIR FLOW (MAF) SENSOR:

What does a MAF Sensor do?

The Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor measures the amount of air flow entering the intake manifold using a heated grid or wire. The PCM uses this signal primarily for fuel control.

Where are these sensors located?

The Mass Air Flow sensor is located in the intake ducting after the air filter.

Will a malfunctioning MAF Sensor illuminate the check engine light or affect vehicle operation?

Yes, a failing sensor can illuminate the MIL, and may cause the engine to run rich or lean; the engine may lack power and produce “pinging” noises during part throttle driving.

What are the common causes of failure?

Typically these sensors fail due to exposure to the under hood heat from engine operation or if debris collects on the sensor element.

How to determine if these sensors are malfunctioning.

DTC codes P0171/P0174 may be set due to lean fuel mixtures and P0172/P0175 may be set due to rich fuel mixtures. DTCs P0101 through P0103 may also be set in the computer memory. A scan tool can be used to monitor the MAF data parameter during engine operation.

DIY Information for Geek Guys:

REMOVING THE ORIGINAL MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR (MAF)

1. Disconnect the ground cable from the battery. This prevents accidental starting and possible injury during MAF sensor installation. This also disables electric cooling fans that may come on even after the ignition has been turned off and the key removed.

NOTE: Disconnecting the battery ground cable erases pre-programmed electronic memories. Write down radio stations and other memory settings before disconnecting the ground cable. Re-program these settings after the ground cable has been reconnected.

2. Locate the vehicle’s MAF sensor. Note how the harness connector lead plugs into the sensor. This is important for correctly installing the replacement sensor.

3. CAREFULLY separate the harness connector lead from the MAF sensor.

4. Loosen the clamps securing the MAF sensor to the throttle body air cleaner ducts. If the clamps are reusable, save them for installation on the replacement sensor. Remove brackets or other mounting hardware, if necessary.

NOTE: If the MAF sensor is mounted on the throttle body, remove and save the mounting screws for replacement sensor installation.

5. Separate the MAF sensor from the air duct(s) or throttle body and remove it from the vehicle. Save MAF sensor-to-air-duct seal(s), if so equipped, for installation on the replacement unit.

6. Put the old MAF sensor into the carton to assure core credit upon return. (If required)

INSTALLING THE REPLACEMENT MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR

1. Position MAF sensor in the vehicle. Make sure the airflow direction indicated on the sensor is toward the engine.

2. Install sensor-to-air-duct seal(s), if so equipped, on the replacement MAF sensor.

3. Connect the MAF sensor to the throttle body air cleaner ducts. If the sensor mounts directly on the throttle body, install and tighten the mounting screws to 10 ft-lb. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN!

4. Position clamps over the air duct/MAF sensor connections and tighten. Replace the clamps if necessary.

NOTE: For the MAF sensor to work properly, the sensor/air duct connections must be airtight.

5. CAREFULLY plug the harness connector lead into the MAF sensor.
