What is PVD chrome/black chrome?
PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) Chrome is a three 3 step process.First a primer is applied and cured. Next the wheel enters a PVD vacuum chamberwhere a mixture of metals are applied onto the wheel creating a chrome finish.Finally a high quality acrylic clear powder coat is applied to protect thechrome finish.
PVD Chrome is a highly durable process which unlike traditionalchrome is much more resistant to salts and chemicals applied to roads to meltsnow and ice during winter driving.
PVD CHROME: PVD coating is a vacuum deposition processthat has received increasing use in recent years and is no longer seen as alaboratory process. It has been scaled up to handle large complex partgeometries at an affordable cost. Many companies have realized benefits fromconverting their product from electroplating to PVD coating. Coatings can bedeposited from room temperature to as high as 500 degrees Celsius depending onthe substrate and the application. The PVD process provides a more uniformdeposit, improved adhesion up to six times greater in some cases, wider choiceof materials to be deposited and there are no harmful chemicals to dispose of.Due to the nature of the processing, some inclusions (air bubbles and/or fisheyes) may appear on each wheel in the clear coat. These inclusions are normal.Inclusions are not considered to be a defect and do not affect the longevity ofthe chrome finish. Because PVD coating is more environmentally friendly andchemical disposal costs are minimal, the cost of PVD coating and electroplatingis very close on some products
Painted wheels are finished using a 4 stage process which exceeds all domestic and international OEM standards.
Chrome wheels are first polished prior to plating. Copper is applied and hand buffed to eliminate small imperfections. Next is a nickel alloy layer that provides a hard and durable surface for the chrome to adhere. Finally a chrome alloy is applied which protects the nickel and gives the wheel a mirror like finish. Our plating process meets or exceeds all OEM standards. Sample wheels from each batch are routinely subjected to rigorous testing (i.e. salt spray) to assure the finish will be durable and look good for years to come.
