TWO48 Inch Diameter Gear Blanks. ONE of Two HALVES in a 'Herring Bone' Gear, to Replace the worn-out Gear mounted on the shaft, sitting on the Pallet, out in the Yard. This Shaft was a Repair Job for Dutra of Stockton, California. A fix for one of their Barge Dredger Cranes,in the 'Delta'. The old Gear and Shaft was Chucked-Up in the Lathe, between centersand IMachinedJust the Gear,Off, leaving the 'Spokes', to mount the New Gears on. The 2 New Gears Started as Raw Mill Blanks (see Pic) andI Machined Them Equal and True to the 0.001", That's Overa Distance of 4 Feet!Leaving the I.D. .015" Smaller, than the Spoke Diameter. For Mounting, after the Teeth are Cut,Each Half-Gear is Heated-Up using Two Rosebud Acetylene Torches, to Expand it Larger than the Spoke Diameter....the Gear is then dropped down, by Forklift,onto the vertically held Shaft, to rest upon Precisely Placed'Stops'. This isa 'Heat Shrink Fit'. After 'Air'Cooling, the Shaft isInverted and the Second Gear is Heated and Dropped Down Upon the First, AND Beforeit is Allowed to Cool, it Must be PRECISELY Aligned by Using a 'Ball/Sphere' Gauge at the 4 Corners of Opposing Teeth. The Gear is Finely Rotated into Perfect Alignment as the Proper Size Sphere Contacts All 4Sharp Corners of Teeth, Equally and with Precision!After Cooling,Our Master Weldor,Gabe, takes Over. After Grinding 'Weld-Prep',He firstspot welds All,to keepHer True, and then completes thejob in a Pattern to avoid Warping. Job Done!!
