HOW IT WORKS: CATALYTIC CONVERTERS?

The catalytic converterwas first introduced in 1975 in order to help meet clean-air laws. The basicfunction of the catalytic converter is to take pollutants within the exhaustsystem and convert them into less harmful gas emissions before they leave theengine.The converter most oftenlooks like a honeycomb with many passageways through it. It can also be manysmall ceramic beads with a catalyst coating. Chemical reactions take place toreduce the emissions.

EMISSIONS

There are three mainemissions produced by a car engine. They include nitrogen gas, carbon dioxideand water vapour.

While it is thought carbondioxide does play a factor in global warming, there are three other emissionsproduced by car engines. Although they are in smaller amounts, they are muchmore harmful. They include: carbon monoxide, a colorless, odorless, poisonousgas; hydrocarbons or volatile organic compounds, which produced smog because ofevaporated, unburned fuel; and nitrogen oxides, which produced smog and acidrain in addition to being harmful to the human mucus membranes.

REDUCING POLLUTION

Catalytic convertersbasically reduce pollution by causing a reaction inside. The emissions comeinto contact with a metal catalyst - platinum, rhodium, palladium, or even goldin new converters. Most vehicles have what is called a three-way catalyticconverter, as there are three emissions that it reduces.

Two different reactionsoccur inside the catalytic converter.

The first is the reductioncatalyst. When nitrogen oxide molecules come into contact with platinum andrhodium, the metal takes the nitrogen atom out of the molecule, leaving theoxygen alone. The nitrogen then bonds together so that instead of havingnitrogen oxides, there is oxygen and nitrogen.

Then comes the oxidation catalyst.Hydrogens and carbon monoxides are burned over platinum and palladium.Remaining oxygen then bonds to create carbon dioxide instead of hydrocarbons.

CONTROLLING POLLUTION

The third stage is thecontrol system, which references the exhaust stream in order to control thefuel injection system. Near the top of the catalytic converter is an oxygensensor. It determines how much oxygen is in the exhaust, and relays theinformation to the engine computer, which then either increases or decreasesthe amount of oxygen according to what is needed. This ensures that that thereis enough oxygen for the oxidation catalyst.

A FAILING CATALYTIC CONVERTER

Catalytic converters fail if theybecome clogged or poisoned. A mechanic can determine if it is plugged in a coupleof different ways. One way is to remove it and check if there is a change inengine performance. The second way is to temporarily remove the oxygen sensorand check if there is a change in engine performance.

You can usually tell a cloggedconverter by a vehicle that won't accelerate properly or if there is a drop ingas mileage.

A catalytic converter can also failif there are bad exhaust valves on the engine or plugs that cause fuel tooverheat the converter.
