SYMTOMS OF GEAR FAILURE:1. The headlight motor runs but does not open the headlight.2. The headlight only opens partially or droops after it has opened.3. The headlight opens and closes but the motor continues to run with a loud grinding noise. Most headlight motors fail because of the plastic gears that GM put in these motors. The electrical part of the motor usually does not fail. I have also seen many gear failures with the cheap undersized aftermarket plastic gears sold by others (see pictures). If your headlight won\'t stay in the closed position, then see below regarding a GM technical service bulletin.
HARD ANODIZED ALUMINUM IS THE BEST CHOICE! Here\'s why:1. This heavy-duty CNC machined aluminum gear will never break or sheer teeth like the original plastic gears, and even lower quality aftermarket plastic gears being sold, and will not bind up your motor like the low-quality brass and aluminum gears sold by others.2. Unlike brass, thisaluminum gear weighs only one ounce which is very close to the weight of the original plastic gear and the OE design specifications for the headlight motor actuator.3. This premium quality aluminum gear comes with a lifetime warranty! If it ever fails and strips teeth you can send it back for a free replacement.
If you have a 2000 Corvette read this paragraph:Some very early production 2000 model year Corvettes were built with the 1997-1999 style headlight and motor assemblies. The motors in these assemblies are different and do not interchange even though they use the same gears inside. See the pictures above to compare. The 2000-2004 style motors have a plastic gear case and a rubber boot over the top of the motor.
If you need the repair kit for the 1997-1999 and early 2000 Corvette or other hard to find headlight related parts, then please see my visit my eBay store at the following link and select the category for Corvette. carguy8t8 | eBay Stores
IMPORTANT! Be sure to check your bump stop insulators on the base of your headlight as shown in the pictures. They are often worn, broken, or missing. Missing bump stops can cause the headlight linkages to skip past the stops which causes all kinds of issues including the headlight opening up partially before shutting off. I have bump stops available in my eBay store at the link below.Add the desired quantity to your cart along with the gear kit for combined shipping. If you add multiple items to your cart and the shipping seems high, you can click \"request a total from seller\" and I will make adjustments to actual shipping costs.carguy8t8 | eBay Stores
For Corvette owners we also have a kit available to address a General Motors technical service bulletin (TSB) on the C5 Corvette. This kit addresses an issue where the headlight closes then opens back up partially before shutting off the motor (even if the bump stop insulator is still there). You can find this C5 TSB repair kit inthe eBay store at the following link under the category for Corvette.carguy8t8 | eBay Stores

SHAMELESS RANT: This cost saving repair kit was designed and engineered by an American small business entrepreneur and was so successful that big Chinese business took notice and decided to copy it. These businesses are now shipping from the USA but are actually just Chinese businesses funneling cheap, low quality auto parts direct from China to the American consumers. If you read their descriptions, you will quickly discover they have very little understanding of what they are selling. Many of these listings show aluminum gears in the pictures but say \"brass gear\" in the title and description. Their feedback hasmany complaints about low quality, poor customer service, and slow shipping. They cannot answer questions because they have no actual knowledge of the product and no idea how to rebuild a headlight motor. This means no instructions, and no idea of the quality standards required when manufacturing these kits. Through my rebuild service, I have received motors from customers who installed these Chinese gears and had issues. I have had to toss many into the trash due to improper machining which causes excessive noise and binding issues which causes the motor and headlight to get stuck in the open and closed positions. Now that\'s going to be annoying when you have to open the hood to raise or lower the headlights!! We have been selling our premium quality kits here on eBay since 2010 with thousands of happy customers and always maintain a near 100% positive feedback rating due to high customer satisfaction and excellent customer service you can only get from an American small business. Buying kits withcarguy8t8as the seller ensures that you will receivethe original premium-quality repair kit from a knowledgeable classic car enthusiast and American owned and operated small business. After all,who would want to put cheap, low-quality Chinese auto parts in their American made classic car??Please be aware:Several customers have had issues because they watched DIY YouTube videos with people likely doing this job for the first time and pretending to be experts. Every one of these DIY videos I have watched has misinformation that can cause issues. From a guy using an impact driver to tighten the tiny little bolts on the gear case that often seize and break (C4 motors), to a guy who puts the thrust washers on the outside of the case to another guy who puts the snap in T-brace bearing inside the gear case with the gear (C5 kit)! What a disaster!!These videos may be helpful to give an overall sense of how to do the job, but you will save yourself some headaches if you purchase this kit and follow the detailed instructions that are included. You definitely don\'t want to have to take it all apart a second time especially if you are paying a shop $125 per hour!
Thank you for your business!
