I did a little research on this decal.....there\'s lots more but if you\'ve got time here\'s some interesting history.
First, here\'s an exerpt from the jalopyjournal about Doug:
Actually here is the real scoop. The original company that Doug Thorley started was a muffler shop back in 1958 in East LA. In the early 60\'s Doug started to make headers and \"Headers by Doug\" stickers started showing up on winning drag cars. Doug and wife Betty sold the company and got divorced and new owner Micky called it Doug Thorley Headers. A number of years went by and Micky got sick and asked for help. Betty came back in to run things and Micky got worse. He ended up selling the company back to Betty, Doug and a third partner. Doug mainly did R&D and was an investor. Eventually He and Betty had another falling out and she agreed to buy him out. Doug kind of stayed away at this time, occasionally coming around to help out with a little R&D and collect his payments. Betty then got sick and at this time Doug started doing custom headers again under the Doug\'s Headers name. During this time Doug Thorley Headers was mainly making truck and motor home headers, not muscle car or performance parts. Betty passed and Doug started making production headers again for the classic and muscle car markets. After about another year, the surviving partner sold Doug Thorley Headers to Summit Industries (not the mail order guys) in Corona, Ca who previously had bought out Jerry Jardine of Jardine Headers.PerTronix, who had previously acquired Ermie Immerso Ind and Thunderbird Headers bought Doug\'s Headers and Doug worked to help keep the Doug\'s Headers line a top quality product. PerTronix sells and manufactures them as a premium line to compliment their Patriot Header line. They are currently made in Rancho Dominguez (think north Long Beach) CA.Doug was also famous for his drag cars - The Chevy II Much that is in the NHRA museum, the Funny Car Corviar that Joe Piasano ended up with, and the pair of rear/mid engined Javelin\'s.HOTRODDON, MAY 14, 2008

AND, from dragracecentral here\'s more interesting racing history talk:
At this time of year I often get asked the same question, and that is \"What was your first Indy?\" The answer is 1967 and I remember it like it was yesterday. Two friends of mine, Mike O\'Donnell and Ray Szafranski, decided just before the weekend that we wanted to go the Indy. It was Friday afternoon and we packed up and piled into Mike\'s Dodge Dart and headed west, and about twelve hours later we were so excited as we waited for the first pair of cars to fire up atIndianapolis Raceway Park. Now I\'m not talking about fuel cars, I\'m talking about Stockers. Yep, we were just waiting to hear engines, any engines so that we could experience all that was special about the \"Big Go.\" Three days later we were sitting in the grandstands as \"Big Daddy\" Don Garlits got ready to square off with James Warren in the Top Fuel final, which, as fate would have it, would eventually be ranked as one of the greatest moments in Indy history. I remember sitting there thinking that James, as good as he had been running and as great as his team was, didn\'t have a chance against Garlits. I knew, and I think everyone else did too, that \"Big Daddy\" would break into the six-second range, win the race and then shave his beard just as he predicted. What I didn\'t know was how special that moment would be, and every time I see a picture of Don, surrounded by legions of fans as he lathered up, I look to see if I can find myself in the crowd. To this day, forty-five years later, I still haven\'t seen a picture with me in it, but thankfully I have the memories of one of the greatest moments in drag racing history.
Jack Chrisman at Indy in 1967.That \'67 Nationals was a special race for a lot of reasons, not the least of which was the dragster final. It was the first year that Funny Cars ran as their own class at Indy and it was supposed to be the year of the Fords, or at least the Ford-powered cars. Jack Chrisman, driving his flip-top Mercury Comet, stunned everyone with his 7.604 in qualifying, a time that was a staggering .56 seconds ahead of the number two driver, Doug Thorley and his Chevrolet Corvair. Did you know that that performance still remains as the biggest gap between the number one and two qualifiers in drag racing history? The closest to it would be the 1974 Sanair Grandnationals when Gary Beck qualified number one with a 5.913 and Dave Settles was second with a 6.274.....Since only twelve Funny Cars showed up for the \'67 Indy race,
Doug Thorleyby round two we were down to six cars, three Fords and three Chevrolets, and in one of the greatest rounds of racing ever (and I\'m not exaggerating), the three underdog Chevrolet drivers had upset all three of the Fords. Joe Lunati started out by stunning Chrisman,Terry Hedrick, in the Seaton\'s Shaker car, beat\"Fast\" Eddie Schartman and Thorley stoppedMaynard Rupp in the Rupp & Steffey Mercury Cougar. At the end of the round the Chevy fans were going wild while the Ford faithful sat in stunned silence. In the end it was Thorley and his Corvair facing Joe Lunati, and just 7.83 seconds later Doug had the first Indy Funny Car trophy and I had some great memories of a wonderful weekend. The magazines, like National DRAGSTERand Drag News had a field day with the ads after Indy and Doug was prominent in a lot of them. It was, and still is one of the greatest upsets in drag racing history. Did you know that turned out to be Doug\'s only national event win?
Just got an email from a fellow saying the decal\'s picture is a Vega. Checked this out and Doug did race a Vega. From Google: (link: is 70sfunnycars.com/previous2.html) and a nice picture...This sharp Vega was the last in the line of Doug’s Headers funny cars. Dick Bourgeois had recently switched from the Chevy to the late model Hemi. This car had the paint molded into the body, like boats. Built by Romeo Palamides, the Vega was a feature car on the Coca-Cola Cavalcade of Stars match race circuit. The car was later sold to Murf McKinney. (Drag Racing Memories Photo; info from draglist)Look great on the side or rear window of your vintage or collectible car, rod, lowrider, truck or trailer (Boler or Winnebego or Airstream or?)........ These decals would look great on: 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970 ford, chevrolet, dodge, chrysler, plymouth, edsel?, oldsmobile, buick, pontiac, vw, MG, jaguar, rover, healy, sprite, austin, citroen, fiat, mercury, monarch, opel, porsche, studebaker, volkswagen, or on racers / racing cars / Nascar / Cart / Indy or ?
