Determine engine size before selecting the converter. Converters are listed according to legal engine size.
If engine has been changed and is not the same model year as the chassis, proceed as follows:
1. If the engine is older than the chassis, select the converter according to the chassis model year.
2. If the engine is newer than the chassis, select the converter according to the engine requirement.
3. Inform the owner that improper engine switching is not legal. The customer and the shop that switched the engine could be fined $2,500.00.
Converter Type
Determine the type of converter being replaced. Check whether the converter is a 2-Way, 3-Way, or 3-Way + Air.
Vehicle Weight (Test Weight)
Determine the weight limit before selecting the converter. Converter coverage is listed according to Test Weight.
How To Calculate Vehicle Test Weight:
For passenger cars and light duty trucks less than 6000 lbs. GVW
Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) Less Vehicle Capacity Plus 300 Lbs. = Vehicle Test Weight.
For trucks over 6000 pounds GVW
(Gross Vehicle Weight + Curb Weight) x 1/2 = Vehicle Test Weight

How To Identify California Emissions
When trying to identify a California emissions vehicle simply refer to the engine
information sticker located on the underside of the hood, on the upper radiator support, or
on the firewall in the engine compartment.
1. Represents the engine family number also referred to as the engine test group.
This is needed for proper catalytic converter application, the catalog supplies the
engine test groups with every application.
2. Represents what to look for when trying to determine weather a vehicle is
California compliant.
3. Represents the certification level of the vehicle, the converter certification must
match the vehicle certification. The certification level for each application is
listed in the catalog.

Converter Warranty Return
A catalytic converter will rarely fail without a problem or malfunction occurring somewhere in the emissions system upstream of the converter. It is important to determine the cause of the failure and repair it, in order to prevent a reoccurrence.
1. Carbon Deposits
This is an example of a converter with carbon deposits in theceramic catalyst. This is usually a result of oil or antifreeze entering the exhaust system or a too-rich fuel mixture. The heavy carbon deposit clogs the converter and restricts exhaust flow.
2. Catalyst Fracture
This is an example of a catalyst fracture. The ceramic becomes loose, then cracks and begins to break down. The pieces begin to obstruct flow, creating backpressure and increasing the heat in the exhaust system.
3. Overheated or Running Hot
A converter glowing red-hot or displaying evidence of heat discoloration, such as this one, is an indication of catalyst meltdown. This is a serious condition that should be addressed immediately, as it can cause additional damage to the engine.
4. Catalyst Meltdown
The catalyst pictured is the victim of meltdown, a condition occurring from extremely high temperatures. The ceramic melts and collapses, eliminating the honeycomb perforations and blocking exhaust flow, which can cause additional damage to the engine. A variety of malfunctions, including an incorrect fuel mixture, can create this condition. A careful check and repair of the vehicle’s systems will help prevent a reoccurrence.
5. OBDII Check Engine Light
All 1996 and later model passenger cars and light-duty trucks are equipped with a second generation On-Board Diagnostics computer (OBD II). This computer monitors the engine through various sensors to ensure the emission control components are functioning properly. In case of a malfunction of an emission component, a Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) will illuminate alerting the driver to possible problems.
Magnaflow's Warranty Policy
The manufacturer warrants that this catalytic converter is free from defects in materials and workmanship. This catalytic converter has been designed and manufactured to meet the Emission Performance requirements specified by the Federal EPA and the California Air Resource Board (CARB). When the vehicle is properly maintained, the catalytic converter is warranted to meet such requirements from the date of installation for a mileage duration which will vary from state to state; please check your specific warranty card for exact details. The manufacturer further warrants the catalytic converter’s external shell and end-pipes (those being attached during the original manufacturing process and otherwise unaltered during installation) against defects in materials and workmanship for 5 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first, from date of installation.
The manufacturer’s warranty is void and no liability can be assumed:
- If the catalytic converter is not properly installed on the vehicle for which it is designed and cataloged.
- If the catalytic converter has been altered or repaired, or if it has been damaged by negligence, accident or mishandling.
- If the catalytic converter failure is related to the engine not operating within original equipment specifications, to a vehicle withan illegaladd-on device or modified part, or to use of specialty fuels, lubricants, sealants or additives.
The manufacturer reserves the right to determine what constitutes the vehicle’s proper operating condition. No other warranty, expressed or implied, including merchantability, applies to the catalytic converter, nor is any person or company authorized to assume any other warranty. The manufacturer does not assume any responsibility for any consequential damages occasioned by the catalytic converter, or inconvenience or interruption in any operation. This warranty gives you specific legal rights. You may also have other rights that vary from state to state.
