Turbocharged Minivan Edges GT-R and Viper in the 1/4-Mile

June 2nd, 2015

Eagle SummitWhat would you do with a broken or abandoned all-wheel drive 1993 Eagle Summit minivan? How about doing what one New Englander did – throwing in a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4G63 four-cylinder engine and heading for the drag strip. After that, see if you can get paired up with a couple of iconic performance machines, like the Nissan GT-R and the Dodge Viper. That’s right Godzilla and the legendary Snake.

While the Eagle Summit minivan (manufactured by Mitsubishi) is not known for performance prowess (neither is any other minivan, for that matter), it is moderately light and the four-wheel drivetrain hooks up well. Add a turbocharged and intercooled 4G63 DOHC engine (from a Mitsubishi Eclipse, Eagle Talon, or Plymouth Laser), upgrade to a Mitsubishi 20G turbocharger (and intercooler), and insert some performance tuning software and – eureka – you are making 450-horsepower. A set of Volk Racing wheels and Toyo Proxy R1R tires help all of those ponies stick to the pavement. Check out the video for yourself, this thing wins with traction (the Viper spins out in the first race and misses third gear in the rematch) and power, posting a 12.34 @ 116 mph in the 1/4-mile.
